I LOVE Mansfield Park! Apparently lots of people find Fanny irritating because she is so unlike most of the other Austen heroines but I really liked the way she changes through the story, yet keeps her integrity. I hope you enjoy it too.

Michael, I haven’t read my copy of Last Summer yet.

I had a feeling it would be one of those stories that would be hard to read emotionally.

I just clicked on your link and read the little blurb about it, and it sounds really cool. Definitely something I'd read. Let me know what you think of it. =)

Adhityani (dhitri) HELLO EVERYONE!

Sorry for being MIA for soooo long! Gosh, I have been missing out on so many good books it seems! DID YOU MISS ME???

I never intended to diappear... one day bub got a double ear infection and I guess due to that I had to drop all online activity, when off FB, too, for a few weeks. And then I decided maybe I should shelve all my fiction first and focus on dry academic readings for uni... At the moment STILL struggling with bub, uni and on top of that I have been trying getting back in shape for Summer (read: trying to fit into those pre pregnancy jeans!) - as a result I haven't really read anything for a while...

...until I started Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Chris McDougall, apparently a must-read for anyone who calls themselves runner - I hope to call myself one in a few months when I complete my first 'real' race. A GREAT READ so far, pretty fascinating! So apparently the modern, cushioned running shoe has ruined human being's running form and thus are the culprit for running related injuries. The remedy? McDougall argues is to go BAREFOOT style... interesting!

Finally, I will be BACK with reading fiction (Murakami's new novel pre-ordered) next month, so will be flooding this group with my posts and comments :)

Oh how I miss GR!!!

David The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is one of my favourites also. I could not get over the fact that someone so YOUNG had the insight into people to write that book.

I'm in a quandary as to what to read next. I just finished The Hunger Games trilogy as there has been so much hype over it, and I really did enjoy them. Now I've got this totally (probably undoable) idea that I want to read all of the winners (over the years), of the Miles Franklin Award, the Man Booker Prize, and the Commonwealth Writers' Prize. Oh yeah, and the Orange prize. INSANE. And I've got the Spring Reading Challenge here on goodreads. ack.

I have a list a mile long of books that I own and haven't read yet. (Unwritten list thus far. One day I'll get around to going around my house and actually cataloguing them.) Ignoring my spring reading challenge, I think I'll read John Burnside's A Summer of Drowning next.

Geoff Woodland | 313 comments Hi Brenda, I'll try and explain.

The book was bought as a present for me, by my daughter.
I had a basic idea what the book was about, having read how successful it had been on Amazon, plus the publicity for the film.
Let’s say I am glad I read it, but I don’t think it is my style of book. I never reached a point where I couldn’t put it down, and I found myself reading faster and faster in an effort to finish ‘The
Help’ so that I could start a different book. (as it was a present I felt obliged to finish). The concept was good and it fed the stereotype of southern white / coloureds, with which I grew up. (GWTW comes to mind)
The drawn out drawl created by the phonetic spelling of the dialogue grated for me. I suppose I never felt sympathy for any of the characters – I am not referring to the situation of the maids, but all the created characters.
Sometimes I feel out of step with the rest of the book buying public. A hugely popular book, with over a million copies sold, left me feeling ho-hum.
Before I read the book I wanted to see the film, but I don't think I'll bother now. If it is part of the flight entertainment on my next overseas trip I'll give it a go, but I will have a glass of red in my hand at the time. :-o)
cheers, Geoff

Thanks for that Geoff! It wasn't a book that I would have picked up to read either...not my type...but I had to read it for my bookclub, and I thoroughly enjoyed it:)

Quetzi Fernald (quetzilibros) | 9 comments Hi Everyone,

I just finished VERONICA'S NAP by Sharon Bially. It's a story of an American girl who goes to Provence to jump start her career as a painter. Little does she know that this trip will become a life changing experience for her.
This is a beautifully written story about a woman's struggle with her creativity. The people are loveable & you might be surprised to see a bit of yourself in this story. I also loved this book because of the vivid descriptions of Aix-Provence. I could see myself walking in the cluttered market streets looking at all the beautiful things, or sitting at an outdoor cafe drinking cafe au late. Or even eating Pizza while sipping a nice glass of wine. Hmmmmmm.....I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories set in France or about women or even a struggling artist who finds themselves in a rut. If you are an armchair traveler, this is the book for you. Ejoy. ;)

Maggie Finished Things I Want My Daughters to Know, not impressed but I'm not a chick lit fan.

Also finished The Dark Horse, only 2 stars I'm afraid. I usually love Rumer Godden's books but this one seemed disorganised and left me cold.

Am now about to start Shadow Princess: A Novel by an author I really enjoy.
