I remember almost nothing about this book other than it was very weird, possibly weird enough to use toilets for meditation. The main character is human, and there is something different about her that I think makes her more normal/basic or less evolved than other life forms. And I don't recall if there's a feline character, but there is a (lesbian?) polar bear.

No, my book takes place on a space station or large spaceship. The Child Garden is set on Earth.
