message 2201: by Debbie (new)

Debbie I'm currently reading The Great War for Civilization: The Conquest of the Middle East by Robert Disk. It's a fascinating read but very heavy so I'm also reading Women of Courage by Tim Vicary when I'm in the mood for something a bit lighter.

message 2203: by Marybeth (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) The Goose Girl (The Books of Bayern #1) by Shannon Hale The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale – 4****
An expanded story based on the Grimm’s fairy tale of the same name, about a princess who became a goose girl before she could become queen. Hale includes the basic elements of most fairy tales – love, betrayal, wicked enemies, loyal helpers, a little magic, a handsome prince, and a heroine I wanted to see succeed. The audio book was narrated by Cynthia Bishop and a large cast of actors who took on various supplementary roles, resulting in a dynamic and exciting performance.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) Lulu's Christmas Story A True Story of Faith and Hope During the Great Depression by Ludmilla Bollow Lulu’s Christmas Story by Ludmilla Bollow – 3***
The subtitle says it all: A True Story of Faith and Hope During the Great Depression. It’s a charming memoir of a time gone by.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriraty – 4****
Three women’s lives converge as a result of one man’s secret. I will admit that the multiple points of view did confuse me at first, as the narrative switched from Cecelia to Tess to Rachel. I couldn’t help but consider “what would I do” if I were in the position of any one of these women. And some of their actions and reactions took me by surprise. Caroline Lee does a fine job performing the audio version of the book.

message 2211: by Patricia (new)

Patricia I'm reading Prayers for Sale. I've had this book for years and finally decided to read it and get it over with LOL! I actually enjoyed the first chapter and would have read more last night but I couldn't stay awake.

message 2212: by Carrie (new)

Carrie | 6 comments I'm currently beta reading for an indie author. Hellavey book 2 in the New Breed series by Lisa Vandiver. It's pretty good. Vampires from another world get trapped on Earth. Very interesting.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I am currently reading Before I Met You by Lisa Jewell and frankly I'd rather be doing something else.

Jackie | 1241 comments I've read that, Nancy. Only gave it 3 stars. Thought it was pretty rubbish.

message 2215: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 1241 comments That should have said 2 stars not 3!

I thought it was just plain awful. I don't remember ever giving a book a 1 star rating.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day by Winifred Watson – 4 ****
What a delightful comedic romp! I just love Miss Pettigrew, who is in turn amused, shocked, befuddled, brilliant, compassionate, composed, or flustered. The ebullient and casual Miss LaFosse is a perfect counterpoint for Miss Pettigrew, who is restrained and formal. I was reminded of Damon Runyon’s stories, although with a bit more class.

Yuliya (yuliyalovestoread) | 1685 comments Just finished Before I Die by Jenny Downham. It's about sixteen-year-old girl who it's known already from beginning of book won’t survive her leukemia. So she makes a list and vows to do everything on it before she dies. It's very sad story, but by the end of book I was already in the no patient mood and spent some time wondering when she was going to "just die already".
Now I'm reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke. So far it's unusual fantasy book, I'm pleasantly surprised by the style,(classical in style, Dickens a like) it is slowly building but pleasure to read

message 2219: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 1956 comments I'm reading Holes because I saw the movie and came across the book on the library website and What Maisie Knew by Henry James. Still on a classic book kick.

message 2220: by Carrie (new)

Carrie | 6 comments I'm now currently reading City of Bones. I know I've read it before, but since I discovered they made it into a movie, I wanted to reread it because I couldn't remember any of what I'd read of it.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) The Christmas Train by David Baldacci The Christmas Train by David Baldacci – 2.5**
I’d never read anything by Baldacci before and somehow thought of him as a writer of “legal thrillers” so I was surprised to find this holiday romance with a little bit of mystery involved. I was quickly drawn into the story. . For the genre, it was fairly entertaining, but the resolution of the central conflict was just too over the top for me. The novel lost a half star with that. Tim Mathewson does a fine job performing the audio book.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I am having a hard time reading a book or should I say getting past page 5. I have opened so many books and took so many from the library and nothing seems to be satisfying to me. I've been watching lots of television and playing on my IPAD so maybe this is taking brain power always from me. My husband certainly thinks so.

Esther (eshchory) | 575 comments I have started The Sparrow and am enjoying it so far.
After 2014 was a bit 'meh' for my reading I have decided to only read books I want to read not those I think I should read.
Now I just need to find myself some free time when I am not so tired I doze off after 2 pages.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman – 4 ****
Well, I don’t know why I waited so long to read this Newbery Award winner. It was really delightful. It’s a coming-of-age story, a ghost story, a thriller, and a murder mystery. It has all the best of traditional story-telling techniques – friendship, adventure, obstacles the hero must overcome, villains, an innocent child, and more than one surprise. The audio book is masterfully performed by a talented cast of voice artists, including the author.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) The Hare With Amber Eyes A Family's Century of Art and Loss by Edmund de Waal The Hare With Amber Eyes by Edmund de Waal – 4****
When his great uncle Iggie died in 1994, Edmund de Waal inherited a collection of 264 netsuke. The bequest led him to research his family and the history of this collection. Told with eyes wide open, but with a great deal of love and respect, de Waal takes the reader back through time and breathes life into the history of art, culture, politics, and war. The audio book is capably narrated by Michael Maloney.
