Choose Your Own Adventure

Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) is a new series of challenges coming to NBRC. Initially, at least 26 challenges are planned for CYOA and will be released either monthly and/or bi-monthly (twice a month).

Each CYOA will feature a new topic. Within the topic will be at least 6 options to choose from, on how you may do the challenge. For example, you could chose to do a spell-it-out or a scavenger hunt. The purpose of the CYOA challenges is to give multiple choices to each challenge on how they can be done. What you do is up to you! Choose Your own Challenge!

Each CYOA will feature at least these options ~

- Spell-it-Out*
(*)Spell-it-Out Rules
Using the first letter in the book’s title, the first letter of the series name, the first letter in the author’s first or last name, or the first letter of a character’s first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter in the audiobook narrators first or last name.
If you are reading a translated version, you can also use the first letter of the translator's first or last name.

- Word List Freestyle
Using any term(s) listed in the Word List, choose to read books with Covers or Titles that reflect the term(s) chosen. Examples are given within each Adventure.

- Scavenger Hunt Freestyle**
Pick a level and find the words, in the Word List, in the books you read. There is no limit to the number of words per book. **Will accept Plurals of the word, but no other variation. Only exact word or exact word that is plural will be accepted!

- Scavenger Hunt Want-it-All**
The same Freestyle, but you must find at least one word from each letter grouping (i.e., one word from A, B, C, D etc.) **Will accept Plurals of the word, but no other variation. Only exact word or exact word that is plural will be accepted!

At least TWO other random options will be available and will change adventure to adventure. Examples are given when the challenge may not be clear.

Book Restrictions for CYOA Challenges

--> Books with page counts of over 100 pages
--> Re-Reads count if it's been over 6 months since last read
--> Any readable format counts (paper, digital, audio)
--> Picture books not allowed, MG allowed if YA is also listed
--> No Graphic Novels / Manga allowed

Cait S | 2825 comments First, THANK YOU for this. You have no idea how much doing in-text scavenger hunts helps me push through reading slumps and how much fun I have doing them. So I genuinely really appreciate this added option to challenges.

Now for the question! During scavenger hunts, how exact do we need to be with the words? For example, if I'm looking for "constellation", is "constellations" okay? Plurals, possessives, etc or does the work need to be exactly the same as it's given?

Thanks again!

I'm glad you like it Cait! I know that a lot of people like doing challenges a lot of different ways, so I wanted to do a series of challenges that provide many ways of doing them.

I'm going to accept Plurals only. No other variations. Aside from Plurals, it needs to be exact word. I'll add that to the rules here now and try to remember to add it to the rest as I post them.

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) | 463 comments Query: When you say picture books, I assume this also means graphic novels? I'm reading Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft so just won't use that for this if that is the case.

I honestly hadn't decided on Graphic Novels / Manga. After talking it over among the other mods, we decided no on GN / Manga. So sorry!

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) | 463 comments No worries! I just always want to be sure before I use something like that for anything. :)

Ruth (ruthie1) Question. In spell outs. What can you use? Book title, author first and last initial? Thanks?

Cait S | 2825 comments Hi again!

For the Astronomy scavenger hunt, solar is listed twice. Should we find it two separate times? Does this affect the book at all, like we should find it in different books instead of "as many words per book as possible"?

Thanks! Sorry to be a pain lol

message 18: by Moderators of NBRC, Challenger-in-Chief (new)

Moderators of NBRC | 33496 comments Mod
Not a pain at all, and well spotted!! I took these words from a word list. Didn't expect them to mess it up! :)

I just took the first solar out, so now it's just solar & solar system there. So 199 words to find, rather than 200.

Hope that works!

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 1469 comments Now that there are several of these challenges up, do we have to use different books for each of the challenges or can we use the same book across the challenges?

NancyHelen wrote: "Now that there are several of these challenges up, do we have to use different books for each of the challenges or can we use the same book across the challenges?"

It's meant to be different books for each challenge, but since this is a personal challenge, and not a team challenge, however you wanna go about it will work.

Unless you want to earn Gem Coins. I'd say if you want to earn the Gem Coins for the challenges, then they need to be different books because the Coins aren't supposed to be too easy to earn. :)

message 22: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 2825 comments Does that mean that if we're doing scavenger hunts we can only find words for one of the challenges per book if we want the gems?

Cait wrote: "Does that mean that if we're doing scavenger hunts we can only find words for one of the challenges per book if we want the gems?"

No, that would be unfair, with near 100 or more words. See each 1st post for what you need for the scavenger hunt. What I decided on to get Gem Coins for the scavenger hunt is that you need to use at least 10% of the word total as your book count. So, for Astronomy, it's 199 words, you would need to use at least 19 books (I said rounded down was fine) for the Gem Coins. BUT, you do need to find ALL the words! :D

message 25: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 2825 comments Okay, cool. That makes sense. I was just like Ohhhhhhhh that's so much stuff to delete-- lol But that works out. Thanks!

Are the Gem Coins going to matter for the team challenge that's coming in June?

Because I don't want to read a book for Astronomy, a different book for Big Bang, and a third book for Circus & Carnival, and then a fourth/fifth/sixth book for the next CYOA challenges. I read fairly fast (a book every second day and sometimes everyday) but that's too much work for me. Especially since the challenges are long and I'm still working on reading 52 books for my Astronomy Spell-It-Out. (Only had 26 as of April 30.)

Gem Coins are just rewards, they won't come into play for the team challenge except perhaps earning them, if the individual mods want to use them. Otherwise, no, they will have nothing to do with Wobble.

Great! Thank you! That frees me up to do what I wish for the CYOAs (i.e.: read books to fit for potentially all of them, lol) and then I can worry about the team challenge when it gets here. Thank you!!!

message 29: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 1469 comments I'm happy to read different books - seeing we can play this at our own pace. I'm always up for earning pixel prizes, so if it means not using books across challenges, I'm game! It's supposed to be challenging after all!

Jen (reader44ever) | 2930 comments Will we get a new CYOA challenge today? It's been two weeks since the last one was released. :-)

It was one of the many great ideas Karsyn brought to the group, and we continued her original concept. I'm not sure what will happen after we reach the Z, I'm guessing something awesome :D

That's hysterical. I didn't even notice that they were in alphabetical order. I think it's because when I signed up, I got to sign up for a bunch at once so didn't notice the order they were originally released in. At least we are only almost halfway through the alphabet, so that gives me time to enjoy them for now.

Haley (haleymadd) | 376 comments For Peer Pressure

Do we have to write the page numbers where we found our words? Or just the book we found them in?

Can "not to fear waves" work for don't make waves?

message 39: by Moderators of NBRC, Challenger-in-Chief (new)

Moderators of NBRC | 33496 comments Mod
Sorry for the delay....

You can interchange similar meaning phrases, so in your example, the answer would be no as "not to fear waves" wouldn't have the same meaning as "don't make waves."

It would be helpful if you list he page number or kindle location.

HI Viji,
sorry for the late response. Any book you read must have one of the tags ( mystery, crime or legal thriller ) on the MPG not all three. Does that make sense and help?

Hi Reed. I'm not sure what problem you are having understanding this. Have you read the first post?
If not, please go back and do so, as the first post in our challenge threads will set out the rules and requirements.
If you still have a question after that, come back with a specific question and we'll be able to help you

as an aside, please can you use the standard GR font as that is easiest for everyone, especially non-native English speakers, to read! Thanks!

Daniel Hanson-Brown (dozerpup711) | 224 comments Hello, I’m new and Have a question and a need for clarification.

First the question: if we want to do both a book (like a spell out) AND a Scavenger Hunt challenge to get both coins can we? Of course choosing one or the other pet book, not both.

And for clarification: I LOVE scavenger hunts and of course will do them all eventually. Am I correct in understanding from above that we must use a total number of books that is equal to at least 10% of the number of words on the list? (ie. 180 words = must use 18 books)

message 47: by Robin (new)

Robin (readerlyrobin) | 132 comments Hi! I'm new to these kinds of challenges (specifically the Scavenger Hunt options) and I have two questions:

1. When trying to earn gem coins, is the "use at least 10% of the word total as your book count" rule applicable to all Scavenger Hunt options for the CYOA challenges? This rule is listed explicitly on some challenges and not others.

2. For the "only accepting plurals and no other variations on the words" rule, does this work in the other direction? Meaning, could I find a singular version of a plural word (apple instead of apples for example)?

Deanie Nelder | 124 comments Hi. Looking for some clarification. What about verb tenses/conjugations? If the word is "crouch" can I use "crouched?" Thanks.
