message 901: by Marco (new)

Marco den Ouden I'm retiring at the end of the week and want to get around to reading some classics I have missed. I started in on this a year ago by reading Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as well as re-reading a few I hadn't read in years like Orwell's 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World. I just finished She by H. Rider Haggard and on Sunday I picked up Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird which I've never read though I have seen the movie.

I just bought Frankenstein today and plan on reading it soon too! I did To Kill a Mockingbird for GCSE and absolutely love it. What are your thoughts on it at the moment?

Welcome Marco. Hope you enjoy To Kill a Mockingbird -- it is one of my favorites.

message 904: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've listened and read Frankenstein several times. I recently purchased an edition read by Dan Stevens (of Downton Abbey fame). What I really want to get is the Annotated Frankenstein that was recently published: http://www.amazon.com/Annotated-Frank...

That looks like a beautiful copy! I just went for the Penguin English Library one to match my copy of Jane Eyre!

message 906: by EleonoraF (new)

EleonoraF (eleonora1679) Hi, I'm Eleonora from Italy. I work in an academic library.
I have many classics on my TBR list, so I think this group is cut out for me :)

message 907: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, my name is Darlene. I'm an avid reader and book reviewer. I am in other bok groups but want to read along with your classics when you have some on my shelves. I hope I am welcome to join you all in discussions and group readings.

message 908: by Karen (new)

Karen Williams Hi, I'm Karen. I live in Greensboro, NC with my husband, my 16 year old daughter, and my Swiss dog. I read on weekends or on airplanes on business trips. I decided to start reading the books that "one should have read" but hadn't. Along the way, I have found many wonderful books. I have not listed everything I have read yet. But I am looking forward to some discussions about these wonderful classics. As a general rule, I prefer fiction, but occasionally read other things.

message 909: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Your dog is Swiss? Do you have to use a different language with him/her?

message 910: by Karen (new)

Karen Williams Hi Kirsten. We lived in Switzerland for 5 years and got him from a shelter there. He is multilingual! His first language is Swiss-German which we still use for some things (like komm instead of come)but he learned English very quickly- especially words related to food or walk. I think he knows a little French too

message 911: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) LOL! My dog is monolingual ... and hard of hearing!

message 921: by Annina (new)

Annina (swanilda) Hi, my name is Annina and I'm from Finland. I like to read mostly fantasy books and I tend to read over and over again the same books. So I'd like to step out of my comfort zone and educate myself with classics I've never read before.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Welcome Chaya Sara and Annina!

The more, the merrier!

message 923: by H (new)

H (hiisdaarkmaaterials) | 8 comments Ha! I never introduced myself. Heather, 22. Addicted to reading, read mostly everything except erotica and paranormal! Particularly love good fantasy, historical fiction and Asian literature! Love me a good classic too, aim to read one a month!

Jennifer Hi, I'm Jennifer. I am married and love to read. I have read many classics but not as much as I would like. I am so glad to join this group. Hopefully, I will be motivated to read more classics. Thanks!

message 926: by Ritsumei (new)

Ritsumei Hi! I'm a homeschool mom, and an aspiring author, and I'm loving reading some classics. We never read many in school, but I'm now discovering some of what I've missed out on. Right now I'm alternating between a The a Three Musketeers and Les Miserables, as well as the Federalist Papers.

message 927: by Katy, Quarterly Long Reads (new)

Katy (kathy_h) | 9553 comments Mod
Welcome, DoriAnn. Glad to have you here. Great books to read, I do need to continue the Federalist Papers.

message 928: by Ritsumei (new)

Ritsumei The Federalist are tough! My BIL gave me a lecture series, The Great Debate, done by The Great Courses, and it's been fantastic for giving some setting, which really helps!! They've been much easier since I got that.

message 929: by Katy, Quarterly Long Reads (new)

Katy (kathy_h) | 9553 comments Mod
I love Great Courses!

message 930: by Ritsumei (new)

Ritsumei The Great Debate is the only one I've tried thus far, and I'm super slow at it, because I can't give myself permission to move to the next lecture until I've read all the considerable readings, and usually also listened to the lecture several times, which, on top of homeschooling, is not a quick process.

It is kind of mind-boggling to realize that these were "just" opinion pieces, written for the newspapers, in order to persuade Common Joe to vote in favor of the Constitution! This is my 3rd attempt at reading them!

message 933: by Eman (new)

Eman (ebibliophile) | 10 comments Hello everyone! My name is Eman and I live in Kuwait. I basically joined this group because its title explains it all.. I'd love to catch up on most of the amazing classic novels. I particularly love the 19th century literature.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Hi Eman!

message 935: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (loribagreads) | 2 comments I should have found this group sooner!

Hello, I am Raine from the Philippines, and I'm on my 3rd year as a psychology student. I love (in no order) animals, books, blogging, photography, and swimming.

I read books regardless of their genre, as long as there is NO INSTA-LOVE. I admit it's hard, and I've had a lot of misreads before. That's why I really love classics. Also because I have an old soul.

message 936: by Christine (new)

Christine | 971 comments Welcome, Eman and Lorraine! Glad to see you both here!

message 937: by Mark (new)

Mark | 7 comments Hi Everybody,

I'm relatively new to GoodReads and this is the first group I have joined. Not one for groups and such but this one tickled my fancy so I said go for it. Uhmm...

I'm Mark, I'm from Ireland, I'm a scientist when I can find work and a general lover of arty stuff when I cannot. I'm 27, love travelling, just back from the Netherlands and want to go back.

Currently reading Great Expectations and have just gobbled up The Picture of Dorian Gray. Love Oscar Wilde's ways and sayings, he's a funny fecker I must say. Just bought his complete works too, so that will be devoured in due time I'm sure. Don't know really what else to say, ask away if you so wish.

Greetings.
M

Christine | 971 comments Welcome to the group Mark! I hope you enjoy being a part of it. I know being a member here has lead me to reading some great books. :-)

message 939: by Mark (new)

Mark | 7 comments Thank you Christine, I don't know I can contribute yet, but I'm sure my purpose here shall unfold in due course. Every new door leads to somewhere else. I was recommended to GoodReads by a friend who has her own book group here somewhere, I was intrigued so I decided to make an account. I quit social media a few weeks ago, but this is my kind of social. Anyway.. Thank you for the welcome.

Lovely word there, tutelage. I was in Boston before, marched in the St. Patrick's Day parade with an Irish band. Then went and got absolutely trollied after mass. :) How Irish of us.. Lovely city, lovely time. Peace out.

Irlana Bondar | 1 comments Hello readers. My name is Irlana. I came from Ukraine, but I am currently living in Canada. Literature is my passion. I love classics, especially English and American authors, but I always explore something new to wider my knowledge. The last ones were some Den Brown books.

Amourose Langer Hello avid readers!

My name is Amourose, and I'm a Danish writer and musician, currently working on my first album and second book. I live in Copenhagen with the love of my life - a fellow author.

My next catch-up classics includes Romeo & Juliet, Symposium, 1984, Candide, The Outsider, The Great Gatsby, Either/Or and Jane Eyre.

My latest conquest was The Metamorphosis.

I look forward to being inspired!

Amourose

Christine | 971 comments Welcome to the group Badger! I'm glad you're enjoying the discussion threads. I have never read Faulkner - a few of his books have been sitting on my TBR for awhile, but I haven't worked up the nerve to tackle them yet. Which of his books are you reading?

message 950: by Elsbeth (last edited Oct 06, 2014 08:42AM) (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) Hi all!
I'm part of another group, where Mary belongs to, too. She said you are going to read The Woman in White next month (one I've been meaning to read a long time, but always other books came in between, because it is such a long read...). And since this group seems very nice, I've decided to join you.

I live in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. I'm married and have a son (Yannick = 8) and a daughter (Annika = 5). I work in a small bookshop, where I (I'm sorry to say) sell more cigarettes, magazines and stamps than books... It is just not that kind of neighbourhood... Of course, when someone does buy a book, that makes me really happy! We have a few customers who buy loads of books ('I've already borrowed it from the library, but loved it so much I wanted to have it for myself' and things like that they say).
My husband thinks our bookshelves are full enough (and sadly, I have to agree...). So now I only buy books from writers I really, really love. Like: Isabel Allende, Ken Follett (only his historical novels), Rebecca Gablé (a german writer who writes historical novels mainly about England - a bit weird reading about England in German ;)... But I got used to it) and J.K. Rowling (that includes her books as Robert Galbraith).
When I want to read something else, I use my ereader. You can download so many amazing books for free!! On www.storycartel.com (free ebooks in exchange for an honest review) or www.smashwords.com or classics from www.gutenberg.com or www.girlebooks.com (books by and for women).

I'm looking forward to participating in this group. Happy reading, everyone!
