Have you ever read any of his Christmas stories?"

I've read "A Christmas Carol." I understand there's a collection of all Dickens' Christmas stories in one volume, but I don't recall the title.

Pink | 5491 comments Annie, Dicken’s The Cricket on the Hearth is our current group read for the December short story category. Feel free to join in if you wish, but no pressure!

message 5813: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello everybody. I live in Denmark and recently I had to accept an early retirement because of an illness, but that gives me plenty of time to read, which is why I have decided to expand my group memberships, and I really want to read more classics.
I like history, fiction, graphic novels, sci fi, fantasy, poetry (some) and som non-fiction too.
Hope to meet a lot of you in here.

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 48 comments Hi, I´m Johanne, another Danish person; from Copenhagen. I have been a semi-silent member for a couple of months, but I don´t think I ever introduced myself. I am a children´s librarian at a large public library, I have a master´s degree in children´s literature and have a side job as a reviewer supporting the Danish public libraries´ acqusition of children´s and YA books. I am generally a very eclectic reader, reading across many genres and formats, but because of my workrelated reading, a lot of what I read are new children´s and YA books. I therefore need an extra push to read some classics as well. So here I am :)

message 5815: by Brina (new)

Brina Hello, Aya and Johanne and all other new members. Catching up on classics is such a diverse group and encourages you to read books you would have never considered before. I hope you both find books you enjoy here and have fun in this group.

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 73 comments Hi, everyone! I'm sliding in right before the New Year and I found the group because Lagullande posted about some of the challenges in another group I am in, Reading with Style. I also have a number of friends in this huge group including a neighbor ----- hi, Jolene! I'm a retired high school librarian and I like to read anything and everything!
My main goal for 2019 is to read books I already own, so the challenges will help with that goal. I'm also interested in reading more classics by women, so that challenge fits right in. i've done some initial planning, but I see that I need to get solid plans made for the Old and New Challenge, so I'll see everyone around the group.

message 5825: by Diana (last edited Dec 23, 2018 08:09PM) (new)

Diana Crass (dianahastoomanybooks) Hi, I'm Diana and I live in California. I am excited to find this group on Goodreads.

I just requested Mrs. Dalloway from my public library for the January 2019 read. I am on a strict budget as I am returning back to school for graduate work in January and I also work full-time. I hopefully will be able to find books for this group either on my shelves, the public library or online.

I love multiple genres of fiction as well as some nonfiction.

message 5826: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome to the group Diana. I don’t buy books myself, but one of the good things about reading classics is they’re readily available for free, especially the older ones. Good luck with your graduate work :)

So glad that you have joined us Diana. As Pink said, one of the great things about older classics is that you can find many of them free online or at the library.

message 5829: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (kyleezer) Hi everybody! I am brand new here, and I'm excited to start off 2019 as a more active reader. Unlike many of you, I don't read nearly as much as I would like, but I am eager to start. I feel like this group might be a great way to do just that. I look forward to seeing what the next year holds for me and getting to know many of you through the discussion threads. Now, on to my first book of the year!

message 5830: by ALLEN (new)

ALLEN | 622 comments Welcome, Kyle! But I think lots of us aren't able to spend as much time reading as we'd like. What's your first book for 2019 going to be?

message 5831: by Kyle (last edited Dec 24, 2018 03:53PM) (new)

Kyle (kyleezer) Well, Allen, I may have been wording that in a way more favorable to me. What I really mean is that I haven't been reading almost at all lately, and I would really like to. So, this is my year to turn off the television and get back to it!

Choosing a first book is tough. I have been looking at several clubs and challenges, and I believe I have decided on Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections. It's one that I was always interested in reading, but never did.

message 5832: by Darren (new)

Darren (dazburns) | 2171 comments Welcome Kyle!
The Corrections is quite long - you could consider our short (116 pages!) group choice for January The Postman Always Rings Twice which would get you off to a flying start! ;o)
The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain

Welcome to the group Kyle. So glad that you have joined us in trying to read more. Hope you join us in some group reads and challenges.

The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen is on my list to read eventually. I will be interested to see how you like it.

message 5834: by ALLEN (last edited Dec 24, 2018 04:18PM) (new)

ALLEN | 622 comments Darren, that's a good point about The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain. it's short, will be discussed here, and is more clearly a classic than Franzen's writings, which are not nearly so old.

Welcome Kyle. I am glad you joined and hope that it is a fun experience for you being in the group. I was interested in your book pick The Corrections. I had not really looked carefully at it before. Thanks for drawing my attention to it. Looks like it will join my ever-growing To Be Read (TBR) list!

I think the best thing about this group is the wide range of new books I learn about here.

BAM doesn’t answer to her real name I read The Corrections many, many years ago. I’ll let y’all be excited about reading it.

message 5838: by Milena (new)

Milena (milenas) | 542 comments I joined the Classic Bingo challenge, but never introduced myself. My name is Milena, and I am from New York. Last year was my first year on Goodreads, and I did the Popsugar and a few other challenges. For someone who calls herself an avid reader, I don't read nearly enough classics. That's why I joined this group. Plus people in other groups on Goodreads have very nice things to say about this group.

message 5839: by Brina (new)

message 5844: by Abby (new)

Abby (wowlookacustomurl) Hi everyone! I'm Abby, I'm a sophomore in college; I'm majoring in conservation with a emphasis in restoration management. I was going to major in english but I changed my mind for various reasons. Just had my last english class this fall semester and realized that it was the last time I'm ever going to analyze books within an academic setting. Anyway I feel like I'm kinda gonna miss that. Even though I never participated in the class discussions that much I always enjoyed listening to others ideas. Looking forward to reading and discussing with everyone!

message 5847: by Tamas (new)

Tamas Hi everybody. I’m Tamas from overseas :-) from Zurich, Switzerland, with a Hungarian origin.

I’m sort of an omnivore when it comes to books. However I have observed myself recently having too many of today’s crime stories piling up on my shelves, so decided it’s time for some classics instead. As a starter, will pick up Sue’s 2019 Old-New challenge.

Besides books and work (an immunologist by occupation), I love triathlons, ice hockey, dogs, and some DIY around the house.

Glad to bump into this group of you nice people here!
