Jackelyn (wildrose2005) Hello! I'm Jackelyn. I'm married, no kids yet. I'm almost finished with my Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education English. I love classic literature, but haven't read nearly as much as I would like. I've always wanted to join a book club, but could never find one that fit me or my schedule. I'm so happy to have found this group. Happy reading!

Zarina | 4 comments Hey everybody! I'm Zarina from Puerto Rico, currently living in Missouri for college after the big mess that Hurricane Maria left. I enjoy reading classic literature, dystopias, and any with feminist themes. Even more so when they mix, like Brave New World. Jane Eyre is my most favorite book, and I hope we get to read and discuss it in this group in the near future. I'm so excited to have joined in time to reread A Room of One's Own. I find it to be a great read, way ahead of its time.

Aside from being a total book nerd, I am a Chemical Engineering student, hoping to one day work for NASA and be the first Puerto Rican female mission controller.

message 5265: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Hi Zarina, welcome to the group! I'm a fan of Brave New World and Jane Eyre too. We have read both as a group before, but we do have rereads here, so I expect Jane Eyre will be picked again in the future. Feel free to nominate it yourself in our revisit the shelf category, which is still open for suggestions until the 14th. In the meantime, here's the threads for our previous Jane Eyre discussion if you'd like to take a look, or add your own thoughts. https://www.goodreads.com/group/comme...

Oh and good luck with your studies. Sounds like you have a great goal to one day work for NASA!

Fairly new to Goodreads, mostly because I only recently started reading after a long time.

Never read a lot of the classics. Mostly read contemporary novels.

Looking to "catch up on classics"!!! :)

message 5276: by Don (new)

Don Trowden (dontrowden) | 1 comments Hi and thanks for creating this great group. My name is Caleb Mason (although my pen name is Don Trowden—get the joke?) and I love reading and studying great works of fiction. I was an English major back in the roaring ‘70s, worked in bookstores, then book publishing, before heading off into the early days of tech.

Works of fiction I have read many times and essentially studied include all of Proust, Durrell’s Alexandria Quartet, Jane Austen, Winesburg Ohio, and Tender is the Night. There are many others but these are ones I think about a good deal.

I enjoy the immense challenge of creating my own fiction and discovering my own voice, which took many years. My voice has been described as humor masking pain and I think that is correct. I can find humor in the funeral parlor, in the death of loved ones, in the uncalled-for betrayals by loved ones. In the end, we all ideally can laugh through our tears.

Hi everyone! My name is Gary. I live in New Hampshire. I have been in the group for a while, and have been keeping up with quite a few reads. The titles that are chosen are all superb.

I've been recovering from a couple fusion surgeries on my back and neck for the last 18 months, the group has helped me in choosing sometime reads over this time.

I think I'm able to start being a more active member.

Before I had my surgeries one of my activities was mountain climbing here in beautiful NH. But that activity is in the past now, but simple walks will be good when I can.

But this off time gives me some quality time to read, and discover writers that are new to me. Ive become a reader of modernist writers, but I go in for a variety which my library shows,

I look forward to a couple reads coming up; Catcher in the Rye (which I read about once a year) and one by Calvino I've wanted to read for a long time.

Glad to be more actively involved.
Cheers!

Gary

message 5292: by Luke (new)

Luke (korrick) Hello all. I should've done this a while back, but I was so caught up in making plans for this group's challenges that it slipped my mind. Anyway, my name is Aubrey, I'm an aspiring professor in literature, and I'm invested in reading good lit that veers off the beaten path of what is customarily considered 'good' lit. As I myself moderate the 500 Great Books by Women group, I was intrigued by this group's Quest for Women Authors challenge, and I hope to read lots of underread classics while participating in it.

Brenda Klaassen (librarymom23) It is snowing here in Iowa this morning and my friend Luffy directed me to this group. I have been wanting to read a few more classics because I am a Public Librarian and this is where I am lacking in knowledge. I am a mother of two teenage boys so I find myself waiting around for them quite often. My husband does not enjoy reading at all. I try to crochet or color for a change of pace. When my friends want to or the day is beautiful outside, I enjoy walking to just enjoy the nature or catch up with a friend. Looking forward to hearing about all of your adventures and suggestions.
