Michael wrote: "I just finished The Happiest Refugee: A Memoir wich was a wonderful read. I will post a review after work and will be reading A Million Suns for the September challenge next. :)"Isn't reading Across the Universe sort of a prerequisite for that?

I have been thinking about reading Across the Universe. Is it good? The reviews make it sound very young adult but that's okay as long as the writing is good.

I haven't actually read it, but was, like you, tempted by the reviews. I guess we'll have to wait for Michael's opinion, though I'm assuming he wouldn't be slating the second book for a read if he hadn't enjoyed the first.

Michael wrote: "I enjoyed it Phrynne. Considering the whole story is based on a spaceship and it didn't have the usual elements of YA and sci fi it worked really well. :)"
Sounds good to me. I love sci fi. I will give it a go.

Currently, I am reading The Dawn Stag by Jules Watson, and i'm having a terrible time at it. I just find that I dont care about any of the characters, the main couple's relationship irks me and I feel like the ending is a forgone conclusion, however, my life has sort of cracked open like a cheap piniata that's been whacked by a circus strong msn holding a metal baseball bat, and the last time that happened I started hating the book I was reading. So, I dont know whether I dislike the book because it deserves it or i'm just projecting my negative feelings onto it - and I dont want to change books incase I end up polluting the next one as well... Any how, sorry about the rant

That can happen. Sometimes you are just not in the right space for a particular book. Another time it may well be a different story.

Good luck Sharnie..maybe you should just put it to one side, and read something light and fluffy, it might help!

Yeah it was one of those novels where you get completely absorbed by the story. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves stories!
I'm currently reading 12: A Novel About the End of the Mayan Calendar by Jeffrey Marcus Oshins as the author has kindly given me a copy. I really like it so far.

I'm about to start Night Blind by Michael W. Sherer...an arc from the author with publication not until 23/10.

I just finished The Tower Mill by James Moloney ( I won a copy of on firstreads). I loved it .. Particularly good if you have a bit of a knowledge of the Brisbane area and Queensland state politics in the 70's and 80's. This is his first novel for adult readers and I would definitely read more of this author.

That Goodreads group was interesting Brenda. I went to hear Tess Gerritson speak not long ago and it was really interesting to hear her views about what she has written. She was very entertaining too!

I'm reading Hilary Burden's "A Story of Seven Summers" which is set in Tassie and is a true story. Great escapism and if you are into cooking, you will love the recipes at the end of each chapter.

Not so much cynical as cranky in virtue of having once had actually to read and lecture on the Epic of Gilgamesh. (I'm not a sumerologist or a lit. prof., nor do I play one on television, so it's a long story, but anyway, I'm now allergic to snakes of life and people named "Enkidu.")
