There are of course Groups here on GR that are focused on YA books, you could ask on some of them. There are also Listopias here, and those have tags - you could maybe search by different keyword tags. For example if you search by 'gast' you might get books about that kind of being.
It does sound like an interesting & memorable book, and you do give lots of clues. Someone knows it - we just need to get the attention of that someone! :)
Also, don't give up just because no one has recognized it right away. I have had books that weren't id'ed for months--or even years. But, hopefully, that certain someone will read your post and then id your book for you. Just keep bumping it monthly and cross your fingers and toes.

I bump usually every couple of weeks...

edit: I meant fountain not well

edit: oh and the second one is called The Secret of the Stones, which also goes with the stone part you mentioned.

I also really hope this is her book because as soon as I saw the cover on amazon I was pretty sure this was the mystery book; upon reading the description, it only made me even more certain.

The title likely didn't have the word "stones" in it, but it was part of a series and the series title may have mentioned stones. The book was young adult fantasy, probably published in 2000, give or take two years.
I remember a few characters - there was definitely a girl called Esmeralda. She was a gypsy and running away from something or someone. There may have been a boy called Nico with her. There was also a boy possibly named Colin from "our" world who fell through a fountain at an art museum (on a school trip?) after seeing a stone at the bottom, and he landed in the same world as the other characters were in previously.
Colin ends up at some sort of army camp and proceeds to humiliate himself pretty soundly. There's a drill sergeant type who makes him do a lot of pushups.
Someone Nico knew was killed early on in the story, which is why he had to flee.
Phrases I remember are Esmeralda describing breathing in one nostril and out of the other, and talking about how marigolds open the heart.
Esmeralda encounters a creature, person, something called Calliope toward the end of the book and is concerned that Calliope is something called a "gast."
The cover was bordered on the left by a column of different colored round stones set in gold squares. There was a boy on the cover, I think, as well as a tame bird of prey of some kind. This bird shows up in the story too (I think it was Nico's pet?).
That's all I remember. It seems like a lot, but I can't seem to find anything about it... Any and all help would be appreciated.
