Welcome to the group Melissa. What a great list of books -- I've read and loved most of them. You will fit right into this group. I'm excited to talk books with you.

- Jared - ₪ Book Nerd ₪ (jared_w) | 31 comments Hello Melissa from Japan! ;)

1984 and Flowers for Algernon are some of my favorites too.

If you liked those comedic works then you may enjoy Don Quixote though it is a bit of a long read. I personally enjoyed it.

Welcome to the group!

Brina Welcome, Melissa, Taylor and anyone I may have missed. It's been a busy month so I haven't been around as much as I'd like. This is a wonderful group for reading classics so I hope you all enjoy. Same to you Jared as I never welcomed you either :)

Mel | 10 comments Thank you all for your warm welcomes! Jared, I went and added Don Quixote to my ever-expanding to-read list.
A big thank you to all the mods in particular for cultivating such a well-run group. Everything is so organized and nicely explained that it's easy for newcomers like myself to dive in. It's also nice having a few different books being read at once from which to choose. :)

Donna (dfree46) Hi, I’m Donna Freeman from Longview, Texas. Your group is just what I have been looking for😀. I have started reading the classics recently on my own but would love to have a little more structure about what to choose and possibly a start and finish date to spur me on. Your group sounds just the ticket for me. I read voraciously and have many interests, but the classics are my first love. I recently joined the Goodreads club “Around the Year in 52 Books”. I didn’t join it until September of this year and when I filed my 2017 reads into their challenge, I am right on schedule to finish the challenge with them, so that is how much I love to read. I was totally surprised that I had read that many books in 2017 and could finish with the group😬.
I also am in the Stephen King Book Club and we are starting completely over reading all of his books in order (one per month) starting with “CARRIE”.
So, I would love to be in the segment of your group which selects a classic with a timeline so I don’t have to keep putting off “ANNA KARENINA“ because I’m scared...LOL Also, I have never read “HARRY POTTER” but plan to at some point so don’t know if that is considered classics.
Anyway thank you for allowing me to join your wonderful group and I would welcome suggestions on which part of your group that you all think would fit my needs mentioned above.
Will we be reading one book per week or one per month?
Do you have a challenge set up already for 2018?
Sorry for being long-winded. I am excited to be here.
Get that whip out and make me read “ANNA KARENINA” some time along the way😅. LOL! THANKS EVERYBODY!

Welcome to the group Donna. I'm so glad that you have found us and that we were what you had looked for.

We have 4 monthly book reads and 1 quarterly longer read. So you will have plenty of books to choose to join in the discussion.

Challenges will start going up in December -- we have several, so there should be at least one that interests you! Welcome.

Donna (dfree46) When you say “We have 4 monthly book reads and 1 quarterly long read”. Does that mean we will be reading 4 per week?
Sorry for being a dunce! Or is it a challenge kind of thing? For instance here is my list on the other club I was talking about. In it, you just fill in your reads but you can read them in any order. (SEE BELOW). In the Classics I would like to have someone telling me this is the selection for the week or month so I can be more structured and tackle some that I have been putting off because they intimidate me. LOL!

We do have a couple of challenges but the 4 monthly book reads are particular books we discuss. It's akin to an online book club. You're welcome to join in on as many or as few of these discussions as you like.

There's some more details here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Right now, we're discussing The Jungle Book, The Haunting of Hill House, Fahrenheit 451, and The Call of Cthulhu for our monthly reads and The Woman in White for our quarterly read.

ShanDizzy (sdizzy) Hello, I'm Shannon from Florida USA and an unashamed bibliophile. Thanks for having me. I love reading the classics! I just finished the epic adventure The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas . I'm THAT person who reads constantly, whenever I'm not doing adult things and participating in my life. LOL. I mainly read fiction since I live reality. I also frequently read British Mysteries, spy novels, cerebral thrillers, other mysteries (not macabre ones), and interesting life stories. In this group, I look forward to revisiting the classics and being introduced to ones unknown to me. Thanks

message 5022: by Peggy (new)

Peggy Hi all! Just found this group and looking forward to being involved in the discussions. I love reading the "classics," and like to include in that list novels written outside the Western canon that are considered classics within their own cultural context.
I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Born in Ohio and have lived in New York, Seattle, Kansas and, finally, here. Retired 10 weeks ago and have one adult son in LA. I'm discovering how much reading one can do when there is no 9-5 (or in my case, often 50-60 hour work weeks!).
I've been reading classics in the traditional sense since the age of 12 or 13, although if you throw in children's classics such as Little Women or The Secret Garden I'd have to move that back to eight or nine!
I'm looking forward to reDing backward through the intros!

Izunia | 13 comments Hi! My name is Iza. I've in the group for a while now (a long while), but I never got to introduce myself. I'm far more of reader than of a writer.
I read the discussions and really enjoy them, but somehow I never managed to take part in them, even though I have some comments. I blame my shyness for that. But it's a moment to change it!
I read mainly fiction. My favourite book is The Master and Margarita, my favourite authors are Erich Maria Remarque and Alice Munro.
