Steven (gallifreyan1218) ~ Seven Percent Solution ~
For seven weeks in June and July, the challenge we put forward to all the Teams is 7%! If only one Team completes this task, we will award them seven (7) additional books/points. If it is split, as it was for May, we will award each Team reaching the goal four (4) additional books/points. Any Team that completes at least three (3) of the following categories, for a total of 21 books, will receive a one (1) book advantage.

There are 12 months in a year. Since the main goal is to reach is 1350, and you want to stay on track, that means you need to read 112.5 books a month. We’ll round down to 112, because seven divides so nicely into it. We’ll give you a little leeway and set the goal as a little less than half your Team’s books - at 49 - plus give you an extra couple weeks. Works out to be a book a day. ☺

It is NOT mandatory that all Team Members participate. You may do this challenge as a Team, or have only one member do it. Yes, one member may do one book or some or all seven books from one category. For example, one member may read, for Category #2 Color of the Team Ranked Ahead, three books and leave the remaining four for their other Team Members.

In addition, if a Team Member says they are NOT going to participate due to time constraints or lack of interest, but a watchful Captain or Co-Captain notices that one of their books applies towards a challenge category, said Captain/Co-Captain may use the book.

GOAL: Your Team’s mission is to read 49 books. That would be seven books from a choice of seven categories. Yes, you may read 14 books from one category that you adore (essentially doing it twice), and ignore another completely. However, you may NOT read two books from one category and five from another to equal seven. Nor, if you are doing a category twice, read 10 from one and four from another.

DURATION: June 1 - July 19, 2013. You have seven weeks to complete this challenge. This would only include any book finished in that time period.

1. “Behind Enemy Lines”: Go “Behind Enemy Lines” and have some of your members read books that are from the enemies’ bookshelves. Yes, more than one person may read the same book. Please state the Team and person from whose shelf you are stealing.

2. Color Ahead: Read books with a cover that has a predominant color of the Team ranked ahead of you in the last Sunday Update of May or June. If your Team is ranked first, then use the color of the Team ranked last.

3. Color Behind: Read books with a cover that has a predominant color of the Team ranked just behind you in the last Sunday Update of May or June. If your Team is ranked last, then use the color of the Team ranked first.

4. Book of the Month or “Buddy Read”: Read books that is a NBRC BOM or “buddy read” AND participate in the posting Discussion Questions. (Please check with Mod running the discussion about the day’s DQs for which you want to volunteer.) Yes, you may ask to have a “buddy read” set-up for a particular book. It must be posted in the regular NBRC group, under the alphabetical authors’ listings, and includes the regular NBRC members not involved in the Tower Teams Reading Challenge. You may all read the same book, or pick and choose which ones you want to read, or from those already designated.

5. Spell-It-Out: Read books whose title, author’s (first or last), or series name would spell “T.O.W.E.R. T.E.A.M.S. R.E.A.D.I.N.G. C.H.A.L.L.E.N.G.E.” You may ignore the indefinite and definite articles (a, an, and, the), if that helps. Special Note: You can ONLY use a letter as many times as it occurs. For example, you may have two people read a book with a title, author or series name that starts with “T,” but you may NOT have three people doing so. Yes, you only have to do seven books. Unless you choose to do it twice, or even thrice, in which case you still MAY NOT repeat the letters, unless they are repeated in the spelling.

6. From May’s R-a-T Mini Challenges: Read books with a predominantly green color; or have a flower on the cover; or are set in a favorite holiday destination; or have a moon on the cover; or have a iconic landmark or monument on the cover; or would spell out “A.N.Y. R.O.S.E.” (same rules apply as for #5). Yes, you may count one book that has a flower, one that has a landmark, and one that helps spell “any rose” to reach a combined total of seven (7) books.

7. Seven: Read books that have seven words in the title. You may include the series name, or not, and you may ignore the indefinite and definite articles (a, an, and, the), whichever is to your benefit. Or read books that are the seventh book in a series. Or are written by an author with seven letters in their first, last, or combined names - and initials, if that helps. Or you may read books, that total seven words with the title, series name, and author combined. (Example: Summer Knight, The Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher.) Or read a book that was originally published in the seventh month (July). Or you may spell out “S.E.V.E.N. U.P.” using the same spell-it-out criteria mentioned above.

REPEATING: Please note that Category #5 is the only category you may repeat three times, and ignore two other categories. All others, you may repeat twice, and choose to ignore one other category.

Please Note: Once you have posted a category as finished, that is it. NO SWAPPING AROUND BOOKS, ONCE A CATEGORY IS POSTED.

Steven (gallifreyan1218) You can check out more info here:

Moderator's 7%

PLEASE POST ALL BOOKS HERE: MANGO TANGO BOOK POST THREAD FOR 7% CHALLENGE

Link for Steven to post completed categories: Update Post

Category Assignments:
Behind Enemy Lines - Jane
Book of the Month/Buddy Reads - Sheila and Sallie
Spell-It-Out - Barb
May Read-a-thon "stuff" - Karla
May Read-a-thon "stuff" - Lisa
Seven - Evana
Seven - Steven

We can do the two color categories if we want to, but that one is more complicated in my opinion, as the colors will change each week with the leaderboard, so it'll be harder to plan ahead.

I think we will be able to get more than 49 books read, and might be able to finish all the categories, and some of them multiple times. But this is our "main plan" for now. Now, if (for example) Barb finishes her Spell-It-Out once, and then finishes it again before another category is done (as she's planned out enough spelling for her other challenges to knock it out THREE TIMES! GO BARB!), then I'll probably count that first just so we're closer to finishing! :)

I'll be doing as the mods mentioned and monitoring EVERYONE'S books to see where they fit in.

Please let me know if you're not comfortable with your category or would rather do something else or if something comes up and you can't get yours done, etc.

And you reserved seven spots! I'm so impressed, Steven. ☺

message 11: by Barb (new)

Barb So I guess our first step is to figure out who on our team is willing/able to participate, right? Then try to decide which categories we want to attempt?

And yes, that means I'd like to give this a shot ... I think?

message 12: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Everyone, we have a new challenge for June and July. Let's everyone read through it and start thinking about whether or not they are participating AND which categories we are willing to do.

Everyone who wants to participate, please MESSAGE me with your top THREE category choices, and I'll do my best to work out where everyone can go for us to finish the challenge!

This one is complicated, so make sure you read every category and make sure you understand it!

Oh, and ps -- we have to read FORTY-NINE BOOKS, so we're going to need anyone and everyone to sign up and read read read!

Don't forget -- we don't have to do EVERY category, so if none of us want to run a buddy read or whatnot, we can double up! :)

message 13: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Yes, I think we can handle it... I'm pretty sure we can handle it.

Oh, and she said this: "Yes, a "buddy read" may be between two members of the same Team"... so if we choose to read Dresden #1 we could :)

message 14: by Barb (last edited May 21, 2013 06:23PM) (new)

Barb The hard part about doing a "formal" buddy read is coming up with discussion questions. Unless... wonder if we're allowed to use questions we've found elsewhere on the 'net? I've found a couple of websites with questions we could use ... I'll bookmark them for now.

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
You can "revist" an old BOM or old "buddy read."

message 16: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Hmmm, I have been wanting to read some of the books this group read before I joined...

message 17: by Barb (new)

Barb If we find discussion questions from a different website (not on Goodreads), could we use those for our buddy read discussion questions? Or do they have to be questions we've come up with ourselves?

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
Well, if you credit the website, and they haven't listed anything about NOT doing so, I don't see why not. I know some books have discussion questions at the back.

message 19: by Barb (new)

Barb OK thanks :) One more question about the buddy reads option: If we chose to do that for this challenge, we would have to do *7* buddy reads, correct?

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
Barb wrote: "OK thanks :) One more question about the buddy reads option: If we chose to do that for this challenge, we would have to do *7* buddy reads, correct?"

No! You only have to have seven books read by Team Members doing BOM/"buddy read."

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
Or plural.

Well, you could have as many of "buddy reads" here as you want. Enough so that you have 14 books read. You can't go over that. That is what it would be if you doubled the #4 Category. Now, this could be four of your Team Members reading Dracula and five of your Team Members reading The Hobbit and five of your Team Members reading The Restorer. However you want to work it. You may use the DQs already written by the Mod Account for The Restorer, with maybe coming up with some general DQs to qualify for a "revisit-buddy read."

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
Please note. All Team Members must come up with one set of DQs.

You may do the "buddy read" with Steven, and do one of his days DQs, if you were so inclined. He still has to read the book, though.

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
Eep! Did I say Seven instead of Steven? I'd best hurry and change it before he notices.

Good to know, Sheila. ☺

message 31: by Barb (new)

Barb We just need to be sure to coordinate our efforts so that we actually complete seven options :)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 240 comments I think I could complete Category six - the May RaT challenge titles and quite a few of the colour ahead and behind options.

message 33: by Jane (last edited May 23, 2013 06:19AM) (new)

Jane | 206 comments If someone every week after the team update could write the colours for Ahead and Behind we might get them done just by coincidence that whatever books we anyway plan to read fits.

I am sure I will read more than the 7 Behind Enemy Lines book in the 7 weeks so we will see where the rest can fit in.

message 34: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Yeah, Jane, I agree. I think some of our more active readers will finish their categories and still read a lot more. Good thing is, even if we finish 7 categories and people keep reading, we're adding books to our tower challenge, which we need to catch up on anyways!!!!

message 35: by Barb (new)

Barb Steven wrote: "We can do the two color categories if we want to, but that one is more complicated in my opinion, as the colors will change each week with the leaderboard, so it'll be harder to plan ahead."

I thought we only had to worry about the colors changing once -- we would use the colors of the teams ahead of/behind us at the end of May (the list that will be posted this Sunday) during the month of June, then the list that will be posted at the end of June for books to read in July. Maybe I misunderstood the rules?

message 36: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Maybe that is right, Barb. I didn't quite get it, so I moved on past it haha.

message 37: by Barb (last edited May 23, 2013 07:01AM) (new)

Barb I'm sure one of the mods will answer this when they see the question, since they like to stop by to visit now and then :) Or we could post it in the official challenge thread, to be sure they see it.

message 38: by Barb (last edited May 23, 2013 07:10AM) (new)

Barb Steven, I had an idea, but it might make things harder for you, so if you don't like it, feel free to shoot it down right now :)

We can't change books around once a category has been submitted to the mods. Since we want to be sure to make the best use of every single book we read, I'm thinking that when we finish a book, we can post all the info here -- title, author, date completed, etc. -- along with a list of ALL of the categories the book would fit.

For example, if I read Out of The Easy by Ruta Sepetys Out of The Easy, it could count for the O in the Tower Teams Reading Challenge spell-it-out OR it could count for the Behind the Lines category OR it could be used for a green cover.

If we post all of the possible options, then we (you? LOL) could put the book where it would be most useful to finishing the challenge ... if that makes any sense? It would mean waiting until very near the end of the challenge to submit any of our completed categories, though, which would most likely be a pain for you, so I can see why you might not like that option :)

message 39: by Barb (new)

Barb Jane wrote: "I am sure I will read more than the 7 Behind Enemy Lines book in the 7 weeks so we will see where the rest can fit in. "

Well, if you can find 14 "enemy" books that you want to read, as I understand it, you can do that category twice. That would help a lot :)

message 40: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Yes, Jane, if you finish your category and want to do another category, we can work that out too (or repeat the one you're doing already, you can do that too).

Barb, I plan on waiting a bit before posting a completed category anyways (possibly until after all of them are completed) for that very reason. :)

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
The colors for "ahead" and "behind" will only change once, at the last Sunday Update in June, on the 30th. This might give you another option, as you may also continue to use colors from May 26th.

message 42: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Thanks for clarifying, LK! :)

message 43: by Barb (new)

Barb Steven wrote: "Barb, I plan on waiting a bit before posting a completed category anyways (possibly until after all of them are completed) for that very reason. :) "

I figured you probably would :) BUT if we all post the categories our books would fit when we finish reading them, it will make your job a lot easier! Then YOU won't have to look to see which other categories might work.

message 44: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) True that!

I feel like I should post a "7% Challenge Book Post ONLY thread" so that the ONLY posts in there will be book posts and so much easier to keep up with!

message 45: by Barb (new)

Barb That probably wouldn't be a bad idea :) I saw an example in another team's thread of a format that makes a lot of sense. (Thanks to Kate S from the Electric Lime team!)

Example of what we should put in this post.

June 3rd
Under the Dome, by Stephen King

Would work for
Option 1: From Team Cerulean, turtlecollector's shelves
Option 5: Letters U, D, T, or S (My note: Are ALL words in the title allowed, or only the FIRST word, ignoring A, An and The?)
Option 7: Seven Letters in author's first name

message 46: by Barb (new)

Barb I just asked the mods about the spell-it-out rules. If we can use ANY word in the book title, that will make it easier :)

message 47: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) We can use Title (U), Author's first or last name (S or K), or series name (no series here)... so I don't think D would count. We *can* use the indefinite articles of a, an, the... but we can also ignore them.

I like that setup though!!!

message 48: by Barb (new)

Barb The only thing I'd add to that format would be to post the book's *cover as well, so we can see at a glance if it fits one of the color options too.

message 49: by Barb (new)

Barb It's official, only the FIRST word of the book's title counts. Also, they've added NBRC to the spell-it-out option #5.

message 50: by Diane L (new)

Diane L My understanding is that multiple people can contribute to the same part of the challenge. I like having someone who has volunteered to do all 7, but I believe we can count one-offs as well. So Jane can do Behind Enemy Lines with maybe a couple extras and if I happen to read a couple of Mom's books and Barb reads a couple for some of her other challenges that are on a competitor's shelves and Steven reads one, etc - we could easily double up on the Behind Enemy Lines.

Am I understanding the rules right?
