Hello Amanda. I am so glad that you chose to join us in reading.

message 7002: by Jaena4 (new)

Jaena4 Beadling Hello, I'm Laura and I'm from Ohio. A few summers ago, I put out a FB message asking if any of my friends might be interesting in rereading Jane Eyre with me. I remember reading and liking it in high school, but had very little memory of the book itself. One of my old students said she was interested, and since then, we've had a reading partnership where we each take turns picking the next book we'll read and discuss together. While we don't pick all classics, we do read quite a few and I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed them! Some favorites, along with Jane Eyre, are Adam Bede, Girl of the Limberlost, Emma, and A Christmas Carol.

One book I have to mention is Hans Fallada's Every Man Dies Alone, which was my favorite book of 2020. I had never heard of it but my reading partner picked it. It was incredible. "Every Man Dies Alone or Alone in Berlin is a 1947 novel by German author Hans Fallada. It is based on the true story of a working-class husband and wife who, acting alone, became part of the German Resistance. Fallada's book was one of the first anti-Nazi novels to be published by a German after World War II." It is intense and fascinating!

Left to my own devices, I still mostly read sci fi and fantasy, memoirs, and non-fiction, so I'm hoping this group inspires me to keep pursuing classics! My semester just ended, so I should have a bit more time for reading in the next month or so! Any recommendations much appreciated!

Welcome to the group, Laura. It is always nice to have a reading buddy. This is a great group to help motivate you to read more classics. Enjoy.

I recommend if you have any interest to join in with our monthly group reads.

I am deeply inspired and thankful for reading your comment! I will be sure to follow you for further book recommendations, and to check out the books you mentioned. I am trying to get more into classic's and have heard a great deal about Jane Eyre. I think after Pride and Prejudice I shall have to read that next. Although I was questioning whether I wanted to read Sense and Sensibility. Have you read anything else, besides Emma, by Jane Austen?

Courtney (courtneyswrittenworld) Hi everyone! I'm Courtney. The extent to my reading of classics has pretty much only consisted of what was assigned when I was in school. I have a few on my shelves (given to me by my kindred-spirit and bookish grandmother), but I have yet to read them. I'm excited to meet others who have knowledge of the classics and are just as excited to read them with me. I'm really hoping to expand my classics horizon in 2021. Can't wait to connect with you all!

Patty (pattyowen) Hi I'm Patty and have fallen off the reading bandwagon in 2020 thanks to moving and well, life in 2020. I love Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Classics, Historical Fiction, and Gothic novels. My favorite book of all time is 1984 by Orwell. I figured this would be a great group to jump start my reading for 2021 and get back in the habit.

Janet (janetevans) | 15 comments Hi everyone,

My name is Janet and I live outside Philadelphia. I plan to hibernate this winter and work my way through some of the classics on my bookshelf that I’ve either read before and plan to re-read, or ones that I haven’t yet read.

I hope to participate in upcoming group reads when I can, and I’m crafting a bingo challenge at the moment, because challenges are fun and they help me work my way through my TBRs. While I don't always finish them, my intentions are good, especially at the beginning of a new year.

Kathy Tsoukalas (kathtsoukalas) | 4 comments Hi all, I am excited to be part of this group!

My name is Kathy T and I am a digital marketing professional as my day job. I am also a professional writer.

I have a ton of hobbies including reading, ballroom dancing, creating music (lately, vocals, percussion, and learning to play guitar), and learning languages. Right now I am learning Greek, but I also speak German.

Because of the pandemic, I have been writing a lot more. I decided to consciously step up my reading so that I could be a better writer. I want to read some of the classics I may have missed, and reread some of those that I may not have appreciated the first time around.

Gilbert Hi, I'm Gilbert, living in New Jersey. I'm a retired accountant who discovered classic English and French 18th and 19th century literature. Love these writers!
When I had first learned to read, Mom and Dad took me to the local library. I asked them: "What should I read?" Mom said: "Anything!".
Dad said: "everything!". I've been doing my best to accomplish these suggestions for over 65 years, but there's so much to read and not enough time.

jackie | 2 comments hi everyone! i’m jackie and i’m based in london.

started my good reads account recently so there’s nothing much on it yet. i was inspired to create this account after reading sally rooney’s conversation with friends, and felt the need to know everyone’s thought about it (i absolutely loved it myself).

in general, i love books about love, humanity, and troubled souls. i don’t really read crime or thrillers at all (with the sole exception of gone girl, which was absolutely phenomenal). do feel free to reach out if you feel we’d like similar books - would love to do some buddy reads together!

oh and my all time favourite classic is pride and prejudice :)

Victoria Foote-Blackman Greetings, Since I am currently not working have been able to read like never before. Love the 18th and 19th century classics: English, French--which I read in the original--and Russian--which I read in translation--are my favorites. Occasionally 20th and 21st century but am wary of so-called contemporary bestsellers. Now I have a question: How does this group work? I am delighted to discover Elizabeth Gaskell, and am about a third through Cranford, but how do we discuss this book since it's not clear to me whether we are supposed to have read all of it by January 1st, or just start it on the lst? Can someone explain? Many thanks, and happy and healthy new year to all bibliophiles.
