Erin Green | 158 comments Hi I'm Bernadette from the UK. I've always been an avid reader from a very young age.

In recent years I've strayed away from the classics but now feel the urge to return.

I love the fact there are several book choices each month and hope to add to interesting discussions and posts.

Hi Bernadette! Welcome! Isn't it amazing how the urge to read classics just sneaks up on you? That happens to me every summer! I'm sure you'll find many good choices and discussions here. Happy reading and enjoy!

Ruthanne Johnston Hi everyone!
I'm Ruthanne, a retire nurse, living in Texas. I love reading the Classics and have just finished three Thomas Hardy books and plan to read all of them. I am trying to keep up with current books at the same time. It's a challenge, but I love a challenge!
Looking forward to learning what everyone else is reading on this site!

message 1506: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Hi Ruthanne, I'm glad you've joined us. I'm about to start my first Hardy in the next few days (Far from the Madding Crowd) so hopefully I'll want to read more of his books afterwards. Anyway, welcome to the group and I hope you enjoy reading and discussing classics with us :)

message 1507: by Ruthanne (new)

Ruthanne Johnston Thank you, Pink! I'm so glad to have found this group and hope you enjoy FFTMC! It is so superior to the latest movie version but that's usually the case.

message 1508: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Yes that's usually the case, but I quite like watching the film or tv version after reading the book, especially with classics, so I'll probably take a look once I'm finished.

message 1509: by Ruthanne (new)

Ruthanne Johnston Check out the 1981 version with Peter O'Toole...far superior. Isn't it kind of fun to criticize the movie if you've read the book?

Hello! My name's Kenny and I come from a land called Texas, where during the summer you feel like a baked chicken in an oven. I've been steadily making my way through the classics that I should had read during school, never got a chance to explore, or plainly just didn't bother! Looking at my bookcase for any unread classics: Moby-Dick, Bleak House, The Count of Monte Cristo, Vanity Fair, Middlemarch, A Farewell To Arms. I suppose I will put those at the top of my checklist! I'm looking forward to meeting y'all!

Nathan | 1 comments Hi everyone. My name is Nathan, I currently live in Illinois, and because of the boredom I feel living there, I have always liked the prospect of travel. I read a lot (duh) including fantasy, science fiction, horror, drama, mystery ect. I also read non-fiction and have been getting into philosophy. My favorite book is Catcher in the Rye. I'm joining here to expand my small repertoire of books primarily classics. I'm looking forward to engaging in the group and the reading.

Every year we have literature courses, and there I really enjoyed British literature, especially Thomas Hardy and Charles Dickens' novels. Also, I like reading fantasy, crime and mystery fiction.
I'm very happy to find this friendly group! :)

Hello everyone! I am Nahyan from Bangladesh and I love to read books but particularly classics. I just love it when you read a book that has had prodigious impact on art and culture over many years for the first time! My favorite authors are The Bronte Sisters, Charles Dickens, Sylvia Plath and Jane Austen so this is definitely the group for me and I am grateful to have found it. I am very busy with a job at a factory I work 6 days a week for 9 hours a day and it takes me three hours to get from home to work! However, I still find time to read and that's what keeps me sane. This months books look fantastic! I especially look forward to reading Don Quixote, which I have read the first three chapters and the sonnets & I must say it is absolutely the best, funniest thing I have ever read!

Pink | 5491 comments Hi Nahyan, welcome to the group :)

I too love the Brontes, Plath and now Austen, but I'm yet to read much of Dickens!

Your working day sounds very long, so I admire your finding time to read on top of this. I hope you enjoy Don Quixote and join in with our discussions of the book when you get time.

Doro (ltparis) Hi everyone!
I'm Doro, I'm twenty-five and a German woman living in Germany. I'm currently going to school to become a kindergarten teacher.
I keep seeing classics and thinking 'I should read that sometime' and I was hoping this group might actually motivate me to read things.
I really like that there are several book choices every month and the quarterly read for really long pieces.

Most of my contemporary reads are Dystopian, Sci-Fi or Fantasy/Paranormal/Supernatural. Reading was an escape for me as a kid and these genres allowed me to experience a world so absolutely different from our own and the love for them just stuck. (Then again, I do believe that good Sci-Fi or Fantasy tells universal stories with themes and topics we relate to, so escape is kind of relative in that aspect, but yeah).

Heather (heathermiller) Hi all,

I'm Heather. I'm a lifelong devourer of books. I challenged myself to read 104 new (to me) books in 2015, and I realized that I haven't chosen any classics so far this year. I figured this group would give me a bit of a push to get some classics back into the mix. :)

I look forward to talking books with you. :)

JeanMarieT | 5 comments Hi Everyone,

I'm Jean. This is my first book club adventure. I've been an avid reader since I was a child. While it is hard for me to pinpoint a favorite kind of book, I suppose I would have to say auto/biographies/memoirs. I have read quite a few classics, and of course, have many more that I would like to read.

Besides reading, I am a social worker and work with homeless and abused women and children. I like to hike, kayak, and bike ride when I can find the time. My absolute favorite thing to do is alternate reading, sleeping, and swimming on a warm sandy beach-- rarely happens though unfortunately.

Welcome Jean! So glad to have you as part of the group.

Love your favorite things -- read, sleep, & swim -- and the beach.

Pink | 5491 comments Hi Jean, welcome to the group :) I think we'd all like to join you on the beach for a bit of reading, sleeping and swimming. I live close to my local beach, but unfortunately that's in rainy England, where it's rarely warm enough to bask in the sun....today's forecast, rain again!!

I hope you'll enjoy our group and look forward to chatting with you more :)
