Love You More by Lisa Gardner. Gosh she writes good books. I was reading on the train to Sydney today and nearly missed my stop at Wynyard because I was so engrossed in the story!

message 4603: by Mark (new)

Mark I'm reading Historia von D. Johann Fausten in connection with a challenge, The Eyre Affair in connection with its presence on my kindle in the wake of a daily special, and Delirium for no reason it is possible logically to discern.

I really urgently want to read this, but I could not bring myself to part with $14.99, so I will have to wait for some used copies to filter back through amazon. It will probably only serve to exacerbate my apoplexy about American corporatocracy, in any case, though I gather Goldacre is British.

Michele Just started Dark Summit: The True Story of Everest's Most Controversial Season by Nick Heil.

I have just finished Under the Dome by Stephen King, which I enjoyed but not as much as I enjoyed The Stand and I also just finished Come Back to Me by Sara Foster, which was ok, but I don't think I would recommend it.

What do you think of The Eyre Affair. I have enjoyed everything I have read by Jasper Fforde so far and I would very much like a dodo as a pet.

Hi, Phrynne. I think it's a bit Douglas Adams manqué, but still immensely clever, and I enjoy the literary allusions. And yes, I'd love to have a pet dodo, too. Let me know if you find a distributor of mostly-extinct animals. :)

Any author who can name a character Paige Turner is okay with me!
As for the dodo my dog probably wouldn't like it.

Yes, love the wordplay! I think your dog needs to adopt a more tolerant attitude. What if you were to adopt a chimera, a veliciraptor and a kraken? I'm certain that extinct and mythological creatures are getting short shrift in our shelters, and that good homes need to be found for them. :)

Velociraptors and Krakens are just too big for my house. Sorry. Could probably manage a chimera if it was appropriately mixed. Maybe the head of a house cat and the body of a Dik Dik. Hey - I read Days of Blood & Starlight. I know all about chimeras!

Perhaps you could get the miniature breed of velociraptor. I'd get kraken on that as soon as possible. :) I'm afraid I haven't read Days of Blood and Starlight, though it sounds a bit like a vampire novel that takes place in a planetarium. :) Cait's review (the first one listed) is hilarious.

I don't know how serious I am, but I'm abashed to report that I *am* actually reading it. As YA dystopian fiction goes, it's not too execrable; the prose, at least, is implausibly well-crafted for works in that genre, and the storyline is reasonably engaging. Perhaps I'll give Days of Blood and Starlight a try, since you recommend it.

Actually I am a great believer in reading anything as long as the author knows how to put an intelligent sentence together. The trouble with YA fiction is that that is not often the case. So on your recommendation I will give Delirium a try.
Have you read Wool. I keep seeing it mentioned all over the place and don't know whether to try it or not.

Actually, I think it's a problem with virtually all contemporary fiction that the authors have only a rudimentary command of sentence structure. :) We do have the same bête noire in that respect, though. :) I haven't read Wool, nor have I even heard of it, but I'll hasten to have a look at the review page.

Dale Harcombe | 6890 comments I'm inclined to think sometimes it is a matter too of what else we have read recently. I read .One Breath Awayand Fontanelle: A Collection Of Poems, both of which which I really enjoyed, and now am struggling to get into The Speed of Light.Even though I can see it is well written it is not involving me and feels like a chore to pick it up. Suspect it is a case of bad timing more than anything

Thanks Brenda. I saw that but in the end I went for the paper edition due out in five days time. Cost a bit more but my husband will probably read it too and he still prefers real books! I guess it must be good because it gets an awful lot of five star ratings.

message 4624: by Mark (last edited Jan 11, 2013 11:20PM) (new)

Mark Phrynne (and Brenda), I'd recommend having a look at the (very few) one-star reviews and the comments appended thereto, including those of the author. I decided not to buy it because I have a problem with multiple, serial protagonists (I have a need to identify with one, continuous world view), but most of the criticism involves Howey's use of excruciatingly tedious, interminable descriptive passages. Of course, there are an (implausibly) huge number of deliriously ecstatic, 5-star reviews, so even assuming most of them to have been ginned up, there must be *something* to the story, and it was easy to discern from the author's comments that he writes exceedingly well. Thanks, in any case, for the suggestion: I'd probably have bought it had it not been for the matter of shifting protagonists, and you may very well enjoy it immensely if you're not afflicted with my idiosyncratic intolerance of that single feature of the book. It's worth noting that if you buy the version here, http://www.amazon.com/Wool-Omnibus-Ed... , you can obtain the entire Audible narration for only $1.99.

Not for us Aussies Mark:( For some reason there's quite a large number of ebooks from Amazon unavailable for Australian download!

But thanks...I was going to get it to try it out:(

message 4627: by Mark (new)

Mark Sorry, Brenda! Seems to be the same sort of problem that perennially exasperates me with amazon.fr -- the "not-available-in-your-country" blue screen of death. I'd assumed, somehow, that Aussies buying books from amazon.com were exempt, but perhaps you're only precluded from downloading freebies. This division of the world into impenetrable partitions reminiscent of the Cold War for idiotic reasons of arcane international copyright law (or just because ebook sellers are inherently deranged) really needs to be stopped.
