Hi Mandy--I just have to say my band directors all through school held and still hold many years later a very special place in my heart. It's such a special role! Here's to some beautiful background music for your baby-running-aftering, your fabulous hobbies, and of course your reading. Welcome!

This is a friendly and varied group. I hope you like it here!

Hi, Mandy -- Welcome! Interesting you are reading biographies of the U.S. Presidents. I have decided, starting next year, to read biographies of the presidents. Which biographers do you particularly enjoy reading? Currently reading American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House by Jon Meacham and enjoying it.

ALLEN -- I'm planning on reading biographies of the presidents for next year and appreciate your recommendation you gave Mandy for the Hitchcock book on Eisenhower. Thought I would read the biographies in the order of their presidencies -- do you think that's a good way to approach this challenge?

I commend you on your initiative, Elizabeth. Alas, I am too undisciplined for that approach. I have heard marvelous things about Ron Chernow's Alexander Hamilton, parts of which, I believe, formed the basis for Lin-Manual Miranda's musical of the same name.

When is your diploma or certificate due?
Hi Enxhi and welcome to the group. I'm looking forward to discussing and reading classics with you. We have just started our October group reads, hope you can join in one or more with us.

My certificate’s due in December, Allen. I can’t wait!
I’ll definitely try to join one of the October reads, Katy! It’s probably time for me to read Frankenstein.

Is it customary in your country for most people to be graduated from institutions of higher learning at the beginning of Winter, rather than the beginning of Summer as in Canada and the USA?

Welcome, Enxhi! And my comment is: You definitely need to read Frankenstein!! Way different (and better!) than all the movies!

I'm dying to know a couple of your favorite USA movies, whether "art house" or not. (BTW I like classic and noir movies, too.)

Well, I love Stanley Kubrick's movies, especially A Clockwork Orange and Paths of Glory. I'm also a huge fan of David Lynch, I'm obsessed with Twin Peaks, Mullholland Dr., Lost Highway and Eraserhead. And another one of my favorite movies is Titus directed by Julie Taymor. There are probably more, but those are the films that come to mind instantly. I'm not exactly sure whether it's appropriate to call those films art houses, it's just in our country we call every movie, that makes you think, an art house)
Unfortunately I haven't seen a lot of noir movies. Need to fix this)
Hi, I'm Anonymouse. I live in Kentucky and work in a public library.
Love classics, especially nineteenth century: Dickens, Austen, Eliot, Thackeray, Gaskell, and Trollope.
Would like to try some women authors I have never read before (Fanny Burney and Maria Edgeworth).
Would also like to read more nineteenth century American lit. Looking forward to joining in the House of the Seven Gables discussion.

I’d also recommend Frankenstein, for anyone that’s thinking of joining in. So different from what I expected.
I’m a big fan of Fanny Burney as well, I loved Evelina.
Thanks Pink and Jim!
@Pink, will rustle up a copy of Evelina. Thanks for the recommendation. 🐁

Yara - I'm a big Kubrick fan too - were you aware that Paths of Glory is a book? I wasn't!
oh, and The Killing (aka Clean Break)
I have both near the top of my TBR pile as we speak...

No I didn't know it either. Must read it then! What's your favorite Kubrick movie?

aaargh! you can't ask me that!
not Lolita or Eyes Wide Shut, but pretty much any of the others
probably The Shining, but I do have a soft spot for The Killing

Loved THE SHINING and have a special place in my heart for PATHS OF GLORY.
Severely disappointed with EYES WIDE SHUT, the American version of which added c.g.i. nudes to block out the other nudes.
Why can't we have honest pictures, too?
Y'all get dried out yet, Donut?

Welcome to the group. This is the place for reading classics with others.

Some of my TBR:s are A tale of two cities, The great Gatsby, The beautiful and damned and Great expectations. If you have any suggestions of books suitable for someone who is a beginner in reading classics and also is not a native speaker of english it would be much appreciated!
PS: I am new to goodreads so I hope I have not done anything wrong!

Hi, Paloma! I understand that some middle- and high-school students in the USA dislike reading CATCHER IN THE RYE, but when I read it many years ago I thought it was great! Welcome!

Love The Shining and Paths of Glory. And The Killing. And Spartacus! And Dr. Strangelove. And 2001. And Full Metal Jacket. So hard to choose just one...

Nice to meet you all !
I am Tanvi from India, I am 24 and recently started working.
I love to read and classics are my biggest guilty pleasure, other than that I love mythological and philosophical fictions
Hope to have lots of lively discussions here 😃

Hi Ashley. Glad you joined and hope you enjoy it. There are many good books on the book shelf to read, and the discussions really add a lot to my reading experience.
