Barb Well, there are two Ns in the phrase, since they added "NBRC" to it, and at this point in time, I only have one N book, so Jane's book may help us out when all is said and done :)

message 102: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Well, there you go :)

message 103: by Barb (new)

Barb I know some folks are kind of freaking out about this challenge, but I'm actually excited about it :) I think it's going to be a lot of fun, and I can't wait to get started!

message 104: by Jane (new)

Jane | 206 comments I totally agree Barb. I am also looking forward to this challenge. It seemed a bit overwhelming in the start but when I started looking Behind Enemy Lines I was having fun.

Also I am not always very organised in what I want to read next so it is quite fun that I now have my next 10 books decided and a reading plan for when I want to be finished with each book.

message 105: by Jane (new)

Jane | 206 comments It is stil the finishing date that count for the book, isn't it? So If I start a book tomorrow it is okay as long as I don't finish it till after or on the 1st of June.

message 106: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Me too!

Yes, Jane, finished date is what counts. I might start one too if I finish what I'm reading now, as I don't want to start something else this close to a challenge!

It's really actually not so bad at all! :)

message 107: by Barb (new)

Barb Jane wrote: "I am not always very organised in what I want to read next so it is quite fun that I now have my next 10 books decided and a reading plan for when I want to be finished with each book. "

I am definitely NOT a planner when it comes to figuring out what books to read when LOL Every time I try to plan, I end up deviating so badly from the original list that most times, I just don't bother. But because this challenge actually dovetails pretty well with some of my others, I had to *try to plan.

It's usually library holds that arrive for me that throw off my plan, so I tried to work those into my list for the next couple of weeks. We'll see how it goes :)

message 108: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) You need backups for your backups!

message 109: by Barb (new)

Barb Yes LOL And it's a good thing I didn't wait for my planned book #9 to arrive! It showed up this afternoon -- and it's only 125 pages long!! I wouldn't have been able to count it for the Tower challenge ... in fact, it won't count for ANY of the challenges I'm doing, it's too short *sigh*

message 110: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) OH NOES! :(

message 111: by Barb (new)

Barb Eh, I'll hang on to it for one of those challenges that specifically tells me to read a short book :)

message 112: by Barb (last edited May 31, 2013 05:05PM) (new)

Barb Just so you all know: I've just gone through my reading list and my other challenges, and as long as I can keep up with the reading itself, I should be able to cover all of the letters in option #5 except one C, one N, one R, the B and the D. Yes I know that's more than the 21 books allowed, but I wanted to leave myself some wiggle room.

The point of this: It's not likely we'll need any other books for this spelling option, so if you guys will concentrate on the other options, we'll be good :)

message 113: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Go Barb go!

message 114: by Jane (new)

Jane | 206 comments What are the ahead and behind colours for us this first month? I know we aren't doing them as such but if we have a book that fits and is not needed for the other options maybe we can just add it and see how it goes.

message 115: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) I don't remember! I'll check when I get to my computer in a bit -- and send your gift card :)

Mango Tango: Ahead - Radical Red. Behind - Purple Mt's Majesty.

message 117: by Barb (new)

Barb Ooooh, red and purple should be relatively easy :) Remember to make a note of that when you post your book in the book reporting thread. Who knows? Maybe we'll get seven of those without even trying :)

message 118: by Jane (new)

Jane | 206 comments I have added my first book. Even though it is intended for #1 I have listed all the places I think it goes, in case we (read Steven) want to change books around at a later date for finishing different categories.

The next book I am reading fits colour ahead which I didn't know when I chose it LOL.

Lucky, Jane.

message 120: by Barb (new)

Barb Thanks for the reminder, Jane! I forgot that one of the books I finished today works for Color Ahead :)

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) Ok for my addition to the 7% solution...ive got Dracula by Bram Stoker covered....Sheila let me know if you have a book started - there are so many different threads Im afraid that I will miss something...
Steven or Barb which books qualify for the Group reads that is which shelves...

message 122: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Only the Round II shelf (tower team and/or color one :P )

message 123: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Sallie, you and Sheila can both read the same book and it still counts twice, since you both read it. ;)

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) ok thanks Steven....this all gets so confusing when you are not on the threads every min of the day - with being gone since Fri - Ive been a little out of touch that it was little overwhelming when I jumped back in this evening...whew glad I have you to keep me straight & Barb...y'all rock

message 125: by Barb (new)

Barb Don't hesitate to ask questions if you're not sure. We don't want you to read something because you think it qualifies only to find out when you're done that it doesn't count!

If we don't know the answer, we'll find out :)

message 126: by Diane L (new)

Diane L Just posted the last of my books already in progress when the challenge started. On to my regularly scheduled reading for this challenge. Started C. S. Lewis's The Magician's Nephew for #7.

message 127: by Barb (new)

Barb Go Evana! I've barely touched a book since Friday -- lots of family stuff going on -- but I hope to read a bit more today before the kids arrive this afternoon.

message 128: by Steven (last edited Jun 03, 2013 08:44AM) (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) I've been so crazy busy... I really need to get some reading time before I crack!

But the good thing is, we're already 9 books in. :) And only 3 days into the challenge... 18.4% done!

message 129: by Barb (new)

Barb Go us :)

message 130: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) I know, right?

I wish I had gotten more of Hobbit read this weekend!

message 131: by Karla (new)

Karla I am going to be crazy busy with work this week. Friday or Saturday I will add the books I read this week to the book thread, including the one I finished, Bounce. I'm just too tired to do it now.

message 132: by Barb (new)

Barb For those who are doing the buddy reads for this challenge:

I asked for clarification in the mods' "official" thread about what needs to be done to get credit for these. There are a few key points:

(1) The buddy read needs to be set up in the NBRC group, so that *all NBRC member can participate.

(2) It can be an existing BR, or you can set up a new one. If you do a new one, YOU will have to come up with the section breakdowns AND the discussion questions!

(3) You don't have to answer ALL of the discussion questions, but you should answer "most" of them. Your responses need to be "thoughtful," not just a sentence or two saying "Yeah, I agree. I didn't like that either!"

(4) In your post in our reporting thread, you need to include links to each comment you made in the BR discussion thread. If you don't know how to create a link to a specific post, you can ask for help, or you can indicate the message #s instead of providing links. (For instance, my comments on this page are in messages #101, 103, 107, 109...) If you provide only the message #, you MUST include a link to the discussion at large.

Hope that helps :)

message 133: by Deedee (last edited Jun 03, 2013 09:35PM) (new)

Deedee Hi -- am I too late to join in?

I've finished my first book of June:
The Earl by Cecelia Holland
The Earl (1971) by Cecelia Holland

5. “T.O.W.E.R. T.E.A.M.S. R.E.A.D.I.N.G. C.H.A.L.L.E.N.G.E.”

I fit letters C,E,H

Sorry for the misunderstanding, Barb. They do NOT have to do both. Just one or the other: section breaks or DQs, if someone is posting them.

Deedee, you are not too late to join; however, Magenta Mix-up's thread for the 7% Solution is here .

message 136: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilalynn) | 21 comments Ok quick question- what are section breaks? And just to be super clear. If I am doing a buddy read and what it to count I have to write questions or I only have to answer most of the questions with thoughtful answers.

Thanks for the help!

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
Shelia, "section breaks" are designated stopping places where you discuss the book thus far. You can decide these as a group where these are going to be located.

Chapters are often the most helpful, as people use different types of media. Some people also go by percent.

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) Hey everyone - I finished Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness 06.04.2013 & absolutely loved it - although the ending left me with a cliffhanger - I hate those - now I have to read Book 3 just to see how this all ends....not sure where this fits in the scheme of things so please add it where it will help

message 139: by Barb (new)

Barb It would be really helpful if you could post your book here, Sallie 7% Solution Completed Books Only!

If you could follow the example in message #5 in that thread, that would be even better :)

It looks to me like your book counts for Option #5: S (in the title), D or H (author's name) and for Option #7: 7 letters in the author's first name. It may have enough purple on the cover to count for Option #3: color behind. If you could add all of that to your post, it would help Steven a LOT, thanks!

message 140: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Ladies,

PLEASE pay attention to what you're reading and POST YOUR BOOKS.

Lisa, your read on 6/1 (The Midnight Breed Companion) has a big moon on the cover and counts for your May Read-a-thon books.

Karla, you've posted a purple book (Color Behind) and a green book (your May RaT category).

Evana, you've posted a book that starts with E (which fits SEVENUP for your sevens).

We're adding books for this challenge but they're getting lost because they're not being posted in the "I finished this book" thread and I'm finding them when doing book checks.

I'm helping run the cupcake puzzle posting (leaving Barb doing these puzzles solo) AND doing all the tracking for the team AND for the 7% challenges and stuff... so if you guys could make it easier on me a little a make sure you post the books and find options for them to go places, that would be awesome. I've not been able to read as much the past week because there's so much tracking to do and extra work from digging through stuff!

AND KEEP READING! We've been stuck in around 7th place for a few weeks now, and we gotta push and catch up!

Thanks everyone! We are going to rock the 7% challenge and we can rock the main challenge toooooo!!!

message 141: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) As a quick update,

We've read 20 books that count for the challenge! That's 40.82% of the 49 books we need *IN LESS THAN FIVE DAYS!*

We've also got enough books to complete one category (One Spell It Out)... but we're not going to post it to the completion thread because we might want to move some around.

We're also close on some other categories.

Check it out here: tracking spreadsheet.

message 142: by Barb (last edited Jun 05, 2013 09:43AM) (new)

Barb I spent several hours last week planning most of my books for the next five weeks to fit category 5 for this challenge (the NBRC Tower Team Reading Challenge spell out) AND to coordinate with challenges I'm doing in other groups, so if you could all concentrate on the *other categories, that would be a HUGE help. Otherwise, if you take the slots in the spell out category, my books won't count and we could fall short of our overall goal. Because of the other challenges, I'm committed to these books, so I "have" to read them, whether they count for the 7% challenge or not.

I know it's all just for fun, and it really doesn't matter overall whether we win this Tower challenge or not, but it would be nice to know we've given it our best shot :)

message 143: by Jane (new)

Jane | 206 comments Most of my books are chosen for Behind Enemy Lines but there will be a couple of books for other challenges that will just have to be put where needed.
Also I am trying to listen to audiobooks and those books are not for anything but my audiobook challenge.
Then one category I won't be doing is BOMs/Buddy Reads.
If others read some books for BEL it is okay as I think some of the ones I have on my list could be for colour instead.

I have done a couple of the puzzles but never got around to posting them. Do the puzzles need to be done by a certain day or can I after the 19th go and add any of them and they will count?

message 144: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Jane, just post anything you read in the POSTING thread, and I'll take the ones you mark as BEHIND ENEMY LINES and assign them there.

We can definitely use some color books (red and purple for those categories) as well.

You don't need to worry about Buddy Reads/BOMs. Sallie and Sheila are working on that category, and we'll have plenty of overflow in other categories as well. :)

The puzzles can be done at any point BEFORE the end of the 7% challenge (and you don't really NEED to redo any of the previous ones, as they've already been turned in).

message 145: by Jane (new)

Jane | 206 comments I will just keep reading and posting. Hoping to finish a book tonight.

message 146: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Yay!

I finished one today too. :)

message 147: by Barb (new)

Barb Jane wrote: "I have done a couple of the puzzles but never got around to posting them. Do the puzzles need to be done by a certain day or can I after the 19th go and add any of them and they will count? "

The puzzles that would be most beneficial to us in the long run, if you can do them, are the ones that have to be emailed to the mod account. We get "blinkie" cupcakes for EACH PERSON who emails those before the end of the challenge, and those blinkie cupcakes are even more useful to us :) The puzzles that ask us to post our answer in the puzzle thread earn us only one regular cupcake per puzzle, no matter how many people complete them.

I think the cupcakes are the most complicated part of this whole challenge! They were fun in the RaT when everyone was doing them just for FUN, but now that they have value attached to them, I feel almost obligated to spend time doing them, to help the team as much as possible.

message 148: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) We only get ONE cupcake EVEN on the mail in ones! But more people doing them gives us more options for USING the blinkies.

message 149: by Barb (new)

Barb Ah ok ... I misunderstood that part too, apparently *sigh* But it still has the potential to help us if more than one person on our team emails the correct answer, right?

message 150: by Jane (new)

Jane | 206 comments I will look into it then. :-)
