Are you sure it was the cat and not the cat's owner who was named Eglinton (or maybe Eglantine)? In Bedknobs and Broomsticks there's a woman named Eglantine Price and she has a cat. Or it might be one of the two books this was based on, Mary Norton's The Magic Bedknob and Bonfires and Broomsticks.
