I read this about the same time I watched Top of the Lake on Netflix (which was good, and I just realized Kiala and Bonnie mentioned it in last month's hang out) but the two combined made me feel like men in general were villianized more than they deserved.

Did anyone else find Bettina to be a somewhat pathetic character? Is it because she was young and traumatized or is it just a trope in romance novels? I just found it odd that she is half demon half sorceress and throughout the entire book she needs to be propped up by others. When we see her first she has her power stripped from her, and though she regains it, it is through the actions of others. She really doesn't do anything to empower herself except rely on others. Does this go along with the virginal/damsel in distress trope?

Was the sappy, lovey language too much for anybody else? It made me want to throw up! There were waaaay too many uses of 'Dulcea Mea.'

Hey Ladies and Gents! It was pretty popular among the group that "Bettina" (Shadow's Claim) was a bad name, or at least, a poor choice for a main character.
My question is: If you were writing your own novel, what would you name your heroine and/or hero?
Amber wrote: "I really liked the modern references! Reminded me that this universe is not supposed to be seperate from ours. She lived in our world, experienced our culture...cheese and celebrities :)"While that may be true, I disliked it because if we read this book in twenty years, the modern references will date the book terribly. Especially in a series that takes place in a different world, mentioning pop culture will eventually prevent this book from having a timeless feel -- in my opinion, it already does.
I couldn't tune in for the live discussion. Is there a link where I can watch it today? I searched YouTube, but couldn't find Episode 18.

Traci -Not so far. We're hoping it didn't get lost, like an earlier one did (though they eventually found part of it) (or maybe repaired it?).
I'd intended to watch live, and just plain forgot. Sigh....

Interesting, I didn't look at it that way, but I can see what you mean. I wonder how Bettina's character will develop in the other books.

It looks like YouTube was not a fan of this month's books or something. The above links are broken, and I still can't find the episode either.

G&S just tweeted that YouTube ate the episode. Can someone post a recap for those of us who missed it (pretty please)?

Smashyface wrote: "G&S just tweeted that YouTube ate the episode. Can someone post a recap for those of us who missed it (pretty please)?"Awww, man. This is what I get for working a late shift. Was really looking forward to watching this episode today, too. Oh, well. :T
Crap...I wish the time was a little earlier for those of us not on the west coast. I look forward to watching, but I can't stay up due to work and have to watch the next day.

I see how this works: if I get up at 5am to watch the Hangout, YouTube works. If I don't- it doesn't. The fate of all future Hangouts obviously depends on my dedication to having wine for breakfast.

:( I had to work. So sad the episode gotten eaten. I almost never work past eight, but had to stay to midnight this week.

Thankyouthankyouthankyou!
Thank you so much! I missed it and was very sad because it's the first one I watch having read the books.

just sayin'... you guys make me proud to be a part of this community! :)thanks for creating so many copies of the hangout.
When I try the link, it says it doesn't exist. :( And I can't find it on the G&S channel either. Anyone?

Jenn wrote: "Premature posting. Searching at YT gave me the vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HD9tZ..."Apparently YouTube lost it. Fortunately I grabbed it and got it up for the time being. G&S is working with YouTube to recover the original with hopefully the original comments and stats. If there's a problem or it can't be recovered I've given G&S access to the video file I uploaded so they can post it on the official channel. I also sent them a file to forward to YouTube that contained the original location of all the .ts pieces. There were over 1000 video pieces (4-6 seconds each). Fortunately they were numbered so it was easy to stitch them back together.
The last time this happened, YouTube was able to recover all but the last 15-20 minutes. It also took over a week. Hope they do better this time.
Ah! I clicked on the link that was in someone's quote and I think that's why it didn't work...Looks like it was truncated. Doh.

Looks like they finally got it up on the official channel:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa_17D...
So even if you watched it on mine, go watch it again on theirs (and +like and share it). My copy is going private. I'd rather people watch the official copy, but I don't want to lose all those positive messages people left me on mine.
Thank you to everyone.
