Summer Knight (The Dresden Files #4) by Jim Butcher (Start Date: June 21, 2013)

13.Elaine is alive! Do you believe it? I thought Harry accepted it too easily. And if she is the real Elaine do you think she’s telling the truth about being Justin’s thrall? And seeking protection from the summer queen? This seems like a big fat set up to me!
14.I hate Morgan .He’s a thug who follows the rules and takes them a notch higher. I’m thinking (hoping)he might die in this book. Could he be the one who betrayed Simon?
15.How did Ebenezar know about the 3 things that the Merlin would try? It seems number “three” has some magical power to it. Comments?
16.What does his nightmare mean? Is it just a warning or it means something has happened or going to happen to Susan?
17.Woohoo 3 Queens for each court. Are they really mothers and daughters? How do you think they choose the knights? Is their only purpose killing the people the queens can’t kill?
18.Who do you think sent Grum and what was he looking for?
19.Do these changelings have anything to do with Reuel’s murder? I think somehow the murder is related to them, not that they killed Reuel but he was killed because of them. What do you think? Does the girls’ green hair have any significance?
20.I loved the tiny fairies scenes and , Elidee’s .so funny. I’m tempted to place a piece of pizza outside and see if a fairy would show or not! Heehee ! what did you think about the wyldfae getting called to each side?
21.What did you think of the winter lady’s court and the musician death ? I think it showed how they do their bargaining. Is she as careless as Harry thought her to be?
22.Were you wondering what the hell is Harry doing zipping down his pants??? That was hilarious! What’s with these fairies and babies?
23.What do you think happened to lily? Do you think winter knight has anything to do with it?Do you think he’s too strong for all the winter queens to control? Or is it just the lady that can’t overpower him?
24.Don’t you think Elaine showing up in Harry’s car wounded and then asking him to take her to the summer lady was suspicious? Especially when she wants him to stop doing Mab’s investigation and stay with them? Is she as good hearted as she shows?
25.And most importantly Why do you think Mab chose Harry?

**Psst** I think you mean "thug" not "tug" in your second question. And yes, I thought he had settled things with him... yet here he is again, giving Harry a hard time.

13. I think she is the real Elaine - she knows too many details of her past with Harry to be fake. I don't trust her for one second though and I have my doubts that she was enthralled by Justin. How convenient that she sought protection from the Summer Queen and just happens to be her emissary - this whole thing smells like yesterday's diapers!
14.Morgan is such a stickler for the rules, I can't see him as the one who betrayed Simon. I kind of like Morgan. Yes, he has it in for Harry because he believes Merlin and the other members of the White Council who claim that Harry is a traitor and has evil tendencies, but I suspect that when push comes to shove he will see the truth and do the right thing (its what he did in book #1 after all).
15. Ebenezar knows the way Merlin thinks. First he tried to finagle his buddy onto the council, then he tried to have Harry's wizard status revoked and them he sent Morgan to bait Harry into attacking him. Its a good thing Harry realized the trap before falling into it like he usually does :0)
16. That nightmare was very creepy. I just think its Harry's subconscious guilt - he still blames himself for Susan being attacked even though she went to Bianca's gathering all by herself. She made her own choices.
17. Yes, they do seem to be mothers and daughters. There's not much difference in my mind between the Seelie and Unseelie fae. Winter or Summer, they are all manipulative and power hungry and I wouldn't put it past any of them to kill any anyone who got in their way.
As to how they choose the Summer Knight, it is probably someone who has something they want. They find that person's weakness and take advantage of it. Its obvious that Lloyd despises the Winter Lady so he doesn't serve her by choice. She or Mab must have tricked him into it. They seem to do the fae's dirty work - whatever that entails.
18. No idea but I'm leaning toward his being sent by the Summer Queen to get rid of any incriminating evidence - that would suggest that she had her own Knight killed but seeing the relationship between Lloyd and Maeve I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. She would also have the added bonus of setting Mab up to take the fall.
19. Reule was protecting the changelings from Maeve and Lloyd so it is possible that he was killed because of them. However, I agree with Harry's assessment of Maeve - she isn't powerful or subtle enough to have killed him.
20. Toot-Toot and his friends are the highlight of the book so far. I love James Marster's voices for them - so cute and adorable. The politics of the fae are certainly interesting.
21. The fae are evil and this scene proves that they cannot be trusted.
22. I was cringing in that scene - loved how he poured the ice water down his pants, lol! That's one way of taking care of the problem. The fairies and babies thing reminds me of Rumplestiltskin. They want people/creatures that they can mold and manipulate as they see fit. Having the child of a wizard under her thumb may give Maeve additional power.
23. I'm not sure that the Winter Knight has Lily. That would mean he had to have taken her before going to the underground city because afterwards he was probably too stoned to do anything. If that's the case, where did he stash her? No, I'm leaning toward a different explanation. Maybe she knows who Reule's killer is and is either in hiding with someone or been taken/killed by the murderer.
Maeve may be too weak to control the Winter Knight but I have no doubt that Mab would have no trouble keeping him in his place.
24. The hairs at the back of my neck stand up whenever Elaine turns up - she is up to something. No idea what it is but it won't be good for Harry.
25. Mab must know something about Harry - perhaps it is related to what Martha Liberty said about him. Another important questions is why his godmother, Lea, sold his debt to Mab. She seemed hellbent on having him in the previous book so why let him go … there is more to this than meets the eye.

I'll start listening to chapters 17-24 tomorrow and hope to have the questions up by this time tomorrow night.

14.you might be right about Morgan!
17.Interesting theory about the knight's weakness
23.Agreed
25.Good question about Lea

26. Hmm…the members of the Summer court seem to go out of their way to be friendly. I wonder why that is?
27. The girl who greets Harry when he arrives at the hotel turns out to be the Summer Lady. Did you suspect as much?
28. Aurora claims that Harry is hurting and is susceptible to evil She offers to help him in exchange for him give up the investigation for Mab. What did you make of her comments and her offer?
29. Looks like the war between the Summer and Winter Fae is at hand and it may result in eternal Winter. Thoughts? I wonder what would happen if the Summer court won?
30. Aww. Murphy is Harry's go to girl when he is in trouble. Thoughts.
31. The Tigress, AKA the ghoul that attacked Harry, is a hired gun. Do you think that someone other than the Red Court may have put the hit out on Harry?
32. Mind Fog in a Walmart - there seem to be a few literary references in this one (I've noticed Rumplestiltskin, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and now The Mist). Is Butcher simply showing off his knowledge or is there a purpose to these?
33. I love Murphy - she is so kickass! - No question, just had to mention this.
34. Hmm…are Grum, the Tigress and Chlorofiend (love that name!) in cahoots?! Whoever they are working for wanted Harry gone even before Mab coerced him into helping her. Harry also feels that the Chlorfiend's actions are personal, perhaps a vendetta. Who do you think is behind all of this?
35. In so many UF books, supernatural occurrences are explained away to the general population as mundane and/or natural events - gas leaks, earthquakes, El Nino, etc. Why do you think people are so ready to believe these explanations rather than open their minds to other possibilities? Do you ever think that some of the things we hear on the news might not actually be what everyone says they are (or am I being paranoid, lol!)?
36. Harry has an interesting conversation with Meryl, the changeling. Here are a couple of points to ponder:
a) The various groups in the Dresedenverse see Harry in a variety of ways: the Sidhe see him as Mab's pet, the Vampire wannabes see him as a psychotic vigilante, the magical crowd see him as distant and dangerous but smart and honorable, crooks think he's a hit man, straights think he's a fraud, Meryl thinks he needs a hair cut. What do you think of Harry?
b) Harry says that being a wizard is frustrating because he sees all the bad things in the world, his friends get hurt and people die before he can save them. Do you think being a wizard is worthwhile to Harry? Would you want to be one?
c) Meryl explains the conflict she feels being a changeling (in her case half human and half troll). Changelings get to choose between being human or being fae. What do you think of her dilemma? Which would you choose?
37. Turns out Lea sold Harry's debt to Mab in order to redress a power imbalance caused by the athame given to her by Bianca. Lea claims that the athene is powerful because of who it belonged to. Any ideas?
38. Lea also claims that she only wants what is best for Harry (even if that means turning him into an obedient hound...). She has, however, been protecting him at pivotal moments in the book. What do you think her agenda might be?
39. The Stone Table - VERY creepy! When someone is sacrificed on the table the power in their blood is transferred to the Queen of whichever court is in possession of it. Also, it seems that the Summer Knight may have been killed in order to facilitate a war between the Summer and Winter courts - I wonder what this person will gain from them being at war.
40. Ahhh! Morgan's animosity makes sense now. He lost someone dear to him when the vampires attacked Simon and he blames Harry!
41. Lloyd Slate attacked Elaine for the Winter Lady. According to Elaine, Maeve's "psychotic nymphomaniac" persona is an act and she is much smarter than she lets on. Do you think that Maeve is behind it all?

26. Hmm…the members of the Summer court seem to go out of their way to be friendly. I wonder why that is?
It seemed really suspicious to me , we know that they summer might be a bit less evil but they are still not goody-goody fairies
27. The girl who greets Harry when he arrives at the hotel turns out to be the Summer Lady. Did you suspect as much?
not at all
28. Aurora claims that Harry is hurting and is susceptible to evil She offers to help him in exchange for him give up the investigation for Mab. What did you make of her comments and her offer?
I thought :Huh there , she is trying to sabotage his mission
29. Looks like the war between the Summer and Winter Fae is at hand and it may result in eternal Winter. Thoughts? I wonder what would happen if the Summer court won?
Global warming??:D but if one of the wins , what's there to stop the loser to challenge the winner again?
30. Aww. Murphy is Harry's go to girl when he is in trouble. Thoughts.
He trust her and knows she'd do anything she can. I hope they end up together now that Susan is out of the picture
31. The Tigress, AKA the ghoul that attacked Harry, is a hired gun. Do you think that someone other than the Red Court may have put the hit out on Harry?
I keep thinking that a wizard is behind all these , specially after the giant plant didn't kill Murphy I thought it's a wizard behind this so he can't kill a human
32. Mind Fog in a Walmart - there seem to be a few literary references in this one (I've noticed Rumplestiltskin, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and now The Mist). Is Butcher simply showing off his knowledge or is there a purpose to these?
Huh good point , I didn't notice that! I think there should be a purpose
33. I love Murphy - she is so kickass! - No question, just had to mention this.
Agreed
I answered this in #31
35. In so many UF books, supernatural occurrences are explained away to the general population as mundane and/or natural events - gas leaks, earthquakes, El Nino, etc. Why do you think people are so ready to believe these explanations rather than open their minds to other possibilities? Do you ever think that some of the things we hear on the news might not actually be what everyone says they are (or am I being paranoid, lol!)?
no you're not paranoid I think like that too. People accept those explanations because they are familiar with it and We most of the time we believe what is shown to us.
36. Harry has an interesting conversation with Meryl, the changeling. Here are a couple of points to ponder:
a) I think he needs to practice his magical skills , he's not good at a lot of things and just uses brute force to accomplish his magic
b)No he hasn't gained anything by being one ! I'm not sure if I want to be one.
c)I think the human part
37. Turns out Lea sold Harry's debt to Mab in order to redress a power imbalance caused by the athame given to her by Bianca. Lea claims that the athene is powerful because of who it belonged to. Any ideas?
no but I really like to know , that person is probably a real person , a historical or religious figure
38. Lea also claims that she only wants what is best for Harry (even if that means turning him into an obedient hound...). She has, however, been protecting him at pivotal moments in the book. What do you think her agenda might be?
Keep him safe until she can hurt him? I don't trust her
I don't know I can't think of anything
40. Ahhh! Morgan's animosity makes sense now. He lost someone dear to him when the vampires attacked Simon and he blames Harry!
Yep unfortunately he's not as bad as I thought him to be but he's still not fair and doesn't want to see beyond the council rules
41. Lloyd Slate attacked Elaine for the Winter Lady. According to Elaine, Maeve's "psychotic nymphomaniac" persona is an act and she is much smarter than she lets on. Do you think that Maeve is behind it all?
I knew it that she is faking it !!I don't think it's Maeve though

I'll run some errands and catch up, though.

More reasons for getting sidetracked :D
but it's nice to chat people who you haven't met in a while

13.Elaine is alive! Do you believe it? I thought Harry accepted it too easily. And if she is the real Elaine do you think she’s telling the truth about being Justin’s thrall? And seeking protection from the summer queen? This seems like a big fat set up to me!
I don’t have a clue if she’s “alive” or if this is another fake. Whoever – or whatever – she is, I don’t trust her. Yes, I smell set-up.
14. I hate Morgan .He’s a thug who follows the rules and takes them a notch higher. I’m thinking (hoping) he might die in this book. Could he be the one who betrayed Simon?
LOL! In the TV series, Morgan doesn’t come across as much as a stinker as he is in the book. He’s more like what Lauren said: a stickler for the rules.
15.How did Ebenezar know about the 3 things that the Merlin would try? It seems number “three” has some magical power to it. Comments?
Huh. Hadn’t thought of that, but you could be right.
16. What does his nightmare mean? Is it just a warning or it means something has happened or going to happen to Susan?
I don’t know, but it was pretty freaky. Could be foreshadowing. But probably as Lauren says: guilt.
17. Woohoo 3 Queens for each court. Are they really mothers and daughters? How do you think they choose the knights? Is their only purpose killing the people the queens can’t kill?
Huh. See, it never occurred to me that they wouldn’t be related. Yes, I think they are a type of assassin, or ones that do the dirty work for the queens. To be totally honest, I was surprised by this twist. I though Harry was going to be the “Summer Knight” – hence the title of the book. **shrugs** Shows what I know.
18. Who do you think sent Grum and what was he looking for?
At that point, I figured one of the Queens sent him; however, I wasn’t sure which one.
19. Do these changelings have anything to do with Reuel’s murder? I think somehow the murder is related to them, not that they killed Reuel but he was killed because of them. What do you think? Does the girls’ green hair have any significance?
I think there is a cause and effect relationship. Again, I just don’t know how or why. Hadn’t thought of her green hair. **shrugs**
20. I loved the tiny fairies scenes and, Elidee’s so funny. I’m tempted to place a piece of pizza outside and see if a fairy would show or not! Heehee! What did you think about the wyldfae getting called to each side?
Oh, yes. My favorite part of the book so far – and it is narrated so well. LOL! Pizza as bait? Good idea. I thought Toot Toot telling about the wyldfae was a clue, but darned if I know how it will play out.
21. What did you think of the winter lady’s court and the musician death? I think it showed how they do their bargaining. Is she as careless as Harry thought her to be?
She’s a cold, heartless b!tch.
22.Were you wondering what the hell is Harry doing zipping down his pants??? That was hilarious! What’s with these fairies and babies?
Yes, I had my doubts about him there for a second. I don’t know, but I think they want Harry – or his blood/DNA – for a specific reason.
23. What do you think happened to Lily? Do you think winter knight has anything to do with it? Do you think he’s too strong for all the winter queens to control? Or is it just the lady that can’t overpower him?
I hadn’t a clue. However, after reading Lauren’s answer, I’m thinking she’s onto something. Especially since, as she pointed out, he was too stoned.
24. Don’t you think Elaine showing up in Harry’s car wounded and then asking him to take her to the summer lady was suspicious? Especially when she wants him to stop doing Mab’s investigation and stay with them? Is she as good hearted as she shows?
Very suspicious!
25. And most importantly, why do you think Mab chose Harry?
I haven’t a clue! But she wanted his specifically, I’m sure. I also want to know – as Lauren pointed out – why did his godmother, Lea, sell him to Mab?

26. Hmm…the members of the Summer court seem to go out of their way to be friendly. I wonder why that is?
I think they want Harry to switch allegiance. I’m very suspect.
27. The girl who greets Harry when he arrives at the hotel turns out to be the Summer Lady. Did you suspect as much?
Nope. Totally surprised by most everything in this book.
28. Aurora claims that Harry is hurting and is susceptible to evil. She offers to help him in exchange for him give up the investigation for Mab. What did you make of her comments and her offer?
She has a vested interest in seeing him stop, but I don’t know why. I thought he might cave, even if only for a little while; he is in such pain.
29. Looks like the war between the Summer and Winter Fae is at hand and it may result in eternal Winter. Thoughts? I wonder what would happen if the Summer court won?
I had to LOL over ShoSho’s answer about Global Warming. ☺ I guess eternal Summer? Which couldn’t be good; we need rain.
30. Aww. Murphy is Harry's go to girl when he is in trouble. Thoughts.
I love Murphy! I was glad she and Harry aren’t at such odds any more.
31. The Tigress, AKA the ghoul that attacked Harry, is a hired gun. Do you think that someone other than the Red Court may have put the hit out on Harry?
Yes. I think many people was Harry dead.
32. Mind Fog in a Walmart - there seem to be a few literary references in this one (I've noticed Rumplestiltskin, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and now The Mist). Is Butcher simply showing off his knowledge or is there a purpose to these?
Ah! Great question… to which I have no answer.
33. I love Murphy - she is so kickass! - No question, just had to mention this.
Yes, I was surprised she could do so. Just love her, though. Must be because of her purity, or whatever it was that Harry saw in her in the last book.
I hadn’t even considered ShoSho’s answer that it might be a wizard. Interesting. Really, I haven’t a clue.
No. I don’t think you’re paranoid. I think there could be other reasons… maybe not all paranormal, but still… maybe some!
I think he is honorable, and compassionate, and misunderstood. I’m going to agree with ShoSho, though: he needs to practice his magic! He needs to get his life together, too. He’s riding on fumes.
b) Harry says that being a wizard is frustrating because he sees all the bad things in the world, his friends get hurt and people die before he can save them. Do you think being a wizard is worthwhile to Harry? Would you want to be one?
No, I Harry lets martyrdom slip in every now and then, and I don’t think he’s liking his role. But, hey, if I could have just a pinch, I’d be happy, but I would want to have to deal with what Harry does.
c) Meryl explains the conflict she feels being a changeling (in her case half human and half troll). Changelings get to choose between being human or being fae. What do you think of her dilemma? Which would you choose?
Well, I found out why her hair is green. I’d go human. The fae are too political for me.
37. Turns out Lea sold Harry's debt to Mab in order to redress a power imbalance caused by the athame given to her by Bianca. Lea claims that the athene is powerful because of who it belonged to. Any ideas?
I figure it is an iconic person in the past. Sir Galahad, or some such person.
38. Lea also claims that she only wants what is best for Harry (even if that means turning him into an obedient hound...). She has, however, been protecting him at pivotal moments in the book. What do you think her agenda might be?
Yes, she has nefarious intentions for Harry. I don’t trust her.
It was very creepy! And, excellent question.
40. Ahhh! Morgan's animosity makes sense now. He lost someone dear to him when the vampires attacked Simon and he blames Harry!
Very sad. Makes him a more sympatric character, if a rule stickler.
41. Lloyd Slate attacked Elaine for the Winter Lady. According to Elaine, Maeve's "psychotic nymphomaniac" persona is an act and she is much smarter than she lets on. Do you think that Maeve is behind it all?
See. We were right in not trusting Elaine! The Queen Who is to Be? Could very well be! Her title alone gives her motive.

29. Lol! Global Warming. I didn't think of that.
30. I don't really like Susan. I always thought she was manipulative and taking advantage of Harry so that she could get the scoop. I wouldn't be sorry to see her gone but I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of her.
36a. I agree. Harry is not as proficient with his magic as he should be. He's always running out of steam.
@Lisa Kay:
27. I had my suspicions when she first came on the scene but I changed my mind. I should go with my instincts.
37. Sir Galahad is a really good guess. I'm sure it will be someone well known from religion or literature. Amoracchius has a distinguished history after all.
I'll be happy to do the questions. Need to think of some good ones and will post tomorrow morning.

1) he finally tells her everything. She has earned the right to know, he owes her.
2) When he is putting the charm on her finger and senses her fear, I loved his threat.
3) When he teases about her gun
4) Murphy put on the boots and kicked ass. Go Murph!

30- I don't like Susan either. I also felt she was using Harry to get the scoop and then expected to be saved when she screwed up. She always was a liability. We'll see her again, but she'll be a stronger person by then and much more likeable.

Wonderful, Lauren! Thanks so much.

42. Harry tracks Elaine down at O'Hare. It looks like when the going gets tough, Elaine gets going.
43. Harry and Elaine pays the Mothers a visit and are confronted by one very UGLY Unicorn. I always thought Unicorns were symbols of purity, innocence and goodness. I wonder what warped world this one came from.
44. The Mothers were not what I expected. They actually offer Harry some useful information and advice. How did they match up to your expectations?
45. The Mothers ask Harry a question: Which is more important, the body or the soul? Harry gives a very insightful answer - for an old person on their death bed approaching the afterlife, the soul is more important but for a young person facing excruciating pain, the body is. What did you think of his explanation and do you agree?
46. So, it turns out that the seemingly sweet Aurora is the villain and that she has kidnapped Lily and turned her to stone. Did you ever suspect her or wonder about the "statues' in her garden?
47. I knew it, Elaine that B*tch betrayed Harry - AGAIN! Surely Harry has learned his lesson now?
48. Aurora provides a convoluted explanation of her motive for killing the Summer Knight and inciting a war between the courts. Did any of it make sense to you?
49. Harry understands Elaine's hint about their shared education and manages to break her binding spell. Was this sufficient to redeem Elaine? Should Harry trust her?
50. The Gatekeeper arrives just in time and gives Harry the choice of winning the trial now or continuing on to fight the BIG FIGHT. Was there ever any doubt about Harry's choice? What does this say about his character? What did you think of the Gatekeeper?
51. Harry gathers together his own army of Changelings, Alphas and Pixies (at least, I think they're Pixies - never mind…). They all seems so eager to fight. Why do you think Harry is able to convince/inspire them?
52. Some interesting events occur during the final battle:
a. Fix avenges Meryl by attacking the Winter Knight.
b. Ace is exposed as the traitor who hired the Tigress (AKA the Ghoul) to kill Harry at the Red Court's behest.
c. Meryl makes her choice between human and fae - and also makes the ultimate sacrifice.
d. Harry unleashes some seriously PO'd Pixies on Aurora.
What do you makes of these points?
53. In the aftermath of the battle. Mab offers Harry the Mantle of the Winter Knight. He refuses but she implies that he may yet change his mind. Do you think he will?
54. The Winter Knight is carted off by Mab and Maeve. Is he getting his just reward?
55. In the end, Fix is the new Summer Knight and Lily is the new Summer Lady. Do you think they will be corrupted by the Fae or remain true to themselves? Can they make a difference?
56. Elaine offers Harry some advice about Susan. Do you agree with her assessment?
57. And of course, the final literary allusion. What's a story about the Faerie Queen without a William Shakespeare quote: “Lord, what fools these mortals be!” Are we really so foolish?

#14. I haven't watched the Tv series , should I? Is it good? Did they make more than one season?
#17. I let you finish the book then comment on this one.
#36b. Yes he tries to be martyr every now and then , he doesn't have a life , I don't want a life like either.

She is the sort who run away when going gets though , the exact opposite of Harry.
43. Harry and Elaine pays the Mothers a visit and are confronted by one very UGLY Unicorn. I always thought Unicorns were symbols of purity, innocence and goodness. I wonder what warped world this one came from.
You're right ,in most myth unicorns are beautiful and pure not in this one , but in most books fairies are good too!
44. The Mothers were not what I expected. They actually offer Harry some useful information and advice. How did they match up to your expectations?
I didn't expect them to be old and sitting next to each other sipping tea!!!but I loved that scene with them
45. The Mothers ask Harry a question: Which is more important, the body or the soul? Harry gives a very insightful answer - for an old person on their death bed approaching the afterlife, the soul is more important but for a young person facing excruciating pain, the body is. What did you think of his explanation and do you agree?
His answer didn't make sense to me but as he said the question was meaningless
46. So, it turns out that the seemingly sweet Aurora is the villain and that she has kidnapped Lily and turned her to stone. Did you ever suspect her or wonder about the "statues' in her garden?
I didn't wonder about the statue in the garden and didn't think he's the villain but I didn't trust her I knew her being sweet and compassionate was an act , just didn't know why
47. I knew it, Elaine that B*tch betrayed Harry - AGAIN! Surely Harry has learned his lesson now?
That B*tch , I hope we never see her again
48. Aurora provides a convoluted explanation of her motive for killing the Summer Knight and inciting a war between the courts. Did any of it make sense to you?
nope !!!as you said it was convoluted
49. Harry understands Elaine's hint about their shared education and manages to break her binding spell. Was this sufficient to redeem Elaine? Should Harry trust her?
redeem her maybe , trust her absolutely no !
50. The Gatekeeper arrives just in time and gives Harry the choice of winning the trial now or continuing on to fight the BIG FIGHT. Was there ever any doubt about Harry's choice? What does this say about his character? What did you think of the Gatekeeper?
He's the good sort , he never runs away he stays and finishes the job no matter what! Humm the Gatekeeper , is his name literal title? is he a real gatekeeper? what gate? and I'm curious about his relation with Mab
51. Harry gathers together his own army of Changelings, Alphas and Pixies (at least, I think they're Pixies - never mind…). They all seems so eager to fight. Why do you think Harry is able to convince/inspire them?
Changelings were there to save Lily and Alphas they seem like the sort of the people who are in it for the excitement or maybe the greater good! but Toot-toot and his army were there for the pizza
52. Some interesting events occur during the final battle:
a. Fix avenges Meryl by attacking the Winter Knight.
He's not as scared and fragile as it seemed and he loved Meryl (like sister maybe?)
b. Ace is exposed as the traitor who hired the Tigress (AKA the Ghoul) to kill Harry at the Red Court's behest.
I have one big question here , how did the red court know that harry would be there ?how did they know the entrance to the fairy world(can't remember the name)?I wonder if we see Ace again
c. Meryl makes her choice between human and fae - and also makes the ultimate sacrifice.
I was so sad that she died , she was a great character
d. Harry unleashes some seriously PO'd Pixies on Aurora.
Loved it but didn't know they could be vicious and kill
What do you makes of these points?
53. In the aftermath of the battle. Mab offers Harry the Mantle of the Winter Knight. He refuses but she implies that he may yet change his mind. Do you think he will?
again the number three. she said she had to ask him 3 times. no he won't change his mind
54. The Winter Knight is carted off by Mab and Maeve. Is he getting his just reward?
yes probably they just torture him and then kill him when they find the replacement
55. In the end, Fix is the new Summer Knight and Lily is the new Summer Lady. Do you think they will be corrupted by the Fae or remain true to themselves? Can they make a difference?
Difference no but they won't be corrupted ! and we found out that queens are not necessary mothers and daughters
56. Elaine offers Harry some advice about Susan. Do you agree with her assessment?
what's done to Susan is done and she is right to avoid Harry , the consequences are too great if she slips and bite him. and there won't be another Unraveling for her so Harry need to move on and stop feeling sorry for himself
57. And of course, the final literary allusion. What's a story about the Faerie Queen without a William Shakespeare quote: “Lord, what fools these mortals be!” Are we really so foolish?
I didn't understand this !!!

42. Harry tracks Elaine down at O'Hare. It looks like when the going gets tough, Elaine gets going.
This is the biggest difference between Elaine and Harry. Harry always tries to do the right thing be it face consequences for his actions or help his friends or save the world. Elaine does what's right for Elaine.
43. Harry and Elaine pays the Mothers a visit and are confronted by one very UGLY Unicorn. I always thought Unicorns were symbols of purity, innocence and goodness. I wonder what warped world this one came from. Very ugly, but as we later learn, not really a unicorn at all.
44. The Mothers were not what I expected. They actually offer Harry some useful information and advice. How did they match up to your expectations?
Not what I expected at all!
45. The Mothers ask Harry a question: Which is more important, the body or the soul? Harry gives a very insightful answer - for an old person on their death bed approaching the afterlife, the soul is more important but for a young person facing excruciating pain, the body is. What did you think of his explanation and do you agree?
I like his answer, sometimes there is no right answer to a question
46. So, it turns out that the seemingly sweet Aurora is the villain and that she has kidnapped Lily and turned her to stone. Did you ever suspect her or wonder about the "statues' in her garden?
I never thought it might be her, I thought Maeve was behind it all.
47. I knew it, Elaine that B*tch betrayed Harry - AGAIN! Surely Harry has learned his lesson now?
I was so angry at this! Harry continually puts himself at risk to help her and she helps only when it's convinient or safe for her.
48. Aurora provides a convoluted explanation of her motive for killing the Summer Knight and inciting a war between the courts. Did any of it make sense to you? Nope, she's crazy! If you notice the fairies are always trying to keep balance. Harry mentions this to Billy before they go talk to Maeve that it is a very important concept to them. I don't think this is a series spoiler but just in case, (view spoiler)
49. Harry understands Elaine's hint about their shared education and manages to break her binding spell. Was this sufficient to redeem Elaine? Should Harry trust her? Not really, like I said before she only helps when it's convenient or safe for her. I wouldn't hold it against her except that she expects and knows Harry will always help no matter the personal cost to him. She knows him and takes advantage of that knowledge.
50. The Gatekeeper arrives just in time and gives Harry the choice of winning the trial now or continuing on to fight the BIG FIGHT. Was there ever any doubt about Harry's choice? What does this say about his character? What did you think of the Gatekeeper? I love the Gatekeeper, he likes Harry. I've always thought he has the same contempt for the Senior Council as Harry and Ebenezar do.
51. Harry gathers together his own army of Changelings, Alphas and Pixies (at least, I think they're Pixies - never mind…). They all seems so eager to fight. Why do you think Harry is able to convince/inspire them? They are loyal to him because they know he is loyal to them.
52. Some interesting events occur during the final battle:
a. Fix avenges Meryl by attacking the Winter Knight. Loved that Fix kicked his ass! Also I like that Harry doesn't solve everything. It's what keeps him from being a Gary Stu. He knows he needs help and asks for it.
b. Ace is exposed as the traitor who hired the Tigress (AKA the Ghoul) to kill Harry at the Red Court's behest. I thought the Red Court know more about Harry and his whereabouts than they should.
c. Meryl makes her choice between human and fae - and also makes the ultimate sacrifice. She makes the sacrifice because she knows it's necessary to save Lily.
d. Harry unleashes some seriously PO'd Pixies on Aurora. Love the Pixies!
53. In the aftermath of the battle. Mab offers Harry the Mantle of the Winter Knight. He refuses but she implies that he may yet change his mind. Do you think he will? Why does she want Harry?
54. The Winter Knight is carted off by Mab and Maeve. Is he getting his just reward? I know he does.
55. In the end, Fix is the new Summer Knight and Lily is the new Summer Lady. Do you think they will be corrupted by the Fae or remain true to themselves? Can they make a difference? Maybe, holding that much power it's impossible that they remain wholly unchainged.
56. Elaine offers Harry some advice about Susan. Do you agree with her assessment? Yes, ultimately Susan made her choices and Harry is not responsible for the consequences. He needs to move on.
57. And of course, the final literary allusion. What's a story about the Faerie Queen without a William Shakespeare quote: “Lord, what fools these mortals be!” Are we really so foolish?
I think we are!

“Lord, what fools these mortals be!” Is a quote from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. It's a comment on how we make fools of ourselves for love. I think that by quoting it at the end Harry acknowledges that he has been a fool where women are concerned. He was fooled by Elaine and has behaved foolishly since Susan left. He's decided to move on with his life, and in true Dresden fashion makes a subtle cultural reference to that effect.

Thanks , now that makes sense

#43. really? who was it?Korrick?
#49. that B*tch :D
#53. She knows how strong he is?"
Yes, it was Korrick.
ShoSho wrote: "One more thing is Harry free of the fairies or does he have to do another 2 tasks?"
We'll see the fairies again, but not in the next book I think. However we will see Susan. <----not a spoilers it's in the book's blurb.

Lol! The book is still fresh in my mind so I just sat down and wrote the questions.

That's a great explanation for the quote, Gisela. In the play, it is Puck who says it as a fairy who doesn't understand why humans behave the way they do. I think the same goes here, Harry is commenting that Mab will never completely understand his choices, which seem foolish to her.
@ShoSho - yes, I have a feeling we will be seeing more of Mab and the Fae. She has plans for Harry - *shudder*
