Mike Marsbergen (mikemarsbergen) | 37 comments Dead Girl Walking by Christopher Brookmyre. The sixth in the Jack Parlabane series. Really good so far, but still early.

message 5009: by [deleted user] (new)

Kings of Broken Things by Theodore Wheeler. I had never heard of the book or the author, but so far it has my interest.

Linda (beaulieulinda117gmailcom) | 1115 comments I just started Roadwork by Stephen King.

message 5012: by Aditya (new)

Aditya Finished Heaven's Prisoners by James Lee Burke. One of the best books I have read all year. Burke is brilliant, the perfect concoction of hard boiled dialogue and literary musings.

A read that deserves a detailed review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty"

I haven't heard of that one. How is it?"

Apologies for the delayed response, but didn't want to give my thoughts until finished. "Elsewhere" is a pretty slight (page wise), as it clocks in at 222 pages. It is another "psychic and a few other random people visit a supposed haunted house" in the vein of Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House" and Richard Matheson's "Hell House," though it was not as good as either of those works. It has a twist ending that is pretty obvious, but I enjoyed Blatty's style. It moves quickly (perhaps a bit too quickly), and if Blatty had fleshed out some things a bit more it could have been a very good novel. A good, quick read for a Fall weekend.

Greg (popzeus) American Elsewhere

Only 50 or so pages in but it has hooked me from the off. Really like the way this guy writes.

Matthew no matter how hard you try you will not be able to erase what you saw in the movie. Just when you think it is gone something will pop up and remind you of the movie.

Donna (dfree46) | 48 comments I am reading "Cycle of the Werewolf" as I just finished "Roadwork" as recommended for September. Loved the first one and already am loving the second one. HAPPY READING😀

Matt | 193 comments Just finished Make Room! Make Room!. I'm not sure if I enjoyed, but it was an interesting read. Nothing like The Stainless Steel Rat or Deathworld Trilogy, but a good attempt at dystopian fiction. Much better than Soylant Green.

Tim Gunter | 120 comments Currently reading the second Death Pope book. Just read the first one because the title intrigued me, and it ended up being decent enough for me to continue on with the story.

Scott | 401 comments I recently read:
The Gunslinger (3rd time)
Needful Things and
Gwendy's Button Box

Now I'm reading The Girl in the Maze. OK so far, just a little confusing with time jumping.

Andrew✌️ (andrew619) | 335 comments In these days I read all the books inthe Pottermore Presents collection: https://www.goodreads.com/series/1868....
I was happy to read other stories about Harry Potter's world and it's good to know more about many characters, some known and other only named in the series.
Today I started The Other Log of Phileas Fogg, an interesting story, with a mystery hidden behind the famous adventure. The plot intrigues me and I'm curious to discover this "other story".

The October Country by Ray Bradbury. Short story collection, with some solidly creepy ones so far ("The Emissary" "The Small Assassin").

Nicole Power (nicolepower) | 295 comments Today I read 'Beatrice and Virgil' by Yann Martel- I found it less interesting than Life of Pi as I was reading, but then when I finished I really appreciated that he was building that story to make the ending so powerful, and I ended up loving it just as much, 5/5 stars for both. The last segment is 13 pages called "Games for Gustav" that the entire book is prepping for, and it basically stabbed me in the heart, but it needed to be read twice because it deserved it.

I'm also re-reading Skeleton Key around shorter books. After reading It earlier this year and realizing it was 3000x better than I remembered from when I read it the first time as a teen, I want to re-read all the King books I read back then that I haven't read since. Really appreciating it, I had forgotten so much.

I don't know why, but I was always so fond of 'Here There Be Tygers' and I read it several times back then and it was just as I remembered. I had completely forgotten 'The Raft' and really enjoyed the ending. 'The Monkey' was way creepier than I remembered it and I loved that ending as well.

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments I'm really impressed by Ken Burns's PBS series on the Vietnam war so I'm going to dig into the one book that King wrote that dealt with that war (and many other things as well) HEARTS IN ATLANTIS. May not read it all, just review those chapters about it. Then I'll read/listen to Sleeping Beauties.

message 5038: by Clifton (new)

Clifton | 40 comments Just picked up a copy of Sleeping Beauties from my local library. Looking forward to it!

I must be about half way through and I'm really enjoying it. The more I read of it, the more I like it.
I guess you could say it has been a bit of a slow burn.

ElleEm | 260 comments I am rereading the Wolves of the Calla. I'm nearly half done. In my opinion this book is not of the same caliber (pardon the pun) of the rest of the Dark Tower books. I really can't figure out what it is about it but I just can't seem to love this one.

Nicole Power (nicolepower) | 295 comments Currently reading "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini. I'm about halfway through and I really love it! Great writing and very interesting characters.

I'm also halfway through "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe. It's interesting enough, but I'm not in love with the writing. Or characters. Or the plot. I'm not in love with it but I still intend to finish.

Scott Feighner | 9 comments I'm reading a novel called Dark Annie written by Joseph J. Christiano. It's a thriller/horror novel. This is my fourth read of the novel this month. The first three reads were to be familiar with he story. This fourth time is while I am recording the audiobook version.
