I am Maria. I am from Brazil and I have also lived in Europe for more than ten years.
I have always been an avid reader, being specially passionate about classics. At the moment I'm finding difficult to choose what to read next, so I thought that joining a group as this would be helpful and fun at the same time.
Really looking forward to the readings and to the discussions.xx

Over the last month, I have read The Book Thief and 1984, which were both absolutely amazing. Looking at reading War and Peace next and getting involved in the discussions !

Thanks Kathy! I've just had a look at the books for May and I've already read To Kill a Mockingbird and Hundred years of Solitude. They are both among my top favourite books ever, so I'll be glad to join the discussions.

Timothy Jenson (tljenson) | 1 comments Hi all my name is Tim Jenson. I love reading, but have been reading mostly science fiction, and non-fiction. I am getting older, and I thought this would be a good time to start reading the classics.

I work for a collection agency part time, and am going back to school, to study IT. I am forty-three years old. I love travel, photography, reading, discussing philosophy and politics. I am looking forward to reading some classics with you guys.

Veronica (veronicalynne4) | 3 comments Hi everyone. My name is Veronica from Alberta, Canada. I have always loved reading but had a bit of time off when I had kids. Now that the kids are a bit older (and love reading too) I am trying to get caught up on everything I have missed and start reading more classics.
I will try most books people recommend though I have a passion for horror and science fiction/fantasy.
I am hoping to either continue with my education or go back to work once the kids are in school full time. I love camping, reading, history....too many to mention. I look forward to reading with you all :)

Welcome Tim and welcome Veronica. Nice to have you in the group.

I too love science fiction Tim, but have learned to enjoy the classics with this group.

And Veronica, I too started reading more once the kids were older. Different things for different times.

Hope to see you both in the discussions

I vowed to focus on at least one classic a month starting in January so finding this group is such a bonus. Not always a good group forum member, I'm liking the low key approach. Glad to meet you all!

I have always loved the classics but have a hard time deciding which to read. I am so glad I am not the only one who had to take a break when I had children. It is not that I didn't want to read but they chase you everywhere and I was too tired to stay up at night. Now my oldest is 9 and the youngest is almost 4 and they love books so all I have to do is tell them it is time to relax and read and I can get some reading time :)

message 673: by [deleted user] (last edited May 01, 2014 02:40PM) (new)

Hi, I am attempting to find a Goodreads group, with a focus on Classics that is a good fit with my reading preferences, has a variety of choices and is well organized. (Sorry, I sound so picky, but it seems if a group is not well organized, then the participation level goes down.)

Would love to join in reading with this group in the near future but may wait until the June reading of Lolita. I did not realize To Kill a Mockingbird isn't available for Kindle yet. WOW!! I had just assumed it would be, until I checked Amazon today.

message 674: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Hi Lisa! Welcome :)

Yes, Mockingbird has not been available in ebook form before. The author, Harper Lee, just a few days ago, on her 88th birthday, announced that she would agree for the first time, to allow the book to be released in digital format. It surprised me as well!

message 675: by Chy (new)

Chy Parker | 1 comments I'm Chy, and I live in a border town in Southern California. I'm married and my pets are my kids for now. I'm so ashamed to admit this, but I hadn't picked up a book in three years before I discovered my local Target Book Club picks, which lead me to Good Reads. Now I can't stop! I love to read just about anything, from biographies to history to fiction. Some of my favorites are The Giver and The Auschwitz Volunteer, although I just finished reading Looking for Alaska by John Green and I fell in love with it. I'm looking forward to reading all these classics! To escape in a book must be one of the greatest feelings on Earth.

message 676: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Hi Chy! Welcome :)

No need to be embarassed. Different things for different times in our lives. I *LOVE* reading, but also stepped away for a number of years, busy with other things.

Two of your titles I've recently become aware of via Goodreads, and def want to read (The Giver, and Looking for Alaska). Now I'll have to check out your middle title too. I bet I'll want to read that one as well *grin*

Adrienne | 1 comments Hi I'm Adrienne. I'm from the Heart of England. Sadly I'm lacking in the classics department of my bookshelf. I'm going to do something abou that. Here seems like a good place to start.

I read a lot when motivated to do so. Some books read better in their analogue state whilst others in E format. There's science there, so I wont read classics on my kobo/kindle or Ipod. Well maybe a modern classic;)

message 685: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Hey Adrienne, welcome! Catching up on the Classics is what we're for, so you're in the right place!

I hope you don't think I'm stalking you (lol), but I clicked on your profile, and noticed you just joined a really interesting group, Guardian Newspaper 1000 Novels. I've seen that list referenced in another group, it has some great books. I clicked to join too, thought I'd lurk a bit and see what kind of books get chosen :).

In any case! Welcome! :D (heh)

Gaelen Greene | 1 comments Hi, I'm Gaelen Greene. Author of Er de Fin. A Political Suspense Thriller. It is an ebook - available at AMAZON.COM/KINDLE. It is a Revisionist History Art Movement Novel. De det er NATO. It is in English/Danish. I read Classic Literature for a hobby. ER DE FIN is similar to George Elliot's, The Mill on the Floss. Heavily, influenced by Charles Dickens; Great Expectations. Most of all it is like Count Leo Tolstoy's, War and Peace. I'd like you all to read it. I'll keep in touch, Gaelen Greene.

Desertorum Hi,
I´m Maria from Finland. I read all kinds of books from all kinds of genres. Lately I´ve been trying to add more classics to my reading list, so I think this group is perfect for me.
My main hobby is weightlifting (and knitting) and it takes lot of my free time but I try to read whenever I have time :)

Christine Harper Hello! I'm Christine from Florida. I'm so excited to find this group through goodreads! It's going to be so nice to chat about the books we read! My mother and I try to read the same things so we can discuss, but it will be nice to have some suggestions and commentary.
I am really into Classic British Literature or other British writing such as mysteries, etc. I love Colin Dexter for mysteries. I do venture out of England too, though:-) I would say my top favorite novels/writers are: anything by Colin Dexter, lots of stuff from Geraldine Brooks, Tale of Two cities, Power of One by Bryce Courtney, lots by Isabella Allenda, and more.
Happy Reading!

message 697: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Mills (nancyfaym) Hello, I'm Nancy ... Glad to find this group, I love books, especially the classics and books about science and math. I actually get paid to ride horses so I don't exactly overtax my brain while making a living. The other day I realized that I am 54 years old and there are many books I have not read, so I'd better get busy. As far as my favorite classics, I like Dickens, Faulkner, Forster, and Conrad...I am also a fan of Annie Proulx and Jane Smiley.

message 698: by Jane (new)

Jane De vries | 7 comments Couldn't get into Faulkner. Any suggestions?

message 699: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Mills (nancyfaym) He doesn't seem to make much of an effort to be readable! "The Reivers" is funny, well-written and alot easier to follow than Sound and Fury and Absalom Absalom! and some of the others. "As I Lay Dying" is weird but easy to read. One sentence in "The Bear" is 17 pages long, with stingy punctuation. Has even a die-hard Faulkner fan like myself almost beating my head against the wall.
I admit to "cheating" when I read The Sound and the Fury. I read a commentary I got at the library which explained what was going on. I think I would have been clueless otherwise.
I don't know why it's worth it ... but it is, to me, anyway.
Oh ... and the very best one I've read is a short story which was later incorporated into the novel, "The Hamlet," called "Spotted Horses." Some of the most beautiful prose on the planet, and a brand of humor unlike any other.

message 700: by Jane (new)

Jane De vries | 7 comments Thanks for the prompt reply. i lived in the South for 10 years and think i should have my "own' Southern author. There is always John Grisham!
