Sounds good :)

Lys (lysrowan) What are you guys thinking so far?

Leigh | 18513 comments Mod
What is the test? Why do they need the girls? Is James somehow involved? I could not believe both Ava and James accepted what Kate said about Henry.

I like Kate. is Kate's mom Diana?

I was wondering that, too.

Ok thanks :)

I like the book so far - not all the way through today's chapters yet. The one thing that bothered me was how easily James and Ava accepted the story of what happened to Ava by the River.

I agree Sheri.

Through chapter 10 -
Not much happened between 5 and 10. I so would have demanded my own clothes! I'm not entirely sure I like Ava. She seems like a character that doesn't necessarily have to be in the story. I wonder if she is going to have a larger part later...maybe she's the bad guy?

I like it so far but am not necessarily in love with it. I hope it goes into more detail about the gods and mythology. The more I read the more I think that maybe her mom is Diana.

message 12: by Lys (new) - rated it 1 star

Lys (lysrowan) I think that James and Ava are both part of the Goddess thing. Ava seems like an obvious trap or test, and as for James, well ... him, I'm not sure. But he reminds me of Puck in the Iron Fey series, and so I keep expecting him to be the friend who keeps a big secret to the detriment of the MC.

Ava was the test. James, I'm not sure about either.

Leigh wrote: "Ava was the test. James, I'm not sure about either."

I was wondering that...if maybe her sacrificing herself for Ava was the first test - but why is she still hanging around?

message 18: by Lys (new) - rated it 1 star

Lys (lysrowan) She was at least the bait.
Henry's weird. He's like:
you're getting the better deal, I'm getting the better deal; hmm? what deal? lalalla.

My hubby got his promotion today (:D) so we will be moving sometime. He has to start his new job next week I think, but me and the kids will stay here until we can sell our house...hopefully before school starts in the fall :)

So I liked the book. I thought the story was original. I would have liked to have more of the Greek mythology - maybe in the next book? I wasn't terribly surprised at the ending, but there were some things I wasn't expecting (view spoiler).

I do want to read the other two books to see where the story goes.

message 24: by Gwenn (last edited May 29, 2013 02:19PM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Gwenn (idlecuriosity) I wish I didn't know that there were greek gods walking around before reading this book. I can't just sit back and enjoy the silly drama.
Now i'm like oh, i bet that's So-n-so.

I agree that james is very Puck like, and rather...

I didn't know before I read, but I had figured it out before the end. I don't know enough about the gods to have guessed who most of them were...though after seeing the list at the end of the book they made sense.

I was not happy with James in today's reading. Gods and their duplicity. I wasn't sure about Henry at first but he is growing on me.

message 27: by Sheri, Bookworm (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sheri | 13547 comments Mod
Yeah, Henry is kind of mysterious through the whole book, even to the end. We never really find out much about him.

message 28: by Gwenn (new) - rated it 1 star

Gwenn (idlecuriosity) Ok /henry/
First you make an agreememnt with a girl while she is distraught and without fully explaining things to her; a verbal agreement under duress.
Then, then! You show up again when she's even more traumatized to insist that she uphold the bargin you forced on her. Dont worry though, it is ok cause you arent gonna sleep with her while shes your hostage. Really!?
'Do you understand what will happen if you refuse?' No she bleeping doesnt she doesnt have the ability to cope with your mysterious bs her mother is dying!
Seriously girl, a kid fresh out of law school could get him off your back and slp a restraing order on him the size of texas. I dont care if he is hades, this is just emotional abuse.

message 29: by Gwenn (new) - rated it 1 star

Gwenn (idlecuriosity) Uh, sorry for the rant.

message 30: by Lys (new) - rated it 1 star

Lys (lysrowan) Gwenn-
you are so sexy when you rant.
OMG, I love you a lot.
but but but
just keep reading. It gets worse. Better? lol.

--
I also have a rant. I'll be posting it soon.

Oh, hey guys~ : Check out the June Reading Challenge =D

message 31: by Gwenn (new) - rated it 1 star

Gwenn (idlecuriosity) I shall keep reading, yes. I look forward to your sexay rant :P

message 32: by Sheri, Bookworm (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sheri | 13547 comments Mod
Lol! Rant away :) I thought the same thing - he didn't explain anything to her but expected her to uphold all his rules? The very first thing I would have done if I was her was demand normal clothes. No one ever said dresses were part of the deal.

message 33: by Gwenn (new) - rated it 1 star

Gwenn (idlecuriosity) True story. I thought she was supposed to be comfortable. Not dressed up to be eyecandy /henry/ pervert more like. I hope orpheous shows up and makes you cry and lose all your mysterious bad ass points without gaining any sympathetic sensitive guy points.
I maaaaay have issues with hades. Every time james talks bad about him i nod emphatically.
I also may love hermes above and beyond what he deserves.
I admit im biased.

message 34: by Lys (new) - rated it 1 star

Lys (lysrowan) You? Biased? Noooo.
I like James better simply cause he's pucklike. But I don hate Henry. I hate the. X-Tianizing of Greek mythology. I hate that carter clearly doesn't know her gods as well as she thinks she does. I HATE the slut shaming.

message 35: by Lys (new) - rated it 1 star

Lys (lysrowan) Oh. What are we reading next week? Btw: I am done too. Leigh, where are you?

Whatever you ladies want is fine. I'd like to read the next two in this series still, mostly because I own them both already. Leigh wants to read Cinder - have you already read that?

message 38: by Sheri, Bookworm (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sheri | 13547 comments Mod
I'm lukewarm about Henry. I didn't necessarily like him, but I don't outright hate him, either. I do like James. (Haven't read Iron Fey yet so I couldn't say about Puck)

message 39: by Lys (new) - rated it 1 star

Lys (lysrowan) Puck is AWESOME!
Way cooler than any of the characters in this book.
All of them.
Put together.
...

---
Gwenn (Meg) and I have read Cinder, but I am ok with hanging out. I intend to read the rest of Goddess Test series, although I can say truthfully that I do not like it - I want to know if it gets better or worse.

Do you want to plan on reading book two on Monday? That way if it doesn't get better you have people to vent to :) Leigh and I can read Cinder together a different time.

message 41: by Lys (new) - rated it 1 star

Lys (lysrowan) Sounds good to me. Are you going to read the novella?
1.5?
I might read it over the weekend?

message 42: by Gwenn (new) - rated it 1 star

Gwenn (idlecuriosity) William Shakes... never actually memeorized how to spell his name, uh, his puck was super awesome. I dunno Iron Fey either.
cinder was good, i thought. WAY better characters than in this.
a free book would be fantastic for me #tightwad
maybe we could do an old classic that is typically free on kindle for the 'Something Old' june challenge?
I will probably finish Goddess Test later today.

I hadn't even looked at the novellas. Might as well. It's only $1.50 on Amazon.

message 44: by Gwenn (new) - rated it 1 star

Gwenn (idlecuriosity) So far, the most compelling character for me has been the main character's mom. She's the only person I want to learn more about. Like why she knew about the hedge n stuff. I can see why the MC, kate? i dunno she's so forgetable to me, is obsessed with her, but I sorta HATE how obsessed she is.
Most interesting thigns so far:
Mom
The river
the MC's new maids
If Ava will show up in the mansion

Sorry I am a little late to the grats party. Are the kids cool with it? Moving, I mean? It can be rough. Which grades are they in?

Lys (lysrowan) Lafayette doesn't have book two for ebook, unfortunately.
Just for hardcover.

message 49: by Gwenn (new) - rated it 1 star

Gwenn (idlecuriosity) um, since i'm new, sorry if this is in the wrong place/dumb
free on kindle, and also free at Gutenburgproject that I would like to read with people
Importance of being Earnest - i haven't read it in ages and i really liked it and want other people to read it too. comedy/romance

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_pg_1?r...
i sorta want to read or re-read all of them. but I'm cool with whatever.
i'm new to book clubs. so bere with me. i will get better. i hope

Our library is limited - usually when I am reading a series they only have a few books in the series so I end up buying at least a couple of the books. Sucks.
