Recently finished River God: A Novel of Ancient Egypt, Beyond Fear and A Christmas Carol which completes my summer challenge and moves me further along with the 2012 challenge. Am about to start The Spell of Rosette for February, but also have a couple of books from the library I want to read.

About to start Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.I've tried reading this before, but didn't get into it that much. I thought I'd just try it again, and force myself through it. I usually can't handle books that use such an old vernacular (same reason I gave up on Wuthering Heights) but I'll try because I've heard it's a really good book and very relatable.
Brenda wrote: "Little Women...good luck with it Brittany..I hope you enjoy it this time:)"So far I'm liking it more the second time around, so I'm thinking this one will stick and I won't just give up again haha
I finished Room by Emma Donoghue a couple of days ago...it was brilliant...review here http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Highly recommended!

Brittany wrote: "Maggie wrote: "Recently finished River God: A Novel of Ancient Egypt, Beyond Fear and A Christmas Carol which completes my summer challenge and moves me fu..."Initially not so much but soon the story grabbed my attention. Thought the characterisations were a bit poor. But I'll read the second one in the series and see what I think - it's set in modern times. It was my first Wilbur Smith book - is he usually ok with character development?

Thanks Mish...it's a very thought provoking book!

Maggie wrote: "Brittany wrote: "Maggie wrote: "Recently finished River God: A Novel of Ancient Egypt, Beyond Fear and A Christmas Carol which completes my summer challeng..."I have all of Wilbur Smith's books, and I love them. The only ones I'm truly disappointed in are the most recent ones, because the characters are more 2 dimensional than any of his other books. But the Seventh Scroll is actually one of my favourite WS books - please let me know what you think when you've read it :-)
I just finished The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides. I wanted to like the book so bad, unfortunately couldn't get past the obvious flaws. Needless to say it was a disappoinment! I only gave it two stars (very rare of me). Here's my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...But I want to give Eugenides as a writer a chance, and will be reading his previous work, which won the Pulitzer Prize, Middlesex

Laurel, this is thread is for what people are actually reading not peoples stories they have personally writen, please use your spotlight area to highlight the stories you've writen. I'll keep this post up but next will be removed. Thanks.
CelesteStarted this one today. I have 3 new V.C Andrews books to smash out. I finish them ridiculously fast.
Maggie wrote: "Brittany wrote: "Maggie wrote: "Recently finished River God: A Novel of Ancient Egypt, Beyond Fear and A Christmas Carol which completes my summer challeng..."The second one I did not enjoy so much honestly. There wasn't anything too wrong with the characters, I think I was just infactuated with the idea of ancient egypt that I wanted to know more about Taita than what we hear.
Just finished reading The Silver Swordwhich was a blast from my childhood past and am now reading the play 'The Department' by David Williamson which is a bit of a blast from my uni past ... love his plays.

Did you enjoy it KL? It'd be ok if you did enjoy it, but a chore if not!

That's a shame....sometimes the authors waffle on too long, I'm surprised the editors don't cut a lot of it out!

Carmel wrote: "KL, I have one friend (male) who read it and he gave it 4 stars. Anything that has something to do with the creator/'s of Pan's Labyrinth you would think is of good quality!!"So far so good, I reminds me a little of I am Legend
I really enjoyed that movie, I think this book has that degree of disturbingness minus the weird creatures
I am halfway through Jeffrey Eugenides' "Middlesex" and, in contrast to his latest book "The Marriage Plot", am thoroughly enjoying this one! So much, that I snuck away to read it during lunch break!
Dhitri wrote: "I am halfway through Jeffrey Eugenides' "Middlesex" and, in contrast to his latest book "The Marriage Plot", am thoroughly enjoying this one! So much, that I snuck away to read it during lunch break!"Excellent Dhitri. So glad to hear it’s going well :)

I just finished Lullaby Town by Robert Crais .Never heard of him till last week and he appeared at the second hand shop, so I got this one, and it was an enjoyable PI mystery read.
Started Black Cat by Virginia Andrews today. After this one and the final one of this series I'll take a break from her for a while. Her stories are good but god the characters make me angry.

I always wondered how much longer her books would go on, as she passed away years ago....

They're all ghost written now, and the newer ones are no where near as good as the ones written by her. :/
I still enjoy them, but the earlier ones are much more enjoyable.

Yes I thought that must be the case...I just didn't think they would go on so long...someone is making good use of her name, cos that's what sells the books! I stopped reading her not long after the first ones written by others came out, as they were nowhere near as good!

Started The Sealed Letter and I'm not sure it's the book for me. I wasn't expecting the writing style to be as it is but I'm still going to see if I can change my mind.
