Muhannad Klaus | 2 comments Hey. I'm Muhannad from Latakia, Syria. I'm a 23-year-old guy with a BA in English language and literature. I'm starting my MA and PhD in English, Ugaritic, and German Comparative lit. in a year or so. Reading "classics" has grown on me as of late and I'm more than ready to take on such a delightful reading challenge and explore the still untrodden corridors burrowed far and deep in those ever-interesting reads.

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) Thanks, Maarit!

Muhannad, what is Ugaritic? Is it a Syrian language? Good luck with your studies and happy reading!

message 960: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments Wow, Muhannad, Ugaritic! That sounds interesting. I had to google it, I hadn't heard of it before.

Welcome all!

message 961: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) Of course - google, why hadn't I thought of that...!

Great to be learning such a language from your own country!

I've been meaning to read The Woman in White for a long while now too. Hope to see you in the discussion.

And welcome to all of our newest members. We have some great moderators that keep the group going and always fun.

message 964: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) Thanks, Katy! I m looking forward to The Woman in White, too!

I ve found out that active moderators who enjoy making great challenges and participate actively in group reads etc. are very important, otherwise a group bleeds dead. So I m looking forward to participating and having loads of fun - together with you all!

Muhannad Klaus | 2 comments Thanks all for the warm welcomes. Ugaritic is the language with the first alphabet in the whole wide world. Nobody is speaking it nowadays and it's next to dead. The literature Ugaritans left behind is massive and many argue that it gave ground to lots of still-alive myths and religious anecdotes. I'll tell you all about it by and by. Maybe upload some great stuff on here and see if they ever ring a bell with what we're reading in classics.

Joseph Fountain | 296 comments Hello all, I'm Joseph. I'm originally from Michigan, I've lived in five countries on three continents, and traveled to about 20 (countries, not continents). I currently live and work in Virginia. I'm on a quest to read the 100 Greatest Novels of all Time. I'm on #32 now, and as I only today discovered Good Reads, it will take a bit before I update all my previous reads/reviews. I'm going to keep reviews short on GR anyway, but you please see the full review at:
http://100greatestnovelsofalltimeques...

I love feedback, so feel free. I'm especially interested in thoughts on how I came up with the list.

Cheers

Joseph

Welcome to the group, Joseph! Your list is great. I was also motivated to start reading more classics after I stumbled upon some "greatest books" lists and was surprised by how few of them I'd read. Your blog looks very interesting - I will have to try to read some of your reviews!

Kathleen Savala I'm Kathleen, 27 and live in East Hollywood with my large newfoundland dog. Escaping into other worlds is my favorite thing so I like to read fantasy and classics - stuff that either takes place in an imaginary land or a different time period. I was married for 8 years and didn't get to read as much as I love to because my time was so revolved around someone else, now that I am on my own I'm excited to get back consistently into what I love.
I also have a major, major problem buying books way faster than I can read them, and I have difficulty finishing books longer than 300 pages so I hope this group will be motivation to press on and start knocking out everything on my shelves. :)

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Hi Kathleen, Hi Tracy!

Kathleen, I can relate to buying books faster than you are able to read them. This "problem" for me has gotten worse since I can download eBooks from my iPhone or pc and order used books via the PC as well ;).

Hi Kathleen! Newfoundlands are adorable! I can relate with buying so many books. I try to stop myself, but so far I've only succeeded in restricting myself to really good deals. ;-) I hope you're able to join some of our group reads. I know that being a part of this group is helping me conquer some of the longer books that I've been meaning to read for a long time. Welcome!

I've spent the last year reconnecting with reading fiction after many years of studying took the shine off reading for pleasure. Emarosa89 | 5 comments Hey everyone,

My name is Zach. I have dabbled in literature all through my schooling and then slowly realized my enjoyment of reading through contemporary novels which I read pleasure outside of my coursework. Recently, I got to a point where I became more interested in the art of literature, and decided I wanted to get to know its roots. The motivation/first steps came when I decided I wanted to read "Ulysses" and then figured I should read the "The Odyssey" first, and then, naturally, I figured I ought to start with "The Iliad". I joined this group because I am searching for peers to learn and share with while I go along on my adventures through literature.

Welcome to the group, Gene! There are several ways to get involved in the group. First, the group has four "group reads" going on all the time: Three monthly selections, and one quarterly "long read" selection. You can jump in to any of these reads, and then participate in the associated book discussion threads.

You can also nominate books for group reads, vote in group read selection polls, and participate in group challenges.

Discussion threads for our group reads always remain open, so if you read a book that has been a previous group read selection you can always add your comments about that book to the related discussion thread. Or, if you read a book that has not been selected as a group read and want to discuss it, you can always start a new thread in the Book Chatter section.

I hope you enjoy the group!

Kramomis Kramomis (marksimo) | 2 comments Hello Christine. Thanks for the welcome :)
It's a romanticisation of Three Kingdoms era China. It's based on a real period in Chinese history but contains a lot of myths and legends regarding the period. I highly recommend it, I find the writing top notch and the book contains many political and moral themes.

Vatsa | 46 comments Hi, all!
I'm Vatsa from Mysooru, India in my final year of engineering.
In my 8th grade, Harry Potter and Sherlock Holmes put me on reading track and they are my favourites too.
Lately I love Alexandre Dumas's books and Hitchhiker's guide to galaxy.
I seem to be reading only popular, must-read books and there are many under classics and sci-fi/fantasy.
Presently reading 2001:space odyssey after watching Interstellar
