I would have to say that Poisonwood Bible was my least fave of hers, a powerful read but depressing. I loved Prodigal Summer, also Flight Behaviour, Bean Trees, Pigs in Heaven and Animal Dreams. Plan to reread The Lacuna as I wasn't so fussed but want to give it another chance. Also enjoyed her essays, especially High Tide in Tucson and Small Wonder. Brenda, if you were going to read anything of hers, start with Prodigal Summer. I would love to know what you think of that one.

Thanks Marianne. We had to read PB for bookclub so I wouldn't have chosen it otherwise. Thanks for the rec on Prodigal Summer, I'll check the blurb out:)
I really loved Flight Behaviour and now having read Prodigal Summer, I could see how far she's come as a writer! I do think Flight Behaviour is a great read and instant classic!
Currently reading "The Way of Kings" by Brandon Sanderson. After which I have several more fantasy books lined up for reading.So far I'm enjoying it. Although the interlude chapters confused me a bit since I have no idea why those characters were introduced (a fisher, and a brother of one of the characters. However he's back at home, preparing crabs and I'm just wondering....why am I reading this? I'll reserve judgement. Perhaps these two characters will tie up with the main story eventually?).
Only one of the interlude characters made sense, which was the assassin (he was introduced pretty early on and then kind of disappeared for a while).
Anyone else reading any fantasy?

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
just finished reading the third jack reacher book, tripwire. It was a little predictable and I found that disappointing for a thriller. I hope the next book moves away from the general theme of picking up a woman, solving the crime with her, bedding her, girl gets taken hostage, reacher saves the day. It's getting old fast!

They do change a bit as you get further into the series.. I love them too!

I tired of it and his character most of all,after a while, but the first two books are my favourites, and I would gladly reread them.

Yes but despite the similar plot lines I have not tired of it and have read the whole series right up to date! I even went to see the movie although Tom Cruise had no resemblance to Jack Reacher whatsoever.

The Woman Before Me by Ruth Dugdall - wow, what a good book, quite disturbing, but very well written - highly recommended.
Just finished The Last Runaway which I thoroughly enjoyed. About a quarter of the way through Villette which is brilliant so far.
Im reading Sepulchre and its very good so far. In year 8-9 i learnt some french with is good because some of the monologue in the book is french and its very fun to find out that i know what the words mean. I also recomend reading Labyrinth It is very well writen and has an awesome ending! :)

I have just started reading The Broken Shore by Peter Temple. I am struggling with his writing style and the slang - I don't know how anyone who is not Australian would be able to understand what is going on. Has anyone else read his work? What did you think?

I'm my opinion it's a brilliant book, slow to start off with but fast, violent and gripping ending.

At first I wanted to stop reading it but I persisted and found it a fantastic read.
Just read Garth Nix's Lirael. I like fantasy at times and have been meaning to read him for ages and it never happened, now I have read one of his and enjoyed it. This series are YA I discovered but it was still a good read and I have bought Abhorsen now, book three in that series.Lirael

I finished The Broken Shore - I wish goodreads allowed 1/2 stars, whilst I enjoyed this book, I didn't enjoy it enough to give it 4 stars, but think it was better than 3 stars. I really struggled with his writing style and lack of explanation about the main character, I was beginning to think it was part of a series and I was starting in the middle and should have had a lot of prior knowledge. I found myself wondering who various characters were, but maybe I am just easily confused :)I will probably read another of his books, can anyone recommend which one I should tackle?
I am trying to get Watching the Clock finished for tomorrow so I can get stuck into my list of twelve for the Autumn challenge!

I thought so. I sometimes care for young children on the autism spectrum and it is always of concern how they will cope with adult life. The main character, Don, was obviously high functioning but you could see how it prevented him from having a "normal" life. I liked the way the author used humour in a gentle way to show how Don survived. I really enjoyed this book on all levels.
