ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments Yay, Leslie!! Even if you are done with NR now, it was great to read which books you've read and enjoyed. It's neat to see who is reading which series and who likes which series or stand-alone.

Tea, I really like the In Death series, too. I have a few gripes about the series at the moment: Not enough Mavis and not enough humor like she used to put in them. The earlier books were always fun with the Mavis scenes and other little injections of humor that I feel have been lacking in the past 5 or 6 books. I am starting Calculated in Death (In Death, #36) by J.D. Robb sometime this month and I hope it's good.

The only Gallagher book I'm not sure I'll enjoy this time around is the first one. Jewels of the Sun (Gallaghers of Ardmore / Irish Trilogy, #1) by Nora Roberts I found Jude to be kind of a Mary Sue, from what I recall. Another one who ran away from an abusive spouse and she's just so angelic and sweet and perfect..blech. Mind you, this is all based on a really spotty memory of the book and character, LOL! I could be way off base here. I recall enjoying books 2 and 3 much more, though.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments Stand-alones: I love Honest Illusions, The Reef, Hidden Riches, and a few other of her oxymoronic titles. I would have to look over them all to recall which is which. I'd forgotten about Three Fates, until Tea mentioned it. I remember liking it but that's all. Hm, maybe I'll re-read it sometime.

As I said I just started it. I got to book 7. I'm actually ashamed to admit that only reason I started it is because audiobook was available in library and I wanted to listen to something while working. :D After first, I got all others until job was done. Interesting. I find Mavis little irritating, but I like Peabody. :D

Aren't most of them nice, sweet, perfect with something terrible in their past? :D And then perfect (beautiful, rich, successful,...) guy comes along and shows her what real love is? Or I'm too much under impression of last read books? :D

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments Oh whoops, I forgot you said you just started the series, Tea! Sorry if I spoiled anything for you. I've been reading it for so long I forget that people who are just starting it don't know everything that happens, heh.

I love Peabody!

Well, some of the heroines are strong and feisty, which I suppose is another trope of sorts, especially when it comes to those Irish redheads. The sweet, angelic ones bug me the most, lol.

Don't worry about spoiling. As long as you don't tell me who the killer is, you can spoil all you want :D

I'm kinda getting tired of all construction working in her books. Don't they have anything else to do?

Chris (cdavies1951) | 189 comments No Nora Roberts today, but I did finish a JD Robb (Holiday in Death) just to keep the spirit :-)

message 107: by Vi (new)

Vi After my last post, I finished up Sanctuary by Nora Roberts , River's End by Nora Roberts & Black Hills by Nora Roberts .

Sanctuary was just ok. Not that great. River's End was good but the suspense part was totally unbelievable. Especially the ending. I mean, if you are a movie star, then you'd have security right? Otherwise anybody can come in to the house. So, if you have security (machine or human), then there'd be some trail on who came in. The romance part was good.

Black Hills is the one I like most in her recent releases. It deals with Animal Refuge and that's something I've always been interested in. This was a re-read.

So, reading these 3 back-to-back, my impressions:

1. From all the 5 books (?) I've read, NR seems to have a standard h portion - they're all lanky, lean. None of them seems to be overweight or anything or even any other body weight. To be fair, she doesn't really concentrate on the physical but still it's irritating when all the h are looking the same. I kept think Eve Dallas too.

2. NR seems to like the friends-to-lovers trope with little twist. They'd have known each other right from kids. When they fall in love and they'd realize they loved each other all their life. Except for Carnal Innocence, ALL of them had the same trope. GAH!

I have Birthright by Nora Roberts that I'll get to. I'm not really in the mood for her trilogies or straight contemp. RS is working better for me now.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments Great post, Vi! thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I remember disliking Sanctuary when I read it back when it was released. Can't remember why now but I think I was just bored with it. I read River's End but I can't remember a thing about it now. I still haven't read Black Hills.

Hah, you're right about the two formulas you mentioned! I was just thinking the other day about how many romances she has between childhood friends/sweethearts.

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) Great thoughts, Vi and I agree with you. But the writers I like best do seem to have similar characters in their books - which is why I like them. JAK comes to mind.

I remember liking Black Hills - I'm pretty sure I read that one a while ago. But I really loved The Searcher (sorry my GR has gone wonky this morning.) But very same storyline as you were describing. And I do like her RS but I admit to a weakness for the Bride Quartet that she wrote. Silly books but so much fun!

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 384 comments I've finished with Northern Lights by Nora Roberts

It's still fun read. Especially reading about all that snow in this heat :D

That's four NR books for me this round.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments Ack, tomorrow is the 8th! I'm totally failing this, LOL. Took me forever to finish the book I just read because my work schedule for the past few days has been ugh... I didn't really know what my schedule would be like when I planned this little readathon, either.

Well, I may not have done well but it was a lot of fun to see what everyone else read and had to say about their choices and about NR in general!

message 112: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) This was a great short challenge. I loved it. We should do more like this. I loved seeing what everyone was reading and not waiting an entire month.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments I agree, Leslie! Any ideas for another? I'll think about some ideas, too.

message 114: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) Someone with a big backlist. I love discovering oldies but goodies!

message 115: by Vi (new)

Vi I loved NR for that reason - she had HUGE back list that I spent a month or so just reading her (when I first discovered her). No other author has come close since then. I have to think of more author - like Lisa Kleypas, Amanda Quick (with all her alter-egos).

But I agree - the short challenge was so much fun.

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 384 comments ❀ Oo ❀ wrote: "What authors do you find similar to Norah that you also like?"

Somehow I always put Nora Roberts and Sandra Brown in same basket. :D I like her romantic suspense novels more than romance. She also has quite backlist.
Maybe Jayne Ann Krentz but I read mostly her Amanda Quick books.

message 117: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) JAK is the one that immediately comes to mind. I've been doing a challenge/Buddy Read for quite a while now with her books. She also has an enormous backlist. I love everything she writes.
I've only read one Sandra Brown so I can't speak to her books at all.

message 118: by Vi (new)

Vi Short one because I have to go now.

As Tea and Leslie said, JAK/Amanda Quick comes to mind. So does Karen Robards mainly because she is shelved near NR (ROB) so I've read most of hers too. I've just started Sandra Brown (reading my third now) and SB is more gritty RS than NR, I feel. The characters are more despicable than what NR has written so far.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments Karen Robards is on my 'authors to check out' radar. I just started reading the Arcane Society series by Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick/Jayne Castle.

I'd be up for a readathon of any of these authors: Karen, Jayne or Sandra! What about Linda Howard? I haven't read her yet but she writes romantic suspense, too.

message 120: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) I'm already doing a JAK/AQ/JC challenge though I'm always happy to read more of her books! And enjoy the Arcane Society series, Ilovebakedgoods! I've read them all at least twice and several of them more than that. I'm not very rational about her books. I just love them.

I would love to do Sandra Brown - she interests me more than Karen Robards.
Elizabeth Lowell is another one that's a possibility.
