DRUM ROLL......2013 Miles Franklin announcement 19th June

Part of your challenge for June is to read at least one Miles Franklin winner or nominee either from 2013 or past lists. Then, as our TBR lists continue to grow at an alarming rate, try to lower them as much as you can this month...incorporate the Miles Franklin titles into your TBR if at all possible:)

Make sure you post your choices here!

Short List:
http://www.milesfranklin.com.au/2013/...
Long List:
http://www.milesfranklin.com.au/2013/...
Past list:

Read about the history of the Miles Franklin award here!

If your TBR looks like this....read as many as you can for JUNE!

 photo TBR.jpg

Your TBR reducing doesn't HAVE to be written by Aussie authors, only the Miles Franklin read/s...so make sure you challenge yourselves to lower that TBR and post your accomplishments at the end of June.

So whittle them down.....good luck, and happy reading!

message 11: by Trina (new)

Trina (trina88) I think I'll just do a TBR too. I looked through the lists and I don't own any of them, but maybe if I feel like going book shopping (something I'm trying to avoid, too many books!) maybe I'll buy one.

message 12: by Kyla (new)

Kyla Corrigan | 94 comments Like others I think I will just try and whittle down my TBR list :)

message 13: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 2001 comments I'll do this one and choose some books from my TBR as I really need to make a dent in that. I'll check out the long list though and see if there's anything there I might want to add!!! Thanks Brenda for the invite.

Sounds good everyone....those of you doing TBR, challenge yourself to read as many as possible for the month;)

I always read as many as possible from my TBR each month but thanks for giving us a challenge which helps rather than hinders!!!

message 17: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Yes, yes, and yes - I am definitely in - but just for the TBR. Like Phrynne, I am normally trying to whittle down my TBR list and at the moment, I've got about 6 library books from my TBR sitting on my shelf waiting for me to start. Meanwhile, I'll try to finish the other 3 books (also TBR's) I'm currently in the middle of before June.

Can anyone tell me, when I'm normally reading something from my TBR list, why it never seems to diminish???? Or might it have something to do with the books I add at the same pace as finishing the others?!!

I think it has something to do with adding MORE than we read Kathryn;P

message 19: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Well, at the moment I seem to be breaking even with a TBR/read ratio that is staying fairly constant, however that state of affairs could change at any time!!

I find it's completely out of control...my books multiply while I'm sleeping;)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Oh dear... Good luck with that!! :-)

message 24: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3564 comments I think I'll work on the TBR list. Although it's not huge, it is growing... I should probably try and keep it under control.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Miles Franklin Award book The Beloved by Annah Faulkner

To Be Read List

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West by Dee Brown
I read this at Uni; a factual and disturbing book, it pierced my conscience. Made me think of the Australian Aboriginal people. I've always promised myself a re-read. It features on Books Everyone Should Read Once lists.
After that, I've chosen 12 'lighter' books from my TBR list.

message 26: by Zaryna (new)

Zaryna (zaryna23) I got plenty of TBR book so im just gonna read as many of them as possible! :)

I read her book, Milk and Honey a while ago. I still think about the book every so often. It is one of those books that stays with you.

The Well by Elizabeth Jolley

Milk and Honey

I haven't read either of those Deb, I hadn't actually heard of the author either..

message 31: by Amber (new)

Amber (ukaunz) I'll read The Light Between Oceans (I managed to slot it into my Winter Challenge too!). Any other books I read in June will be on my TBR for the winter challenge, whatever I can get from the library quickly. Most probably Bitter Greens, Angels & Demons or The Happiest Refugee: A Memoir. Is it okay if I list them as I get them?

message 33: by Elaine (last edited May 31, 2013 08:16PM) (new)

Elaine | 2001 comments So here are some that I have marked from my TBR list,
The White Earth The White Earth by Andrew McGahan which was the 2005 winner of the Miles Franklin.
Joseph Anton. Salman Rushdie Joseph Anton. Salman Rushdie by Salman Rushdie and finally Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer .
I might try for a few more if I can but not sure which ones yet. The TBR ones don't have to be Australian,do they Brenda?

Adding one more to this challenge, Autumn Laing Autumn Laing by Alex Miller

Hey, fellow Canberran :-) You could try Canty's Bookshop in Fyshwick, they are very helpful and will even answer questions on their facebook page if you ask them about a particular book. Check them out here http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cantys-... Hope this helps :-)

I'm not sure, there are a few good ones :-) Perhaps Beyond Q in Curtin?

I must admit I don't often have time to search around for a specific second-hand book, so if there's something I'm after, I usually just get it online. I like browsing opshops for the random finds. Mostly I borrow from the library and friends. Wish I could buy more from independent booksellers, but it's not in my budget!

Mike (m2incanberra) | 13 comments Well done Amber - Beyond Q is the best here in Canberra. Its my escape from my four wonderful kids, especially with coffee and some afternoon Jazz in the background!

Sounds like heaven! I've only browsed a couple of times with kids in tow, so it's not the same experience obviously! :-D
