Ya know, this used to be one of my favorite series. Now, I still have book #11 on tbr and I just can't seem to make myself read it. I keep putting it in challenges hoping to push myself to finish it, only to replace it with something else. I will eventually get to them. After all, I'm too close to the end. I'm just not going to rush it anymore. And I definitely won't be buying them anymore :)

I completely understand. It used to be my favorite series too. Book 11 was not good. I had to force myself to read book 12 and was surprised. It actually turned out well. I was hoping that the final book would be amazing, but no such luck. I felt I had invested too much time in the series not to finish it. Harris should have stopped at 10. I'm so disappointed. :(

Just another way for Harris to make a buck. I doubt I will be reading 13.5, much less paying for it. ;)

Hunting Ground (Alpha & Omega, #2) by Patricia Briggs is on the S.O.S. bookshelf.

Also, I finished my book and have my review, but it's not a typical review. I think most of you have read it already, so it's more of my thoughts on the book instead of a synopsis. I hope that's okay?? If not I can try to redo it.

Nichole | 1199 comments Red-Headed Stepchild (Sabina Kane, #1) by Jaye Wells
Title: Red-Headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells
Shelf: Assassins
Read: 6/5/13
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Synopsis: In a world where being of mixed-blood is a major liability, Sabina Kane has the only profession fit for an outcast: assassin. But, her latest mission threatens the fragile peace between the vampire and mage races and Sabina must scramble to figure out which side she's on. She's never brought her work home with her---until now.
Review:
”Digging graves is hell on a manicure, but I was taught good vampires clean up after every meal.”
And I’m hooked….

The beginning of the story was fast-paced with lots of action, humor, killing and great world building. I like seeing new spins on vampire lore. The red hair being the vampire gene and the shade determining the age was pretty cool. Smoking blood, well that was a new one for me too.

Then after the first 10 or so chapters, I got bored. Sabina was really working my nerves with her blind loyalty to the vamps. I mean, they treated her like crap! Why wouldn’t she want to learn as much as she could about her mage heritage? The other side of her family tree? I understand not being able to trust Adam or the mages, but Knowledge is a weapon. Luckily, Giguhl brought much needed comic relief to the story. I hope we see more of him in the future. Even though Adam was not quite Alpha enough for my tastes, I really liked him. And with him you get the sexual tension. I would like to see where that goes. It’s the romantic in me, I can’t help it. Sabina slowly started accepting that she had friends, people that cared about her and vice versa.

The last 30% of the story picked up again. Sabina is finally accepting acknowledging the truth, that Clovis is not the biggest baddie around. Oh no, that’s Grandma Lavinia and her evil plans to take over the world. There was a big showdown, with lots of killing and kick-assery and an unsatisfying end for the villians. I was out for more blood. This wasn’t a great book, but it was good enough that I want to continue the series. I’m looking forward to Sabina embracing, hopefully, her mage abilities if not her family. So, I’m hoping the next book is better.

I enjoyed this addition to the series, but so many times my heart ached for Lore - everything was stacked against him and it looked like there was no way for things to improve! I was thrilled with the way things worked out though, both with his brothers and with Idess, especially the way they got revenge at the end. This is a fun series :)

This second installment in the Black Wings series is close to as exciting as the first. The poor heroine is still reeling from the various events in the first book, dealing with the fact that she cannot be with the man she wants and is engaged to one she doesn't want or even know, when her evil half-brother attacks again. She spends most of the book just trying to keep half a step ahead of her enemies, but I think she ended it with a greater appreciation of her own strength.

This has got to be one of the best urban fantasy series I've read this year. There's tons of action and lots of scary, teeth-gnashing supernatural critters, and a psychotic goddess for our heroes to battle. I loved learning more about Jessica's powers. Can't wait to read the next book.

Nichole | 1199 comments Hunting Ground (Alpha & Omega, #2) by Patricia Briggs
Title: Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs
Shelf: Free Space
Read: 6/8/13
Rating: ★★★★★

Review:

In Hunting Ground, Charles and Anna attend a summit in Seattle to discuss Bran's decision to reveal the wolves to the humans. We meet a large cast of characters from all over the world and deal with politics, murder, legend and magic in this amazing book.

Patricia Briggs has written another character-driven story that marks her as a favorite author of mine. She has the ability to take an ordinary character and turn them into Greatness. She can also make an extraordinary character almost human by showing their flaws and vulnerabilities. Hunting Ground is the perfect example.

"Anna Latham Cornick, Omega of the Aspen Creek Pack. Wolf. Sister. Daughter. Lover. Beloved."

Anna is the star here. She is really starting to come into her own and what it means to be Omega. We get to see how her confidence is growing and the impact it has on her and everyone around her. And let's not forget Charles.

"If it would benefit you, I would kill every wolf here. But there are things that you need to do- and interfering with that is not protecting, not in my book. The best way for me to protect you is to encourage you to be able to protect yourself."

And that is exactly what he is trying to do, even though it goes against his instincts. I love that he is so patient and tender with her. My favorite part of the book was the development with their mate bond. It is an adjustment and scary for both of them, but wondrous to witness. And poor Charles feels so undeserving, but Anna is trying to show him that she sees the real him.

"He loved her beyond all reason and didn't expect her to love him back. He was just waiting for her to wise up."

Lastly, I love Arthurian legends. What an unexpected gift to see it in an urban fantasy novel. Even though it may not have went the way I wanted it to go, it was still fascinating for me. So, Thank You Mrs. Briggs, for writing another book to add to my favorites. I can't wait to read Fair Game in the near future.

I don't have any words for this one...I'm afraid to spoil the story - so here goes. If you haven't started this series, what are you waiting for? This has got to be the best kept secret in the urban fantasy/ghost story world. These books are addictive and rightfully so. The characters are real life people with issues about their weight, their mental state, and their lives. The story keeps you captivated - I definitely did not want to put this book down.

On to the next book.

On Dublin Street
Book Boyfriends Shelf

★★★★

It turns out I had already read this book. It must have been I while back because the details were fuzzy, so I decided to read it again. The story is good. There's a balance of serious, comedy and naughtiness. The writing is good and the author does a great job of building the characters and their world.

Ok, now onto the story. Joss has heartache in her life. Her parents and sister were killed in a car accident and then her best friend dies tragically. Fast forward eight years. She now lives in Scotland and due to her past she doesn't let anyone get close to her. She gets a new roommate (Ellie), falls in love with Ellie's brother (Braden) and tries to push everyone away when things get to serious.

Not a bad read at all...just a bit sappy at times. Oh, and the "caveman" crap that Braden pulls gets to be a bit much. Not sure if there is another book in the series, but I will probably read it if there is.

Title: Wallbanger by Alice Clayton
Shelf: Book Boyfriends
Read: 6/10/13
Rating: ★★★★★

Review:
This book is my favorite read of 2013, so far. I loved it! Wallbanger has LOL until you cry humor, sizzling sexual tension, snarky banter, a slow burning romance and a HEA. Oh, and Clive the cat, we can’t forget him.

Caroline Reynolds has lost her O. Or rather, it was hijacked by Cory Weinstein, the machine-gun fucker and hasn’t been seen since. On the first night in her new apartment she is wallbanged awake by her neighbor. * Cue laughter* She becomes a peephole pervert trying to get a peek at the wallbanger and his harem but only gets glimpses of him. Sexually frustrated and tired from sleepless nights, she decides to confront him. And the verbal sparring begins.

Deciding to call a truce, they become friends. However, the sexual tension between them is off the charts. A slow simmering romance blooms with lots of swoon-worthy Simon moments. Caroline reunites with O and they get their HEA. The book ends with an epilogue from Clive, which was hilarious!

If you like romantic comedies you MUST read this book. I will definitely be reading more from Alice Clayton.

*one of my favorite Wallbanger clips*

AS does a fantastic job of describing the cemetery plots the gardens the smells etc. I felt like I was already in South Carolina it felt that real. Made me homesick for those Georgia Pines. Definitely reading the next book in this series soon.

I enjoyed this unusual story - I liked the gothic feel, the southern setting, and the narrator's voice. However, it took me a while to get into it and I think that was partly because I am enjoying young adult books less these days. Lena seemed like such a tragic character, and the more that was revealed the sorrier I felt for both her and Ethan. It will be interesting to see how the series continues.
