Antonomasia It was about an A5 size and fairly thick and heavy. No dustjacket, a shiny hardback. The sort of thing you might have found in large newsagents rather than proper bookshops.

I can remember the cover: a girl (white, with shortish brown hair) wearing a striped leotard, sweatband and possibly legwarmers, smiling, sitting in a sort of squat pose. She may have had a cat with her, and in the background was a grid or pattern of stuff that girls were supposed to be interested in, like rollerskates, cooking equipment etc.
The title was, I think at the top and one of its words was in a coloured circle.

The title was fairly patronising with some sort of reference to it being stories for girls or a book for girls. All or most of it was short stories but I wouldn't swear that there wasn't some non-fiction material in it too.

The only story I can now remember individually was about a girl who met some local boys who were in a band, possibly after school or whilst bunking off school, and at some point there was a scene of a picnic by a river. The girl was a classical musician and at one point, one of the boys told her something about the structure of some rock songs (not sure if it was one of his own songs, or a famous band's songs) being influenced by Beethoven, and she starts listening to more pop music. It's possible the band were slightly famous and the girl didn't recognise them because she only listened to classical, and her friends later met her with them and were very impressed. These are just a couple of scenes; I can't recall the whole plot.

There are a lot of listings for old books of stories for girls published by Hamlyn. It's possible it was one of theirs but I can't find pics of any 80's covers to check.

The stories had B&W line drawn illustrations which featured slightly older fashions so the book could have been a reprint from the 70's or so.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Is it that particular story you want to find, or the whole book? Because the story sounds familiar to me, as if it's also been in a different anthology or maybe it's an excerpt from a children's or YA novel I read long time ago. And if it's not the whole book you need, we can focus our search on the story itself...

Antonomasia Either is interesting!

I ordered a likely looking Bumper Book of Girls Stories pub. 1978 which was very cheap, in case it was a reprint of that.

I can't exactly remember why, but I'm positive the story about the boy in the band was set in England not America.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Well if that's not the book you remember, maybe something in it will jog your memory a bit. I'll keep thinking, and please come back to bump, esp. if you have new info. :)

Antonomasia The book arrived but it wasn't the right one.

The story content was for younger kids - nearly all fairytale type stuff. The sort of thing you probably don't get much of new these days, where it's at a reading standard you wouldn't associate with that sort of material now, either because of dumbing down or because older children would still have been interested in that kind of story 30+ years ago.

Antonomasia Oh wow. You star. The background of my copy had more white in it, but that's evidently just a different edition of the same thing. Thank you so much!!

How did you find it?

So, this is the book. Congrats on finding it Antonomasia. I'll shelve this and move the thread to Solved for you.

Hum, ok, forget shelving the book. We don't have it listed on GR, and Amazon no longer allows us to connect to their web-site. So, I'll just move the thread.

Antonomasia--if you do decide to get a copy, could you please email me so that I can let you know what stats we would need to post it on GR?

Antonomasia I can do it as I'm a librarian (though an exhausted one... shouldn't have got sucked into an afternoon of disambiguating and sorting Richard Burtons...)

So I will send a message when it's on, but it's not going to be today.

Amazon data is now allowed again - there's a thread in the Librarians' Group.

Railyn (funky-rat) | 243 comments I just went over to Amazon.uk and searched for "hamlyn for girls" and scanned the covers. This one has apparently been re-printed a number of times since, so that's probably why you couldn't find it.
