I saw it at Akateeminen. I've read most of the Sherlock stories as a kid, but not all were translated/available in our library then. So now I can't remember what I have read and what not... I have the 56 short stories in English, though. And yep, there just were so many of you, and us, there.

Lisa Fuller Hi! My name is Lisa and I just graduated from High School. While trying to stay mentally sharp this summer I've decided to read the classics and would love to have a group to read them with. This group seems perfect for the task! I just hope I can keep up on the readings:)

Tytti | 1010 comments Hello, Marc, I just "found" a copy of Steinbeck's The Wayward Bus. I have never read anything by him, I just recognize the names of his novels. I guess he just feels very "American" to me. Hopefully some day I'll manage to read it...

message 757: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Hi Marc, welcome!

Tytti, I haven't read that one. I added it to my tbr :).

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Marc wrote: "...and have read alot of John Steinbeck and Graham Greene "

I had to look up Graham Greene. I love Steinbeck, so I figured I should check out your other mentioned, b/c I'd likely enjoy that as well :). I recently have added both The Quiet American and Our Man in Havana, by Greene to my tbr. Now, if I could just manage to find time to read one of them ... :p

message 759: by Tytti (last edited May 31, 2014 08:05AM) (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments Yes, Marc, I sort of knew he must be one of the better authors. (There are not that many who have won both Pulitzer and Nobel. We had a pub quiz question about that but the answer was Faulkner, we answered Hemingway.) I just don't have a "feel" about him as a writer, though I have seen East of Eden and maybe some other movie, too.

MK, you didn't know Greene? I have had The Quiet American on my "mental list" for a long time, I think I once even borrowed it from the library but failed to read it. It's one of those books I have seen/read referances in other places.

Oh, and I think you better add Scènes de la Vie de Bohème, I know what you are like. Not that many books have been adapted into operas (and into films by Kaurismäki and others and into a musical Rent).

No, I'm really terrible with names. I just added two of his to my tbr in April b/c they sounded great, but the name didn't stick in my memory.

Thx, Marc :). I think I recall reading that, about possibly being inspirartion for Bond. Not sure now, it feels familiar tho.

message 762: by Aleta (new)

Aleta Thank you MK, nice to meet you :)

Lol me too. Hmmm, poetry and short stories, can't say I've read much of that either. I've really been wanting to read some, but with poems I can't figure out if it's necessary to analyze them when reading them, hence have been hesitant to begin lol :)
Glad to hear this really is a casual group - they're the best ones!

I quess the famous sentence is the one that has stick to my mind: "I never knew a man who had better motives for all the trouble he caused". Also I find it interesting that this was written a decade before the Vietnam war. I think Greene was pretty farsighted in the matter.

Yes, he sounds like an author well worth reading. I just have to find the time :p

Too many book clubs! I'm going to have to start paring down on some. I don't WANT to tho. The books always sound SO great. LOL

My speedreading idea ended up sounding like a bad idea. I guess I'll have to be a grown up about it, and moderate. :D

lucy (lucyomnom) | 3 comments Hi my names Lucy. I have been quite an avid Fantasy reader for a while but recently wanted to start branching out. I picked up a copy of Wuthering Heights and ended up really enjoying it. I am now onto Jane Eyre and excited about all the books that lay before me.

I have been in Fantasy groups and really enjoyed community reads, so im looking forward to joining you guys on your book adventures.

message 769: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Hi Eusebius Clay, Hi Lucy! Welcome to you both :)

Eusebius, we have 3-4 choices each month, so hopefully you'll find a few that you'll be interested in. And Lucy, I love Fantasy as well, one of my favorite genres. I agree, reading with a group is very enjoyable. I love to hear others takes on the same book. So many times I see something I would never have seen otherwise.

Yes, the old threads stay open. Add your comments if you read some, Lucy :). Also, each month we have a 'revisit the shelf' group read, where one of the books that have already been read by the group is featured again. So you can nominate past books for new group reads.

Lol! :) I've been contemplating whether or not to try reading Lolita - my "gentle" soul may make it impossible for me to read it without throwing up over the whole creepy-old-teacher-affair-with-really-young-pupil-thing! I'm honestly afraid to read it (yes I am THAT much of a wimp! ;)

Oh, the old group-read threads stay open? That's great! I've been meaning to read War & Peace for a while now and would love to do it with a discussion, but with only a month to go, finishing it in time would be nigh impossible :b

I am struggling hard with Lolita, that's for sure! The writing is AMAZING, though. And he's not even a native English speaker! I'm going to look to read something else by Nabokov after. Maybe Pale Fire, which is one he's supposed to be famous for.

No worries on only one month left for War & Peace. I got swept away by other things just a couple weeks in, and am only just hoping to get back to it next week. I'll be finishing late, and I know others are too. Jump in!!

Hopefully some of those who finish and/or are further on, will still be interested in answering us straggler's questions :D

eta - ps - yep! Old threads always open and available for diving into, whenever it strikes your fancy. :)

message 774: by MK (last edited Jun 01, 2014 02:00PM) (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments double ps! It's even worse than a teacher-pupil affair -- he's her stepfather, which means she can't escape him at home, no safe refuge!

message 775: by Aleta (last edited Jun 02, 2014 11:34AM) (new)

Aleta Yikes, what a creep! Maybe I should try reading something else by Nabokov at some point, instead of starting with something that disturbing. I can't imagine how trying it must be to write a book like that...

Not sure I'll have the time to get W&P started yet - so much to read so little time! :b I feel like I have so many books to catch up on - most of the books on my read-shelf here are children's/YA ones LOL. I used to read constantly, but then sickness started preventing me from it; this year is the first since I was a teen that I've been able to be read properly again :) Which means I'm seriously lacking in the serious, adult section of the library! :b

Thats great! Im also wanting to read W + P. I might be able to start with it next month.

message 777: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Aleta, sorry to hear about your sickness. I hear you on the books/time balance equation :)

lol on serious/adult section! I'm agnostic to age target, I just like good reading :D (The Secret Garden is amazing, for example!)

Lucy, great! and welcome to the W&P read! I'll see you there next month, I'm sure, as I know I'll be late finishing.

message 778: by Aleta (new)

Aleta Thank you, MK :) At least I'm getting better now and able to read again, woohoo!

Definitely with you on that, as long as it's a good book, who cares what agegroup it's for! But after years of only being able to read maybe one chick-lit a year, I feel the need to read some more heavy books lol ;)
Maybe I should read that book some day. I've had 'A Little Princess' by the same author on my tbr list for years now. I watched both movie versions of it over and over again as a kid, it's just such a sweet story!

Simona Liptáková (ssajmi) Okay, well... hello everyone! I don't usually do these introductions, I rather stay in a shadow as a silent stalker but I thought I might try it this time.

My name's Simona and I am from Slovakia. Recently I developed a huge affection for old classic books and am trying to get through of many of them. Books definitely can make people smarter and I think that classics are one of the best choices for this.

Just yesterday I finished War and Peace. I must admit, it was quite challenging. I liked it, but the length was sometimes a little bit frustrating. Tonight I am planning to start Lady Chatterley's Lover so I am curious how I'm gonna like it.

(Is it necessary to mention that I am writing this instead of studying for a maths exam? Long live procrastination... Ok ok, I'm going now. Really.)

message 781: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Hi Simona! Welcome :)

I'm glad you decided to say hello instead of lurk. I just saw your comments in some of the challenge threads, and appreciated your contributions.

Huge wtg on W&P. Impressive ^5! (that means 'high-five')

Good luck on exam!

I'm both a work study for the math and physics department here as well as an undergraduate research assistant to one of the doctorate professors here. Basically I get up really early and go catch birds!
I'll read just about anything, but my preferences change with my mood. I love classics (well, most of them anyway), but when I need a break from them I can read biographies, science fiction, fantasy, steampunk, mystery, or anything I feel looks interesting and captivating.

John | 2 comments Ciao, my name is John a draftsman from near Portland, Or. Until about five years ago I was one of those people that never ever read any novels. Kurt Vonnegut changed that for me. Now I'm reading or listening to an audiobook every change I get. I'm behind the eight ball on the classics and feel almost a sense of duty to read them. Huge fan of Dickens, Austin, and Hemingway. I'm just looking for classics to fall in love with and people to talk about them with.
