SOLVED: Boy stabs tree, tree's shadow chases him [s]

I'm trying to find a YA/Children's book of horror short stories. One story I remember is about a boy & his family who move into a house with a large, old tree in the backyard. On a whim, the boy stabs the tree with a pocketknife. Black ooze comes out. That night, the tree's shadows creep toward him in bed, then down the hall. He gets his dad to cut the tree down, burn the stump, then cover it with cement. The story ends with the boy worrying that someone might someday plant another tree in the same spot, because it was a nice place for a tree.

The only other fragment I remember is about a kid who goes to an old woman who is a witch, because he wants a spell to find out what he's going to get for his birthday (I think). At the end, she puts him under a spell and tells him what he's going to get, but it wouldn't matter because he'll remember nothing once the spell is lifted. I'm not entirely convinced these are in the same book, but I have a feeling they are.
