Daisy, it is just fine that you posted on The Turn of the Screw before your introduction. But I am glad to get to know you a bit more -- I love your comments.

Daisy (bellisperennis) Kathy, you have some really interesting TBR books. Love the quote by Anthony. Have you seen the book Tillie the Terrible Swede: How One Woman, a Sewing Needle, and a Bicycle Changed History Tillie the Terrible Swede How One Woman, a Sewing Needle, and a Bicycle Changed History by Sue Stauffacher by Sue Stauffacher? I recently purchased it for my niece, but I loved it. lol

Oh Daisy. I so have to read that book now! And yes, I am quite the eclectic reader. A bit of everything.

Susan | 1 comments Hello all, I'm a mild mannered banker by day and avid reader and writer by night. Living in upper Washington State. I love a good drama, historic or travel adventure. A sap for inspirational and beautiful design books too. Poetry is my new love.

Sue | 12 comments Hi all, I'm Sue, 43, I live in Minnesota. I was recently laid off, but worked as a computer programmer. I decided earlier this year to make a concious effort to read more and fit in classics I've missed. Then I read Tolstoy and the Purple Chair My Year of Magical Reading by Nina Sankovitch

and really got more drawn into reading more than I have been for a while, though I've always read. I love it. Like Lisa above, I also use the audible app along with reading something else.
I am currently reading Dark Star Safari Overland from Cairo to Cape Town by Paul Theroux
and listening to :) The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing

but I want to join in the Dec discussion on at least one of the two chosen books here :)

Rituj Sahu | 1 comments Hello everyone! :)
I'm Rituj. I live in New Delhi in India. I studied Economics at college and now work in Financial Research Services Industry. Although I've always been interested in reading, it's only of late that I've started reading more regularly. Better late than never, as they say. And what better than Classics to get the hands deck on! ;-)
Looking forward to share some common and more importantly, some uncommon ideas with people out here.

message 111: by Tytti (last edited Dec 12, 2013 11:15AM) (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments Hi,

I am Tytti from Finland. I used to read a lot but then school and everything came and I couldn't stay up reading after midnight anymore... So now I am trying to actually finish books I have started (I get bored easily) and I find that classics are generally worth finishing, I am not so sure about others. They are also usually translated and available at the libraries. (I read Gone with the Wind in three days when I was 11 and have been trying to find something equally gripping ever since but all other heroines have felt either stupid or boring compared to Scarlett. :-/)

I am not good with challenges because I tend to read sporadically and I think I should now read the books I actually own... I have a few Finnish classics, too, that I really should and would like to read. Even the alphabet one seems to be destined to fail because two of my thickest books are written by authors whose surnames starts with W... But anyway, I am interested in classics and try to catch up with all those lists of "100 books you should read".

Welcome Tytti! So fun to meet someone from Finland. We would love to see if some of the Finnish Classics have been translated into English so that we can read with you.

Take care. Don't worry about the challenges. This is truly a no-stress group.

message 113: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Jacques | 7 comments Welcome tytti welcome to the group. I also read sporadically. I love the classics but I agree that some heroines are naive. My favorite books are Anne frank, phantom of the opera, and the picture of Dorian Gray

Some of the most famous are, though I've heard that the translations are not all of the best quality and/or they are abridged. I added the ones I know on one list, this link should show my votes (not really in order) https://www.goodreads.com/list/user_v....

Mika Waltari, Väinö Linna, Aleksis Kivi, Juhani Aho and F.E. Sillanpää (won Nobel) are older authors, Sofi Oksanen is contemporary but acclaimed. The Kalevala is probably the most famous book of them all.

Under the North Star trilogy tells a story of a Finnish family from 1880s to 1950s and I can tell you that a lot happened during those years. The Unknown Soldier is notoriously difficult to translate because of all the dialects that also tell a lot about the characters. But it's an anti-war war novel, based on Linna's own experiences during the Continuation War. (It was a very important book for Finnish veterans.) Also I believe The Egyptian was my father's favourite book so it might be an emotional read for me (but the English edition is probably abridged). There are some older female authors, too, but I am not sure if they are translated...

I read Anne Frank when I was quite young, I can't really remember what I thought about it then. I've seen the Phantom musical in London and thought it was great, should find the book sometimes. Dorian Gray is one of the books I am planning to read next year, it has been sitting on my shelf for years now...

Oh, and my problem with challenges is that I like the idea of them but knowing myself I also know that I won't do well in them...

It's always great to meet fellow educators. Things have changed so much just since I was in school; I'm glad to you had the courage to do what you needed to do when the time came for a change.

I don't know how much I will be following along with the group, exactly. I am on a rather limited budget, and I have TONS of books that I consider to be classics that sit on my shelf unread. I am about to start reading Tess of the d'Urbervilles (don't know how to italicize, sorry). If the group ever reads a book that I actually own, I will be in, though! Here's hoping! Have a great day, and thank you for the warm welcome.

Michelle | 2 comments Hello everyone, Kathy found me lurking in the shadows and asked me to step forward and introduce myself. :)
I'm a booklover who collects more books than I have time or space. During the day, I'm an accountant for my home state Oklahoma. At night, I'm a driver for 2 busy teen girls and an 11 yr old boy, ie. my kids.
I enjoy mostly mystery, thriller and historical fiction. I've had desires to read through the canon of classic literature for many years but needed a push to get me going. Hoping I can join you on some reads.

Anastasia Kinderman Hello, I'm Anastasia. I loooove reading and I've been meaning to include more of the classics in my book diet. I'm a college student so my participation might be limited 'til summer but I'm very excited to be a part of this group!

Hi All
I'm Anne and just joined GR and also this group. I am a housewife with 3 grown kids and 7 grandkids. I have lots of spare time to read and like reading lots of types of books . I'm interested in reading more of the classics. I've read some but not nearly enough . I am currently reading Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell after watching the series the past few nights. Such a beautiful story !
Excited to get to know you all.

And Kathy, thank you for the special welcome note. It was nice to be noticed in a place as big as GoodReads.
I'm new here and have to add ALL my books yet !
Not sure if I'll add them now, or as I finish reading them . They are all on my Kindle .
Looking forward to meeting you all and reading with you .

Thanks for the friendvite! I see we have some classic books in common. :) I love reading books by Jules Verne and Jane Austen. I've also just finished reading The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. I truly enjoyed reading it! I'm anxious to read more classics.

I just can't wait to get my hands on some of the works by Elizabeth Gaskell!! I loved watching Crandford and Return to Cranford as well. Also Wives and Daughters and especially North and South!!:)

message 146: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Virginia
I loved Count of Monte Cristo . Such a really good book . I'm way behind yet on adding books to my home page list. I haven't added any that I currently own, plus it's near impossible to remember every book I've ever read ,so I need to wade through some of the lists on here to see how many trigger a memory .

Kathy
Thank you for the welcome . Everyone here seems very friendly . It's a nice sized group too . Not so many people you get lost in the shuffle .
Cranford is surprisingly funny in spots.
This might sound stupid, but I'm always surprised when I read an old Classic like that (or dickens) that are so humorous in spots. I guess I think people back then were very prim and proper . It's always nice to come across some funny lines in these books.
Dickens was famous for his funny lines and descriptions, though, wasn't he ?
