Victoria (ohfiddlesticks) | 14 comments Hi!

I run a bookclub of my own here on Good Reads, but I thought it would be fun to join this group because I have made it my goal to catch up on the classics that I haven't read yet!

Aside from reading, I enjoy writing, cooking/baking, gardening, organizing, and photography!

My favorite books tend to be mysteries, biographies/autobiographies/memoirs, theology, and literature from the first half of the 20th Century. Lately, I've returned to Historical Fiction and occasionally I'm up for something that's just a good story.

Hi Victoria! Historical Fiction is one of my favorite genres, too. I hope you are able to join us for some of our group reads. Welcome to the group!

Caroline So excited to have the motivation to read all these classics on my shelf-- it's so daunting!

Hi Mary Caroline! Being a part of this group has definitely inspired me to read more classics. I hope you have the same experience, and please join us in our discussions. Welcome! :-)

Katerina | 9 comments Hi everyone,
my name is Kate, I`m from Macedonia, Europe. I research a lot before I start reading a book so, one way or another it is almost always a classic. My favorites are Woolf and Kundera, and from my region Meša Selimović.

Hjpalmer3 | 3 comments Hi all, I'm Harrison. I live in Zushi, Japan with my expecting wife. I love classic literature as well as science fiction, especially anything that could be considered both! I don't have a lot of free time (I am in the US Navy) but I'm trying to work through my classic literature reading list as much as I can. My favorites so far are definitely Hermann Hesse, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Alexander Dumas.

message 1157: by Dylan (new)

Dylan Toropov Hey all,

I'm Dave, I'm in Chicago, and I'm 26. I've always loved books but I'm trying to make reading more of my regular day-to-day routine and really enjoy the art of the language and the stories. I usually prefer to read classics and political theory but I also would love to read some horror or fantasy for fun. Some of my favorite authors are Faulkner, Lester Bangs, and Stephen Crane. I'm excited to read with you all and contribute to discussions!

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome everyone:)

Just looking at a few of the posts above what a diverse range of countries we all come from! I like that in a book group, as we get a variety of tastes and influences from other cultures. (I'm in England by the way)

Kate, I haven't heard of your regional author, but see his most popular book is Death and the Dervish. Have you read this one? Would you recommend it as a good place to start?

Hi Harrison, welcome to the group. Japan sounds amazing to me, how long have you and your wife been there? Is it a first child you're expecting?

You'll find plenty of likeminded classic book lovers here. If you're a Dostoevsky and Dumas fan you might like to jump into our current group discussions. We're reading Notes from Underground for our 'Old School' March book and just finishing up with The Count of Monte Cristo for our 1st quarter 2015 read (Jan-March). Feel free to post any thoughts you have :)

Welcome Dave, glad you've joined us! I haven't read anything by your favourite authors yet. In fact I attempted some Faulkner today, but didn't get very far!

Please jump into whichever book discussions that take your interest. We have a four current reads at the moment, but also keep old threads open if you want to post on previous group books :)

message 1161: by Hjpalmer3 (new)

Hjpalmer3 | 3 comments Thanks Pink! I will try to pick up a copy of Notes from the Underground, I have been wanting to read it for a while now. This is our first child and we love Japan, though we were spoiled living in Guam for several years and really miss it. We have been here almost a year.

message 1162: by Pink (last edited Mar 20, 2015 11:07AM) (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Harrison, I googled Guam, just looking at the location I think you were spoiled! Though I'm sure Japan is great too (not jealous, honest). Good luck with your first child, exciting times!

If it helps, Notes from Underground is available for free on kindle.

Faulkner can be really difficult, for sure. His writing is so beautiful though, for me, that when in doubt I just get lost in the streams of the words and the images.

message 1164: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Dave, I probably just need to give Faulkner more of a chance. I had the same issue with Hemingway and then he ended up as one of my favourites authors.

message 1165: by Dylan (new)

Dylan Toropov For sure. I liked "The Old Man and the Sea" a lot when I read it years and years ago, but I had a teacher who hated on Hemingway all the time in college so I unfortunately haven't given him much of a chance. I think it's time to change that! Do you like any of his books in particular? I want to read the one about the Spanish Civil War, I think that's "For Whom The Bell Tolls"?

message 1166: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments My favourite Hemingway is A farewell to arms, followed by The Sun also rises. Lots of people love A Moveable Feast the most, but I hated that one. I liked The Old Man and the Sea, but haven't read For whom the Bell tolls yet, perhaps I'll nominate it for our next 'new school' book nominations, haha!

message 1167: by Dylan (new)

Dylan Toropov I would second that! :-)

That`s his best work. We call him "The Balkan`s Dostoevksy".
I had an idea to open a discussion about everyone`s region classics, if you think it would be interesting.

message 1169: by Dylan (new)

Dylan Toropov Katerina - I think that's an awesome idea! Have members nominate the best literature from where they're from and we all read them together? What do you think?

Manuel Sanchez | 5 comments Hello from Miami! My name is Manny and I am a very eclectic reader...actually eclectic in a great many things, music, art and literature. I also make it a point to read in Spanish, but only for Spanish authors. I include each month at least one classical work, one Spanish work and then whatever fancies me at the moment...Science Fiction, history, fantasy, spiritual, sociological and even science. Look forward to making your acquaintance!

Thanks for the welcome. I struggle with Spanish so this is a way to keep from losing the skill outright. Decided not to read American/English authors in Spanish - made no sense to me...so I limit my Spanish reading to Spanish authors. My maternal grandfather was from Marietta Georgia...went to Cuba with Teddy Roosevelt and stayed. Family returned to States after Castro, hence my Spanish surname (and first name).

message 1179: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Conan, Beowulf is available for free on kindle if that's what you're looking for? Probably a different translation though. I'll post some links for places to access this online when I open the discussion thread in a couple of days. I expect there will be various translations, but any of these would be fine for a group read, it's just down to personal preference.

Benjamin Bohman Hello everyone! My favorite pastime is reading, mainly the classics. I also enjoy science fiction and fantasy, though originality is hard to come by; that's exactly why I love classics. Dickens and Hugo are definitely my favorite authors, but I still have many works and authors ahead of me (War and Peace is next).

message 1184: by Adrianna (new)

Adrianna (adriannab) Hi guys!

My name is Adrianna (shortly Ada) and I live in Warsaw, Poland. Currently I am a psychology and sociology student which means a lot of reading, but mainly hard, scientific books. As a way to distract myself and relax I decided to come back to classics (and modern literature as well).

As a child I was a full-time bookworm (which caused some skinned knees and bruises because of reading while walking) and I would love to rediscover this child within me (maybe spare me some bruises).

As for favourites, I have a love-hate relationship with J.D. Salinger, I enjoy F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Mikhail Bulgakov, Milan Kundera and I wish there were more classics published in Poland by W. Somerset Maugham because I adored "The Painted Veil".

I also have a pretty big collection of Polish authors that I enjoy, if anyone is interested in broading their horizons.

As someone earlier said, I'm looking for some new friends interested in something more than Twilight and 50 Shades of Gray :D

message 1185: by Ryan (new)

Ryan (withicecream99) Hello there everyone!

I'm Ryan from Wisconsin. I absolutely love reading classics! My favorite author would probably be Hemingway, though I try to read a variety (of classics, that is). I also really like Charles Lamb and other Romantic authors/poets for some reason.

I would like to, at some point, get into some more modern literature again, but there are just so many great classics that I figured I'd try to tackle them first!
