Hi Sam!! Welcome! Jane Austen is one of my favorites too! Happy reading!

I’m Jessica, I’m seventeen and I’m crazy (sorry, just started reading Fahrenheit 451 and had to use the oppurtunity!). Recently I started to read more and now I want to catch up on all the classics I missed out! I read and enjoyed To Kill A Mockingbird and A Separate Peace and now there are a few books next to my bed just waiting to be devoured and even more on my wishlist. ;)

Hi Sam! I'm in the middle of a buddy read of Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd. This is my first experience with this author and I am enjoying his book.

Thanks for the explanation! And I agree with that statement "being seventeen and being crazy always go together"! Course I think any age and crazy go together!!!! :)

Also a lover of Austen and Hardy. I don't think their writing ever dies...great generation after generation.

Fair warning, Jessica: sometimes the crazy never goes away but the seventeen passes all too quickly. Looking forward to seeing your POV on the classics.

Hello Kelly! Welcome! Glad you're here!

Question: I can't seem to find the list of books for August. Can someone post them for me? Thanks!
Elvira wrote: "Hello everyone! My name is Elvira. I've been an avid reader all my life. I like fiction and biographies. My favorite authors include: Carson McCullers, John Steinbeck, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen,..."
We have very similar tastes in reading, Elvira. I'm new here as well so I hope we see one another during the August reads.

Good question about a list for August books, we didn't have one, but I've posted now in the announcement thread here
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
If you ever want to know what we're reading, or which books are up next, these should also show at the top of the group page.
Hope you find something to join us with :)

I couldn't agree more on that, its a delight to be surrounded with readers. As far as I could remember I'm reading books. :)

Kelly, glad you've rediscovered time for reading now you've graduated. I envy anyone who finds time to read for pleasure on top of studies. Hopefully you'll discover some great books with our group.
Kitty, another English student, I think there are plenty of others in this group too. I have a soft spot for gothic novels as well, but like you, I'll give most things a try. Good luck with making your transformation into a disney princess!

Stay at home mom now, registered nurse. Like to read and craft. I read lots of PNR. Im also a member of literary darkness so I try to keep up with their read if its interesting. But I like my classics so if its interesting and something I havent read before Ill keep up with this group too.

Welcome Sylvia!! This is definitely the place for classical books and discussions! Happy reading!

Sorry, my bad! Welcome Sylwia!!!

I'm Owen, a writer, reader, academic. I've got two kids and a lovely wife. I live in Ontario, Canada.
I'm the kind of reader who ..."
Welcome Owen!

I'm Lise and live in Paris (please excuse my approximate english). I'm really glad for founding this group : I hope it will motivate me to discover some classics I didn't have the courage to read before!
Dickens, Victor Hugo, Dostoyevsky and Faulkner (I'm not sure if this one is already a classic author) count in my favorite authors list.

Owen, I read Perfume a couple of months ago and saw the film version too, I really enjoyed both, so I'm looking forward to discussing this one next month :)

Hi Lise, welcome! So nice to have you here! I'm sure you'll enjoy reading all the classics! I too enjoy reading Dostoyevsky. Happy reading!

I have left my motherland (lol) almost a decade ago; i have lived in the UK, and now i'm in Australia. So i'm catching up on the English classics (and French, and American and etc)
I love books!

After many, many years out of school, this year I have begun making a concerted effort to read more classic literature - everything from Homer to Henry James. I've barely begun, though, and I think this group will be a great opportunity to place some structure around the reading I want to do.
I'm looking forward to it!

Hi Susannah! Welcome to the group. You've come to the right place to read and discuss classics. Enjoy and happy reading!

But I can't help thinking, how marvelous to have Lise from Paris, Daria from Russia, Owen from Canada, and Susannah from exotic mysterious California. (certain I've missed someone...more apologies!)
I do want to ask Daria...if you could recommend a Russian author, that is perhaps out of the mainstream. I've read Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, loved em both, but is there someone perhaps a bit more obscure you would recommend?

Hi Joseph, Thank you for the question!
Oh, goodness...It all depends on what you like..But i'm going to name a few books which had an impact on me.
First is The Pit by Alexandr Kuprin. It's a gripping story about the life of courtesans in tsarist Russia. It is not merely a description. It revolves around a few of them living in one "house" together and their relationships with their clients - so it has a lot of dialogues, life stories etc.
Next is the Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol. It is a story of a sort of a fraud where the main character buys dead peasants (well, their names, more accurately) of their landowners. Each person the main character meets serves as a "representative" (let's call them that) of a particular trait of Russian character prevalent then (and perhaps now, lol).
Mmmm...short stories by Anton Chekhov. Each is very short and to the point. Different themes: Russian character, politics, culture etc
Have a read, browse my library whilst i'll try to keep updating it. It's so incredibly hard to remember all the book i've ever read!

Hi Caity! Welcome to the group! I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself here reading classics. Happy reading!

Thanks Daria! I note your recommendation for The Pit by Alexandr Kuprin. As you, I really enjoyed The Dead Souls by Gogol.

I love to read, a lot. I recently came back to reading Classics, reading the classics my daughter had to read for school, and am now eager to read every classics I can put my hand on:)
So glad I found this group! So many great reads to come!

Hello Madle, welcome to our group too. You mention lots of great modern classic authors and a few of my favourites. I'm glad you'll be joining us for some August group reads. I've recently finished Persuasion and I can't wait to watch the film, as I too love this format. It's rare that I watch before reading the book though. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it here and look forward to discussing some classics!

Welcome Ani! I'm glad you've joined us. I can understand that it's sometimes difficult to find time for reading. I'm having that problem myself lately! I try to always read for at least a few minutes in bed before I fall asleep though. I hope you find time to join us for one of our group reads.
