Rosanne Eats, Shoots and Leaves is an excellent book - such a must-have for writers. I have had the hardback since it was first released, presented to me by another author. I often take it down and read a few sections just to refresh my memory and have a giggle.

If you like that sort of thing, Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson is also excellent. You raise your eyebrows and go, "Oh... is that why we say that!"
The Mother Tongue English and How It Got That Way by Bill Bryson

Another book to add to my TBR pile, I am really enjoying 'Eats, Shoots, ...' so I am sure I would like that too.

Meredith Whitford | 30 comments I've just finished "The Help" by Kathrym Stockett, and it is marvellous. One of the best I've read in years. It's set in the early 1960s in Jackson, Mississipi, and is about the relationships between the white women of the town in those segregated days and the black maids who work for them, and often raise their children for them. I really can't recommend it highly enough.

This sounds promising as I just picked it up from the library yesterday.

Adhityani (dhitri) I haven't been on here for ages! Thanks to nasty cold and ear infection (both myself and bubba). Anyway, I finished Barbara Kingsolver's The Lacuna about a week ago, but has just managed to write my review for it. Here is a link: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

FYI, I have not read any of Kingsolver's previous works, but I know that her books tend to start slow. This one starts a little slow, too, but once you get used to the writing style, it pretty much takes off from there. The book is made up of journal entries, personal notes and newspaper clippings, but surprisingly flows very well. Kingsolver brilliantly created gaps in the story that are of just right: wide anough for the imagination yet narrow enough to keep readers going. The theme of the book is ambitious--the relationship between art and politics--and the setting is one that has been copiously dissected in popular art: great depression, WW II, Communism, Revolutionary Art. But this book stands out as an account that not only manages to retell a difficult era, but has infused it with so much color and that has made this book a literary masterpiece yet at the same time a highly enjoyable book.

Dale Renton (dalerenton) Finished reading George Carlin's posthumously published autobiography "Last Words" (review is here : http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/.... ). Carlin's ideas and use of language made a real impression on me (but he does swear a lot!).

Marianne, above this box we are putting our post into, it says 'add book/author'...click on that, at the bottom you tick 'cover' then search for the book you want, and click 'add'. You will then get the cover of the book you want, not just the title.

message 2184: by Geoff (new)

Geoff Woodland | 313 comments I have just finished 'Far Away Home' by Susan Denning - she is a member of Goodreads. I don't read a lot of stories where the main character is female. (not meant as a sexist comment, it is just a fact), but this book had me transfixed from the first page. I have posted my review on her Goodread membership page. I know that I am a lot older than many members, but I think Ms Denning’s book is worth a wider audience than a mere older male :-o)
Check her out on this site where you can link to her website to read sample chapters.
The book is listed on Amazon as an e-book & paperback.

Adhityani (dhitri) Currently reading Susan Freinkel'sPlastic: A Toxic Love Story for my July non fiction challenge. I am almost halfway through and it is a superb read so far!

Freinkel is a science journo and is really good in telling the story of plastic manufacturing, which is packed with scientific information, using simple proses and analogies. She brilliantly chose to unravel humankind's infatuation and hatred to plastic by tracking down the evolution of simple items, such as the comb and the chair.

Laurel Lamperd Just finished Beat Not the Bones by Australian Charlotte Jay. Another Wakefield Press Crime Classic series. The book was first published in 1952 and won the first Edgar Allen Poe award.
Set in Papua New Guinea soon after WW2, a young woman doesn't believe that her husband has committed suicide. She believes he has been murdered and sets out to prove it.
I found it an interesting read but patchy in places.

★ Jess | 3071 comments On the topic of Mortal Instruments Trilogy: I liked them. I didnt LOVE them, they were fun and enjoyable, but not worth all the hype. Im also content with the ending as it is, and the next three dont interest me. Ive read some shocking reviews, which I trust more than the good reviews, since there are examples of (poor) text etc..

On the topic of Neverwhere: OH MY GOODNESS. I finished that yesterday, its was exceptional. Here is my review, for those interested: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/... Yep, 5 stars. I dont give them out often.
I need to get American Gods ASAP.

Right now Im reading Coraline by the same author as Neverwhere/America Gods, just because I need more Neil Gaiman in my life.
