I found the story interesting and intriguing (if somewhat annoying at times) but not scary.

Tango | 290 comments I just finished Past the Shallows and I would definitely recommend it. But be prepared for some tears - luckily I was reading it in bed!

I've just finished The Gathering.

Michael (knowledgelost) I've just abandoned my first book since using Goodreads - too many good books to waste time with a bad one. I'm gonna read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest now, instead of Evil Genius

Did it hurt? I always find abandoning books painful, like extracting a tooth I am stubbornly trying to cling on to.

★ Jess | 3071 comments Noooo! Ive read Evil Genius, and its definitely slow, but so worth it. I almost dropped it myself, but glad I didnt. Sorry you didnt like it :(

message 2108: by Harper (new)

Harper | 23 comments Just finished reading One Day which I enjoyed, despite the character of Dex being largely unlikable. About to get stuck into Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

message 2109: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) It didn't hurt, I've come to a stage in my reading life where I can't be bothered wasting time with a boring or bad book. I have plenty of other books on my list to read, so I won't waste my time with books I don't like.

I did give it a decent go, I read about half of the book, which was about 250 pages.

I am reading The Anubis Gates. I found it on my TBR unidentified as to why it was there. It started a discussion about 'Steampunk'. Which inspired me to pick it up. I now know what steampunk, it is something I am likely to enjoy.

That's interesting Carmel...His previous one, Atonement, is supposed to be really good, and I also heard Solar isn't as good >.< I hope you enjoy it, I'd love to know your final thoughts:)

I read The Anubis Gates a long time ago (ten years plus) and really liked it. I think it predates any reference I remember to Steampunk as a genre - but a good story is a good story!

I also have The Anubis Gates on my TBR list. We must have found it on GR. I havent read it yet - do let me know what you think?

Maggie Shelly wrote: "i can't wait to read her Merlin trilogy and her Talieson ones. I talked to her too and she's really nice and helpful to wannabe writers."

I keep hearing how good these books are ie the Arthur ones. Absolutely must get a copy then. Didnt know about her other series - I've found one Merlin book listed on GR but nothing about Talieson. Do you have a title?

Meanwhile today I've just finished Time to listen how it feels to be young and dying. Very quick read and useful for anyone in nursing. I've also recently finished We Need to Talk About Kevin - highly recommended. Now pondering which book to start (or complete) next. Too many choices!

Currently re-reading both HealThy Nurse:Escape Burnout and Discover the Utimate Life/Work Balance, and Joy of Burnout. Yes, there's a theme there. Both very useful books if you're feeling burned out or heading that way. But I'm also keen to read something for fun - a bit more lighthearted after the last two books I read (mentioned above) and the burnout ones. So I'm off to peruse my TBR list for something fun.

What did you think of We Need to Talk About Kevin?

message 2130: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Lamperd I've just finished reading The Whispering Wall by Patricia Carlon, available from Wakefield Press. It's good to read a mystery written by an Australian author.

Sarah hears two people planning a murder. She needs to alert the victim. But what do you do if you are like Sarah and have suffered a stroke and can't speak or move your body.

Awesome Jessica, you'll love this book. It certainly is a great fun read, and really does showcase Gaimans talent and weirdness/creativity.

It gripped me after about the first 100 pages ie after Kevin is born. Still not sure which of the characters is 'the villain' or whether any of them really are. Perhaps they are all, to some degree, 'at fault' for what occurs. I recommend you read it if you haven't already.

Dee-Ann | 644 comments Just started The Tiger's Wifewhich seems to be very easy reading, especially in comparison to another book I am reading. Just found a quote on the cover recommending the book by the author Colum McCann, which is weird as I have recently only just finished (and loved) a book of his ... did not know it at the time I borrowed this book, which I think I borrowed at the same time.
