Cody Vaters | 118 comments Started The Girl who Played with Fire last night, got about 160 pages into it. I like that Lisbeth is more prominent in this one, she's a fascinating character, I enjoy getting to know her a bit more.

Now I'm reading Cat's Cradle.

Love this book! I knew they titled the American movie Let Me In, but didn't realize they changed the book title too. Kind of a bummer since the name was part of the homage to the 80s.

That is a fantastic book. If you want a similar film experience (classic tropes, great new twist), check out A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT.

Kandice | 4387 comments I've been reading Vurt by Jeff Noon for another group and it is a crazy book! It's labeled cyberpunk, but I'm unclear what that really means even after looking it up.

Has anyone read it?

I love Jeff Noon. I reread Automated Alice when our daughter, named Alice, was born earlier this year. I need to reread the entire Vurt series at some point. I read them back when I devoured a bunch of cyberpunk, like William Gibson's books and Snow Crash.

message 3418: by Aditya (new)

Aditya Finished The Drawing of the Three The Drawing of the Three (The Dark Tower, #2) by Stephen King by Stephen King. It is a huge step up from the previous book in the series and feels like vintage King with an action-driven plot and memorable characters. The plot though much more ambitious in scope than its predecessor is more focused while the writing is not only evocative but also economical (unlike a lot of late King books which plead out for a good editor). There is some dark humor (Roland's adventures in the modern world drew some pleasant unexpected smiles from me), a great gunfight (a series dedicated to gunslingers was calling out for one)and nice character development (which the first book was sorely lacking); all of which add to the enjoyment of the read.

However it still gives too little information about the titular Dark Tower for my liking. If the books it sets up are as good as this one I would bump the rating to 5 stars but because as of now it's an incomplete story, my rating - 4/5.

I liked it. The story is intriguing and there is a deep analysis of the characters But, there are so many twists that I understand why some people are disappointed. There are more point when the author could have written the END word, given a different tone to the investigation.

Gabriel (geleven) Currently reading:

- The Best American Short Stories 2014 collection
- Andrew Schwab - Fame is Infamy
- Ernest Hemingway - To have and to have not
- a short story collection by Jules Verne
- Mr. Bones, by Paul Theroux (short stories)

I guess I am set on short stories this month. They are standalones and don't force me to stick around a thick book right now.

Peace!

Marnie (marniek) | 14 comments Trigger Warnings by Neil Gaiman. A little apprehensive about starting one of his novels so thought I'd give short stories a try. I really want to like his books - the descriptions always seem amazing - but something about his style is a little off-putting for me. I'm not usually a short story reader - not enough time to bond with the characters - but these are interesting, and a few beautiful.

message 3440: by Sara the Librarian (new)

Sara the Librarian (museoffire) Marnie the short stories are a great place to start. Also not sure how you feel about graphic novels but he's got a wonderful fantasy series called "Sandman" that's all out in graphic novel form now. In terms of world building and characters there's honestly nothing like it.

I am currently reading more books than I should be. I'm about to start "Finder's Keepers" the second in the "Mr. Mercedes" trilogy, am disappearing into the depths of John Connolly's latest Charlie Bird novel "A Song of Shadows", Jean Hegland's "Into the Forest", and "Star Wars: Aftermath" because along with everything else I'm a Star Wars geek.
