Samantha Panther (samthompson) Hi I'm Sam and have been a lover of books since I was very small. I take after my Mum, Nan and older Sister who are all avid readers. I love the classics and my favourite classic authors are Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy.

message 1404: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 2 comments Hello everyone!
I’m Jessica, I’m seventeen and I’m crazy (sorry, just started reading Fahrenheit 451 and had to use the oppurtunity!). Recently I started to read more and now I want to catch up on all the classics I missed out! I read and enjoyed To Kill A Mockingbird and A Separate Peace and now there are a few books next to my bed just waiting to be devoured and even more on my wishlist. ;)

message 1405: by Loretta (new)

Loretta | 2200 comments Hi Jessica! A hardy welcome! Since I've not read Fahrenheit 451, I don't get the joke, but the book is on my To Be Read list! Happy reading!

message 1406: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 2 comments Thanks, Loretta! Explanation of the joke (no spoiler): A character says that because her uncle told her that being seventeen and being crazy always go together. I read the first of three parts today, so I cannot say a how good the entire book is, but so far it’s a nice one. Short and sweet and easy to get into. And the characters are frustrating in the best way possible.

Hi Sam! I'm in the middle of a buddy read of Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd. This is my first experience with this author and I am enjoying his book.

Also a lover of Austen and Hardy. I don't think their writing ever dies...great generation after generation.

Fair warning, Jessica: sometimes the crazy never goes away but the seventeen passes all too quickly. Looking forward to seeing your POV on the classics.

message 1411: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Covey | 2 comments Hello, everyone! I'm Kelly from California. Since I graduated college a little over a year ago, I realized how little time I spent reading simply because I was always so busy. I'm looking to motivate myself to read more, and this friendly group seems like the perfect place to start! Looking forward to reading with you! :)

message 1412: by Lu (new)

Lu (analureads) | 49 comments Welcome, Kelly! I completely see what you mean. I'm currently in my second year of university and sometimes I struggle to read as much as I want to simply because there's so much going on all the time. I decided then to make reading a part of my daily routine so that I don't fall off the bandwagon and stop reading altogether haha.

message 1413: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Covey | 2 comments For a while, I actually did stop reading! But now that I'm setting aside dedicated reading time every day, life is so much better, haha.

message 1415: by Elvira (new)

Elvira Dobis Hello everyone! My name is Elvira. I've been an avid reader all my life. I like fiction and biographies. My favorite authors include: Carson McCullers, John Steinbeck, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, and many others. A few years ago I started reading classic novels, inspired by the Easton Press list of 100 Greatest Books Ever Written. I've done about 1/4 of the list so far. Anyway, I look forward to discussing great books with you all!

Question: I can't seem to find the list of books for August. Can someone post them for me? Thanks!

We have very similar tastes in reading, Elvira. I'm new here as well so I hope we see one another during the August reads.

message 1417: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Hi Elvira, welcome to the group :)

Good question about a list for August books, we didn't have one, but I've posted now in the announcement thread here

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If you ever want to know what we're reading, or which books are up next, these should also show at the top of the group page.

Hope you find something to join us with :)

Kitty (0ookittyoo0) Hello everyone I'm Kitty! I am currently an English Student so have read my fair share of Classics but am ever desirous of discovering more!I will pretty much put up with any book provided it has an intriguing plot and solid characters but have a soft spot for the Gothic. When not reading I like to sing, sew and make dresses out of curtains because I WILL BE A DISNEY PRINCESS I TELL YOU!

I couldn't agree more on that, its a delight to be surrounded with readers. As far as I could remember I'm reading books. :)

message 1420: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Jessica, welcome to the group. I'm in agreement with Sara that the craziness might not pass, but 17 flies by!

Kelly, glad you've rediscovered time for reading now you've graduated. I envy anyone who finds time to read for pleasure on top of studies. Hopefully you'll discover some great books with our group.

Kitty, another English student, I think there are plenty of others in this group too. I have a soft spot for gothic novels as well, but like you, I'll give most things a try. Good luck with making your transformation into a disney princess!

Dickens, Victor Hugo, Dostoyevsky and Faulkner (I'm not sure if this one is already a classic author) count in my favorite authors list.

Susannah (susannah-n) | 9 comments Hello, my name is Susannah, and I live in California in the United States.

After many, many years out of school, this year I have begun making a concerted effort to read more classic literature - everything from Homer to Henry James. I've barely begun, though, and I think this group will be a great opportunity to place some structure around the reading I want to do.

I'm looking forward to it!

message 1439: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Fountain | 296 comments Goodness, such wonderful eclectic readers we are gaining. I am disinclined to welcome new members, as I have failed to welcome sooo many previously...apologies for that.

But I can't help thinking, how marvelous to have Lise from Paris, Daria from Russia, Owen from Canada, and Susannah from exotic mysterious California. (certain I've missed someone...more apologies!)

I do want to ask Daria...if you could recommend a Russian author, that is perhaps out of the mainstream. I've read Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, loved em both, but is there someone perhaps a bit more obscure you would recommend?

Hi Joseph, Thank you for the question!
Oh, goodness...It all depends on what you like..But i'm going to name a few books which had an impact on me.
First is The Pit by Alexandr Kuprin. It's a gripping story about the life of courtesans in tsarist Russia. It is not merely a description. It revolves around a few of them living in one "house" together and their relationships with their clients - so it has a lot of dialogues, life stories etc.
Next is the Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol. It is a story of a sort of a fraud where the main character buys dead peasants (well, their names, more accurately) of their landowners. Each person the main character meets serves as a "representative" (let's call them that) of a particular trait of Russian character prevalent then (and perhaps now, lol).
Mmmm...short stories by Anton Chekhov. Each is very short and to the point. Different themes: Russian character, politics, culture etc
Have a read, browse my library whilst i'll try to keep updating it. It's so incredibly hard to remember all the book i've ever read!

I love to read, a lot. I recently came back to reading Classics, reading the classics my daughter had to read for school, and am now eager to read every classics I can put my hand on:)
So glad I found this group! So many great reads to come!

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Virginie, Paris and Hong Kong sound like a wonderful mix. I'm glad you're returning to classics again. I've recently done the same thing, reading books my daughter required for school. It was a fun way to discover new reads and discuss books together. I hope you find some great books with our group as well :)

Hello Madle, welcome to our group too. You mention lots of great modern classic authors and a few of my favourites. I'm glad you'll be joining us for some August group reads. I've recently finished Persuasion and I can't wait to watch the film, as I too love this format. It's rare that I watch before reading the book though. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it here and look forward to discussing some classics!
