Otto, I have read Wild Fire and The Lion from the John Corey series by DeMille and I loved them both, my husband, also. I just picked up The Panther and am hoping for the same. I get a wicked kick out of John Corey and his wife seems to have the same sarcasm as he does.

Good to hear about NOS4R2 (spelled that way in the UK for some reason), as it's on my TBR list. Will be my first Joe Hill too.

Back on topic, I am currently reading Norwegian Wood Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami by Haruki Murakami. Only read a few pages, but the words have a lyrical, otherworldly quality to them that you can just let wash over you as you savour them :)

Kandice | 4387 comments Norwegian Wood is a gorgeous novel. The plot isn't, but the way Murakami tells it is. I feel that way about all of his books. Describing them to someone does them no justice.

Yeah, this is how I feel too. The plot isn't anything really special so far, but the way he describes everything...

If you ever want to post link you click on the "add book/author" link on the top right corner of the text box, you'll get a drop down search menu, click in the seacrh bar, type the title or author and a list will drop down. Highlight the book or author you want and it will insert the linked title/name. You can then switch to the other by clicking the drop down box again and insert that as well.

At the bottom of the drop down list you have the option to post the title or cover of a book. Both will appear as links.

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Aaahhh....I do most of my posting from my phone where there is no such box. But when I am on my laptop at work I will do so. Thanks for the heads up!

message 2315: by E. (new)

E. | 242 comments Kandice, I started Goodreads on the iPhone app, which unfortunately at this point has no add book/author function.

TheLongWait, I still use the app because it's so fast to read updates, notifications, book links, regular posts. But if I do want to post a book link, I scroll to the bottom of the thread screen and tap "copy topic URL" then open Safari, or whatever browser, and paste into the address box. Then you can add linked book titles or covers.

Betsy Hetzel | 469 comments I SO hope that one of my groups decides to read
BY REASON of INSANITY, by Shane Stevens as it sounds like just the kind of psychological thriller that I like: young boy/ traumatic, abusive childhood (not that I want ANY child to have that) which explains his tortured feelings toward his mother whom he kills, ends up in prison, which must have been horrible, escapes and goes on a killing spree but all the while, you are inside of his head trying to piece together the WHY, which I love.

Anyone read BR of INSANITY? Did you like it or not and why? Help me out here, please.

Annie, the 11/22/63 book was my first King read also. I was blown away. It's still my favorite. Even among the King books I'm less fond of, I'm always amazed at his ability to paint characters completely, even the small ones. I also liked Mr. Mercedes a lot.

I never really cared for Murakami. He is a little too 'abstract' for my taste. This as well as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle confused me a lot.

The Long Walk is next on my 'King list' (im going with chronological order). Here's hoping.

Betsy Hetzel | 469 comments Michael, As you and I tend many times to be on the same wave length, may I ask you IF , in your opinion, BATTLE ROYALE, might just be too violent for my tastes? Not a great comparison, but I loved THE HUNGER GAMES but then those books did not center/linger on the dying part of child vs. child: alluded to but not significantly graphically described.
What are your thoughts about this book's violence?

message 2337: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4387 comments Betsy wrote: "Michael, As you and I tend many times to be on the same wave length, may I ask you IF , in your opinion, BATTLE ROYALE, might just be too violent for my tastes? Not a great comparison, but..."

I know you didn't ask me, but I've read both and can say that although Battle Royale doesn't linger overlong on the deaths of the children it is way more graphic than The Hunger Games.

Like HG the focus of the book is the relationships and feelings experienced by the children, but because you begin with so many more "players", there are many more death scenes and they are often very, very graphic.

I don't know if I've become densensitized to violence over the years or not, but the violence in BR didn't bother me. As Kandice says, it is more violent than HG but I didn't feel like the author dwelled on it or tried to be especially gruesome, especially since there are many places where he could have. If you feel like we are on the same wavelenght [:-)] then I would say go for it. I'm quite enjoying it.

message 2339: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Hetzel | 469 comments To Kandice and Michael, Thank you for your honest input. Funny, violence w/ adults is much easier for me to handle than violence involving children so.... I may have to pass on this one. But, thank you.

I went through a lot of choices, downloaded the audio books of weaveworld and Lisy's Story... but before I could get to them I needed another shot of Robbins. Not too many audiobooks, but I did get Villa Incognito and started listening this morning. Great as usual. Also ran across a book in e-Book Miner called FEW ARE CHOSEN by a new author, M. T. McGuire. Started it as a nighttime read. Really really funny. Reminds me a little bit of Anansi Boys. More to come on that one.

the "in cognito" song... yes it's great. I'm going broke doing it but looks like I'll have to buy the paperback of this one too because I just can't look stuff up in an audiobook, and I wanted to quote a few lines of the song here.

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments If I haven't said it before, The Four Fingers of Death by Rick Moody us great! I wholly recommend it.....now that's if the book doesn't suddenly fall apart. I'm only about 300 pages in and it's 725 pages total. But so far it's very very good.
