Hi Katy, I'll mention that my work is such that there will be definite gaps in my posts. But hoping to get here as often as I can. Reading some Edgar Allen Poe right now and enjoying it. I suspect this is going to take a while and I might jump into others books as well. It's a book of his stories ( Tales of Mystery and Imagination) and I've just started Berenice.

W. (wmclough) Hi! I´ve just joined the club. Although I´m not very active in social media, I thought it might be productive and fun to read and learn from your points of view here.

message 5653: by ALLEN (new)

ALLEN | 622 comments Welcome, W! I myself have benefited greatly from sites like this, and the beauty is you aren't obliged to follow every single "assignment." It is best to say something if you'd like to say something, though -- folks at GR are rarely out to "snark" and in my experience, "Catching Up on Classics" is particularly friendly.

Anna Sobczak (reader222) | 3 comments Hello, I'm Anna and I am probably one of the youngest readers among the classical literature lovers. I'm fifteen and fell in love with old books when I first read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for school. Since then, I've read Jane Eyre, Huck Finn, To Kill A Mockingbird, Romeo and Juliet, Catcher in the Rye and of Mice and Men. I really love reading and am so eager to read more classics with you!!

Adriana Mejía Larco | 1 comments Hi, I'm Adriana and first of all sorry if my english is not that good, but it's my second language. I'm 20 years old and I'm from Peru. Right now I am an undergraduate in Secondary Education in Spanish and Literatura, so you will understand that the classics are very important in my life.

But with all the others type of book out there and with all my classes, I just left aside the classics so I hope this group will help me to get back on track :)

One of my absolute favorites is One Hundred Years of Solitude (Gabriel García Márquez), also really like The Metamorphosis (Kafka) and almost anything that Edgard Allan Poe wrote. Right now I am reading Blindness (Jose Saramago) and it's slowly becoming also one of my favorites.

message 5659: by Isabella (new)

Isabella (angelvault) | 2 comments Hello! I don't remember if I have already posted here or not but my name is Isabella, I'm seventeen, and I'm located in the states.

I recently got back into my old hobby of reading, so I am a bit behind on the things I've meant to read, but I am getting there. I am a romantic so I love romance, but only if it is done right. I also like when dark elements are thrown in, so the Brontës really do it for me.

It is nice to meet you all!

Sayo -bibliotequeish- (sspea) Hi,
My name is Sayo, I'm from Canada, I generally have 2-3 books on the go at one time, a general rule is that I like to have one classic in that mix. I am re reading some from high school, some I am reading for the first time. The last classic I read was the hunchback of Notre Dame, right now the classic I am reading is the invisible man.

Like you, I usually have 2-3 books going at the same time too. Never know what mood I'll be in when I sit down to read.

Welcome to the group.

Amy | 12 comments Hi! I'm Amy, from Georgia (the U.S. one). I've made several attempts over the years to follow through on an intention to start reading more classics and somehow it never works out. Some of my favorite books are classic children's books: Little Women, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A Little Princess, Anne of Green Gables and many others, including The Once and Future King - at least, the first part qualifies. Now I have an excuse to re-read that one. I look forward to reading with you and developing an appreciation for classics that are more "grown up!"

Mike (myerstyson) Greetings from Boston! I'm Mike and I just joined. I'm a voracious, if somewhat slow, reader. I'm looking forward to reading with you all here. About a decade or so ago the wife and I decided to start reading the classics. See what all the fuss was about. Wow. Wish I'd begun this in my 20's.

Pick and choose through Bloom's list, but now that I have a Goodreads account, thought I'd seek out some book groups, and found you guys. Looking forward to starting something new on 1 September. Should be done with Hot Water in time!

message 5673: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Michael, it sounds like you and your wife have had fun reading through the classics. I spent decades neglecting them too, but I'm making up for lost time now. I'm glad you're looking forward to joining us with some September reads, I hope there's something you like the look of :)

Brenda (aka Grandma) | 9 comments Hi everyone. I'm Brenda, and in the U.S. My favorite genre is science fiction, but I like to mix it up. I looked around a little at your discussions and this seems like a friendly group. I've read at least 2 of your current group reads and I fall in the camp that loved The Remains of the Day, but it's also good to see different reactions accepted. I haven't read a lot of classics and I look forward to reading some more with you.

Welcome, Grandma Brenda! I have THE REMAINS OF THE DAY within view,
but haven't read it yet. It is indeed a very nice group here.

ALLEN | 622 comments . . . SO nice, in fact, that I'm going to intrude here and say I am happy I finally reviewed the NEW YORKER's box of 100 cover postcards, and was lucky enough to find some images to illustrate the kind of thing that magazine has run over the years.

If you're interested, check it out before some putative rihgts-holder complains?

Yea! A fellow Remains of the Day fan! One of my very favorites -- I can't believe it when people don't care for it, but they are definitely out there.
Welcome, Grandma Brenda! Enjoy this group and have fun reading classics :)

message 5687: by Tina (last edited Sep 08, 2018 01:26PM) (new)

Tina (tinabeshers) Hello everyone-
My name is Tina, and I'm coming to you from Pensacola, Florida. I Have challenged my self to read more "classical" works (whatever that means). I found this group and thought it would be great fun. Plus I thought it would encourage me to read more. I can't wait to dive in.

Right now, I'm really interested in/fascinated by literature from the Victorian Era, especially as it relates to science fiction. I am intrigued by how new technology influences both the thrill of novelty and the fear of change, and I really like seeing this played out in works of fiction.

My most recent read is "The Island of Dr. Moreau" by H.G. Wells which I find very relevant today.

I look forward to reading more classics in the remainder of the year.

I like to read the classics but do enjoy almost every other genre (except for maybe Sci-Fi) and am always looking for suggestions. I was really intrigued by the Bingo and challenges that you offer and am looking forward to becoming more involved next year. Thank all of you for providing such a wonderful forum for avid readers.

su (toanightingale) Hi everyone!! I'm Yağmur and I'm a 20-year-old college student from Turkey. My major is English Education but I am hoping to continue my studies in English Literature. I love reading and reading classics in particular (though I can't claim to have read many) so when I discovered this group, I thought it was ideal for me!! My favorite genres are classics, fantasy, historical fiction and gothic fiction. I can't wait to join monthly reads and discussions!

message 5698: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Lane (mandylane) Hi friends! I'm Mandy from Florida. I was a bookish girl in my youth and throughout college, but upon starting my career 5 years ago, I have totally let the ball drop. I'm excited to finally have gotten onto GR and found this group! You all inspire me to dedicate more time to reading great works.

I enjoy historical works, fiction or otherwise, and I'm a little obsessed at the moment with biographies of former presidents. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I'm a YA fantasy lover, and I do adore classic literature.

I'm a new first-time mom, and I'm loving the time I can spend at home with my daughter. I enjoy reading to and playing with her. She's just begun crawling, and we are all over the house most days. I am also energized by nature and times of solitude, so I do a good deal of hiking, kayaking and primitive camping. I want so badly to thru-hike the AT! Gardening, homesteading, micro farming, and writing are all passions.

And I would be remiss if I left out that pre-baby I was a band director and my husband is one as well, so wind band and orchestral compositions can be heard in our house 365 days of the year.

So glad to be here and looking forward to getting to know everyone more!
