Yes, we decided to try something new for 2018 and have one YA and one Adult BOM. And we rotate the subgenre for voting on one each month.
So, for example, January was voting on a subgenre for YA (Fantasy won) and February was voting on a subgenre for Adult.
We have had less interest in BOMs and more interest in challenges so we thought it was time for a change and to reduce the BOMs to free us up to make more team challenges :)

Do you mean this challenge Allegra? Its not locked. I do a lot of the welcoming and linking up challenge posts. I recently did yours.

Below is your challenge post.
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Anyway, I get that:
MC means Main Character.
Shelved means readers have put it on a public "shelf" with that label. (Where are these listed?)
When you give a link to a list, the chosen book must be on that list.
Words "in the Text" means anywhere in the book.
But:
I'm guessing Tagged is like other internet tags, but where do I find the tags for each book? Are there tags for every book?
I'm also fuzzy on MPG. Does that mean that the GR page for that book includes the word in question on the list on the right, labeled GENRES? Whether or not I agree, correct? And how are Tags different from Shelves different from Genres?
On any single challenge, can a book only ever be used once? I'm asking because some of these challenges have so many, often complicated tasks, I don't see how I'd ever complete them. (Of course, I'm excluding Scavenger Hunts here.)
And as long as I'm here, when a challenge uses covers (for colors, an object in the art, whether it's "ugly"), can I "shop" for the cover I'd like to use in the Other Editions list, or should I use what I get? As I often request from my library, I never know what edition I get so it's hard to hunt for valid titles.
Thanks for the remedial help
[If a reference would help, I'm mostly looking at the Humor Challenge, but others too]

Hi Allegra, I'm not sure what the context is for this question, but if a challenge wants you to read a book "shelved in June 2016" or whenever. . .
All you have to do to "shelve" a book is mark it "Want to Read" or "Read" or put it on ANY shelf you have created. Then you can go to "My Books," sort by "Date Added," and find a book that you shelved in June 2016 (or whenever).
I'm a little confused by your "public shelf" reference, because as far as I am aware, NONE of NBRC's reading challenges require that your account be "public." Some may require you to be friends with the Mod account, but you can participate in all (or perhaps most all?) of the challenges with a "private" account if you don't want everyone to be able to see you.
To explain Tags, Genres, and Shelves, please allow me to provide an example.
My most favorite book is Absolutely, Positively by Jayne Ann Krentz. This book is in the Romantic Suspense Genre, and I have it on my own specially-created Shelf for "genre-romantic-suspense." I don't use Tags - never have and don't know of a challenge that uses them - but Ab,Pos could be tagged #RomanticSuspense #Seattle #Contemporary #ReluctantPsychic . . .
For challenges that say "read a book that is shelved 'Urban Fantasy' on page one of 'Top Shelves'" or whatever, if you look at a book, on the right (if you're on a computer or using a browser app to view Goodreads on a mobile device) you'll see that most books (except for very new books and some books that not many people have read) have a "Genres" section. Underneath the short list that is there, you'll see a link to click to "See Top Shelves." The first page that opens after you click this link is the "page one of 'top shelves'" that is need for so many challenges.
My own shelves for Genres all are in the format "genre-urban-fantasy" or "genre-paranormal-romance," but many people just shelve things as Urban-Fantasy or Paranormal-Romance, and then their shelving is counted in amongst people who also shelved a book Urban-Fantasy or Paranormal-Romance.
(I have A LOT of shelves, though, so I wanted all of my genres to be grouped together, hence my labeling them "genre-xxx.")
Regarding how many times you can use a book in a challenge, most of the challenges require that you read one book per task. (So, for example, if I was doing a spell-it-out for BANANA, I could NOT use Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman for the two Ns (N for Neverwhere and N for Neil). I'd have to read a second "N" book.)
The only ones I know of where the same book can be used multiple times are some of the Scavenger Hunt challenges. (For challenges like "CYOA - Flowers," I could use the same book for "lily" "rose" "tulip" "violet" if one book had all of these words in it.)
Some challenges are set up so that you can earn Coins. If you want a coin, I believe you can use a book for the challenge you're doing (i.e, "Flowers") and ONLY for that challenge. If you use the same book for both "Flowers" and "Duos," you would not be eligible for a coin for either "Flowers" or "Duos."
And for cover challenges, I believe the creators want you to use the cover you read. So, for instance, if the challenge is for a "cover that is 50% or more yellow," the edition YOU read would have to be "50% or more yellow." This is, admittedly, sometimes a pain, but a little searching can usually find one a book that fits.
That said, though, SOME challenges may be okay with you counting another edition for that challenge's tasks. It's important to always read the Challenge Rules, because they usually tell you exactly what the requirements are. :-)
I hope that the above helps. ???

I set up my challenge list in the 'member's reading list'. I think this is right and that's what is supposed to go here?
For all the choose your own adventure - these are open and can be started anytime, the duration is open as well?
Do we choose a word from EVERY letter of the alphabet for spell it out words?
Quarterly - for approximate two - three months begin with my start date. Is it too late to join in or wait until a new one?
Monthly - is it too late to join in for July or do I wait until August?
Specifically the NetGally July - Can I join in late? I've just finished one two days ago and am starting another today.
I think that will get me started! You weren't kidding when you say 'nothing but challenges'! Wow! There are sooo many!
I love how open many of the challenges are! From easy to very complex, some are over my head, if I'm honest! Give me time, though, I'll figure it out!
This is so fun and I'm so glad I discovered you!!
Thanks!

Yes, you put your challenge list in the correct spot
Yes to the Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA )questions
No, you can choose which words you wish to spell out. There are instructions in each CYOA for the spell it out option
Quarterly-it is not too late
Monthly- it is not too late.
Netgally- no its not too late
We are happy that you are having fun exploring our group! Enjoy the challenges. Be sure to check out the monthly newsletter that comes around each month to your inbox.

No problem!

I'm very good at cross pollinating multiple challenges with the same books but I want to make sure I follow the rules for this group!
After all, the goal it to finish them all WITHOUT cheating! LOL
I have 15 challenges going right now!
How's that for fun, yeah?!!!
More Q's
Forgot to ask about using the same books for different challenges within this group and across all GR groups: So
Q. #1 Can I use the same book for different challenges in this group?
ie. Use the same books for my zoology CYOA and a Monthly, Quarterly, etc.?
Q. #2 I'm using chosen books in other GR groups can I use them for challenges in this group?
I think you answered this as YES already.
Q. #1 I read somewhere that if you're doing CYOA challenges you can NOT use the same books if you want to do multiple CYOA challenges at the same time?
ie: I'm doing Zoology CYOA- Spell-it-out.
If I wanted to do CYOA in Harry Potter, I can NOT use the same books for both, correct?
Q. #2 Can I do different OPTIONS in the multiple CYOA challenges?
I'm doing spell it out in Zoology. Can I do the zoology covers at the same time using different books?
Q. #3 Can I do CYOA Zoology
OPTION 3: spell it out
AND
OPTION 1: Find animals on the cover at the same time?
As long as the books for each are completely separate?
If not - once I complete one spell it out, can I then change to covers?
Q. #3 As for earning coins at least in the CYOA challenges :
To Earn a Sapphire Coins:
Sapphire Coin One Coin upon reaching highest book level
ie (Bull Shark) 25+ = 1 coin?
If I set up 3 or more seperate parts @ Bull Shark (A, B, C, etc ) do I earn 1 coin for each 25+ books? = 3 coins with parts a, b, c?
Q. #4 Do most of these rules essentially apply for all CYOA challenges?
ie Option 3: Harry Potter Spell-it-Out
Cursed Child : 25+ books = 1 coin
I think those are all the questions for now! I'm only doing the CYOA challenges for now.
Later on, of course, the questions will fly for the harder challenges!
Now that I'm here, I don't think I'll need to add anymore gr groups to challenge my challenge skills, that's for sure!!
You're not kidding when you say nothing but challenges! This group is amazing! There are many challenges that are a bit confusing and over my head at the moment, if I'm honest!
Give me time, though, I like to learn new ways to 'challenge' myself so once I finish some of my current ongoing challenges ( 15 )
I'll have more time to learn the more difficult ones!
Questions, questions... The list goes on! LOL! =o)
Thanks for the wonderful help! I really appreciate it! I like answering questions in my other groups for new members as I think it takes the pressure off of just floundering around. It makes it more fun once you get the hang of it! I've only been doing challenges two years so I'm still new to it but we all have to start somewhere!

age to track the challenges we participating in?

You sure can. Its not neccesary to a part of a team. The teams you speak of are already formed, it was a Harry Potter themed group challenge in which teams received extra points for reading and participating in the monthly reads..
Enjoy the book of the month!!

Discussion questions (if you read the first few posts of the BOM thread it will explain everything to you)

Thank you! I want to participate in BOM of November but.. everyone has teams here and there, how does it work then?

Don't worry about the teams. There is a team challenge starting Oct 27 which people are referring to.
You don't need to be in the team challenge to join the BOM :)
Just come along on the day it is set to start, and someone will post discussion questions and different periods for you to comment/respond to and get conversation going :)

Hi Heather - no we don’t have blanket rules. If there are anything specific then it will be written in the rules for the challenge.
Have fun!
Have fun!

What does MPG mean?
Also, how can I use color or bold fonts to my posts? I tried ..., but it didn't work. Am I supposed to have any other coding in the comment?
Thanks.
Hey Sarah - welcome!
MPG is main page genre. So when you go to a book on the right hand side are usually 2-3 genres listed. They are the “main page genres”
In terms of colours, goodreads is not that fancy and allows limited HTML. So you can only use colours by using an image - no coloured text (unless that has changed recently and I’m unaware) for bold you need to use this tag - without the spaces -
< b >
And to turn off
< / b >
Again without the spaces
We have a folder in the group called “goodreads 101” with lots of tips for goodreads HTML

Oh you mean the book links? You can do that in the comment box at the top to the right it says “add book/author”.
I haven’t seen any coloured text - if it’s not the link you mean maybe it is something to do with the app you have? I know that when I use the app I can use smiley faces like 😀 but not on the desktop version

In march I found out about this really cool challange, but it seems it runs only on twitter or blogs and I can't find no thread dedicated to it on Goodreads.
It's called Year of the Asian Reading Challenge, it runs from jan - dec 2019 and its all about reading as many books by asian authors as you can. More informations here: https://thequietpond.com/2019/01/15/w...
It would be really fun to try it out although we are already in april.

Does anyone know a way to easily search book covers for specific items? Is there a website that can do this easily?
TIA!

Thank you! I never thought to use listopia.
Yes, we intend to launch it later this year. If you turn on notifications for this thread:

I've put myself on a book buying ban because I really need to read the books I already own lol! I'm allowed to buy one book after reading 25 books from my owned TBR. Are there any challenges that are similar to this?
Thanks in advance :)

Yesterday I signed up for a challenge in Challenges by our Members, and I wanted to sign up for another. (Like the 3-D Challenge). Now I can't find that category. Where is it, please?

Perhaps the index is the best place to start? You can find it here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
