Vi | 943 comments Sam, how are you liking Mistborn The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson so far? And how far along are you in the Fever series?

Jennifer - Shadowfever was darn good. I didn't want it to end. I haven't picked up Iced (Dani O'Malley #1) (Fever #6) by Karen Marie Moning yet mainly because I don't want to read a Cliffhanger Ending series with 1 year between release dates.

message 152: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) I'm enjoying it, but because it's so long and also doesn't really fit any of my other challenges, it's been kind of getting put on the back burner lately. Plus the new Neil Gaiman book came out this week, so I had to read that immediately :P

I still have Shadowfever and Iced left.

Amber (crazyaboutbooks) | 499 comments I've picked Connected (Connections #1) by Kim Karr for the cover-love shelf. So sorry for being gone most of this but life has dicided to dump on me right now. Hopefully it will not last much longer.

Jennifer H Just checking in to let you know I'm almost done with my "Cover-Love" book

message 155: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) I started my "cover love" book last night but it seems like it'll be a pretty quick read :)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments I'm glad to hear you're enjoying your books, ladies. I'm almost finished with "Siege & Storm" myself (only around 100 pages left and I can tell that shit is about to go down!).

Sam (theliteraryhooker) Haha LL I was reading your status updates and comments on your book, and the comparison to Labyrinth totally moved Shadow and Bone up my TBR!

Cover Love:
Siege and Storm (The Grisha, #2) by Leigh Bardugo
Date Read: June 25th
Rating: ★★★★☆
Review:

WOW. That was sooooo good. Alina has really come into her own in this book. Sure, there were a few moments where I wanted to punch her in the throat but her faults are what makes her endearing-even as they make me want to tear my hair out in frustration. Alina is straight badass in this book with her Sun Summoner powers.

There's new characters like Sturmhond, the cocky privateer and Tamar and Tolya (sp?), the golden-eyed, badass twins. There's also the return of David, Genya, The Apparat and the deliciously evil Darkling. And of course, Mal. I love me some Mal but in this book I wanted to stomp on his dangly bits a few dozen times.

description

Oh yeah. GET THE FUCK OVER YOURSELF, MAL.

Anyway, I had a few issues with S&S but it didn't keep me from enjoying it and leaving S&S salivating for more. Leigh Bardugo at her worse is better than a lot of authors I've read at their best. She is truly talented IMO. I can't wait for Ruin and Rising (although I'm gonna have to, dammit!). The title is extremely appropriate.

Shadowfever (Fever, #5) by Karen Marie Moning
Shadowfever
Finished: 6/26
Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥

What an incredible book! There aren't words that do it justice. The twists, turns, surprises in it are absolutely amazing. I figured some things correctly, some things way off base - it kept me guessing and completely enthralled, intrigued throughout the entire series! Mac's journey is completed in this book, and it was an epic ride, for sure. Karen Marie Moning is a true master!!!!!

Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1) by Becca Fitzpatrick - Becca Fitzpatrick
Finished: June 28th, 2013
Rating: 3/5 stars

This book was a decent YA paranormal novel. It wasn't anything ground-breaking, but it was a quick read and it kept me interested in the story. I'd heard a lot of good things about the book before starting it, so I guess I was just expecting MORE from it. The first hundred or so pages just felt like Twilight with angels to me. After that, the story did pick up, but I feel like it just glossed over too many things while giving way too many details about others. I'll likely read the second book in the series, but I'm not going to be in any rush to do so.

Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee

WOW, what a world this author created. This is one of the best heroine books i've read in a while. Great storyline and kick ass characters. If you haven't read yet, you should. I picked it up when it was .99 and have to say it's money well sent.

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments Good morning ladies and happy Shelf day! I'm glad you enjoyed your books Amber & Jennifer & I'm glad you liked HH enough to give it another go, Sam. I read it way back when I joined GR in 2010 & it was not my bag at all....but lots of people seem to love it.

Anyway, I'm currently inhaling coffee as I just woke up & am just the slightest bit hungover. But I'm off today so I plan to be as lazy as possible. FYI, as soon as we get the "Cover Love" & "FS" stamps, we'll have three-in-a-row. Nice, eh? ^_^ And with Amber's triple R, we've got the "Strong Heroines" stamp!!!!

Vi | 943 comments Sorry, I haven't checked in this past week. I've been little under the weather (there's been heavy haze here)

I finished my cover-love book Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles #1) by Melina Marchetta a few days back. I'll write a review tomorrow. I also started Shards of Honour (Vorkosigan Saga, #1) by Lois McMaster Bujold but I've put it on hold in case the aliens shelf is called. The few pages I read looked interesting.

Sam (theliteraryhooker) *sigh* I guess I should have waited a week to read Hush, Hush.

This week's shelf is angels & demons .

I think I'm going to read Magic Slays, but can someone just make sure I'm not screwing up somewhere and it DOES actually work? lol It seems like one person has it on their "angels and demons" shelf (pg. 28 of the shelves) but I want to make sure I'm alright. :)

My choices:

Magic Slays (Kate Daniels, #5) by Ilona Andrews - Ilona Andrews
Finished: July 2nd, 2013
Rating: 5/5 stars

This book taught me a valuable lesson: not all books are meant to be read in public. Depending on the page, this book had me laughing my ass off, screaming at the pages, or kicking my feet and squeeing like a little fangirl. I LOVED this book! Curran may still only be my #2 alpha (behind Barrons, of course) but him and Kate have to be the best book couple ever, regardless of genre. I loved that Kate was finally starting to be open and honest about her emotions, but still managed to kick magical ass, all while being as snarky as possible (in a good way.) I've loved the whole series, but this one just really blew me away! I can't wait for the next book!

Wait for Dusk (Dark Days, #5) by Jocelynn Drake
Date Read: July 4th
Rating: ★★★★★
Review:

AWESOMAZING addition to the "Dark Days" series! I loved everything about it, especially the Mira/Danaus scenes. I feel like I've been waiting FOREVA for (view spoiler) A lot of shit went down in this book. Alot of sad but also badass shit. I kinda don't want to read the final book if only because it's the END. O_O What will I do without Mira & Danaus? Curl into a ball & cry, that's what. *tear*

Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh
Angels' Blood by Nalini Singh
Finished: 7/6
Rating: ♥♥♥♥

If your looking for a great can't-put-down book then this is it. Elena is the strong confidant woman you want to know and love. Raphael is the dark and sexy Angel. Nalini's breathtaking story about Angels, Vampires and Hunters is a must read.

As a Nalini newbie, I found Angels' Blood surprisingly pleasant. If you enjoy Paranormal Romances this is a great intro in to an amazing world.

message 194: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments YAY! Glad you liked AB, Jennifer! ☺ Now you have to read Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh . I read her "Guild Hunter" series way before I started the "Psy-Changeling" one because I was afraid it wouldn't be as good as GH....and boy was I wrong. Singh keeps getting better and better.

The new shelf is up, ladies, and it is DYSTOPIAN! I'll be back soon with my pick.

message 195: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) Whee that's a good shelf for me :) I have lots of dystopians kicking around. I'll be back with my pick, I'm going to try to find something that works for other challenges too.

message 196: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H For the Dystopian bookshelf I'll be reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

message 197: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments Since I'm reading ZOMBIES for another challenge (as I am utterly & completely fascinated by that particular supe) I figure I should read a book about Zombies for this one. So for "Dystopian" I'm gonna read either Skin (Flesh, #2) by Kylie Scott or This is Not a Test by Courtney Summers . I haven't decided which. A smutty post-apocalyptic read featuring zombies or a scary YA featuring zombies? Hmmmmm.

message 198: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) My vote is smutty zombies, just because those don't seem like two genres that would go together...Haha.

I'm going to read either Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1) by Kami Garcia or Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, #2) by Cassandra Clare . I'm going to be starting both of them in the next day or so, so whichever one I finish first I'll use for dystopian, and I'll use the other for free space.
