I too am interested but always nervous with brand new books that are hyped up. Looking forward to your thoughts.

For anyone thinking of reading A Discovery of Witches (imho)
the story doesn't really get going until over half way through the book!!

Well, this will be the sixth bad review I've heard/read. I own the first two books but have decided to give them to charity without reading them.

I have the first one and I've heard mixed things too...not sure about it, might give it a chance but I don't know

I've finally finished A Discovery of Witches and would definitely not recommend it! (I'll write a review when I have more time).
I've just started Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier and although only a few chapters in, I think I will like this one :)

message 207: by Sam (new)

Sam Arnold (samharnold) Have just started reading France or Prison by David Slater. Only read the first couple of pages but looks like it is going to be a good read.

I'm interested in reading that series...would you recommend it?

message 209: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'm currently reading a few books - I was reading two and then got sent loads of review copies so I need to concentrate on those now.
I'm reading Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and then a review copy =)

I've finished Rebecca and loved it. I will probably read another by Daphne Du Maurier before the end of the month..possibly The House on the Strand.
Currently I'm reading The Year of Reading Dangerously by Andy Miller. It's a very interesting and humourous true life account of the author trying to get back into reading. I'm enjoying this book.
I have also started The Martian by Andy Weir but haven't read enough to comment yet :)

I'm wanting to read The Martian soon but I've got Bout of Books 10.0 next week so I'm going to wait until after that

message 212: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'm currently reading several books as usual!

I decided to give Heart of Darkness another go and I'm about 25% through at the moment so can't say much about it yet.

I'm also reading The School for Good and Evil and am about halfway through. I'm really enjoying it. It's funny and lighthearted and I plan to finish it very soon.

I'm also struggling through Great Expectations too...it's just really slow =/

I'm almost halfway through The Martian and can't put it down. It's an amazing story! I've no idea how Andy Weir came up with all the technical stuff but it sounds credible.

I went camping over the weekend and knew I would have some down-time in the evenings, so I brought The Girl in the Road by Monica Byrne, a book I need to read for review (release date: May 20). I was really confused and wished I had brought something else I'm currently reading, including The Secret Of Crickley Hall, 1984, and House of Leaves. I did make a trip into town to the local used bookstore and picked up a copy of Mystic River. I've read about 60 pages so far and am really enjoying it, much more than I remember enjoying the film. So, I'm not sure what I'll focus on this week. We shall see.

message 215: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'm doing the Bout of Books 10.0 readathon this week. I managed to finish The School for Good and Evil yesterday and then reread Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children in pretty much one sitting, finishing it today! So I think I'll be going onto Hollow City because I was sent it for review and haven't read it yet =)

message 216: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette (jeanettes) I have just started 'Queen's Gambit' by Elizabeth Fremantle. I picked this up from a new charity shop that has just opened nearby for 50p.

I'm still reading The Year of Reading Dangerously. It's one of those books that is better read in small chunks to be appreciated. I also started reading Cinder by Marissa Meyer this morning and I'm really enjoying it. It's proving to be a very fast read.

message 218: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'm still reading Hollow City and Clockwork Princess but I decided to pick up As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner because it's on my university reading list for next year and I bought it today so I thought I'd try to get a head start on next semester.
Being only 248 pages I though it would be a quick read but it's been really slow to get into and the colloquialisms/accent are really difficult to get used to. I'm liking it so far but I'm reserving judgement at the moment =)

message 219: by Jen (new)

Jen | 468 comments Mod
I've finished Cinder which was an enjoyable read but a bit predictable. I will definitely read the sequels.
I've just started The House on the Strand by Daphne Du Maurier. It's an amazing story of drug induced time travel which is very well written.

message 220: by Mel (new)

Mel (mehy) I'm currently reading A Game of Thrones. I'm really enjoying it but.... as I have already watched the TV series I find myself not wanting to read any further as I know something horrible is about to happen.

I've been a bit "MIA" this past month. I'm currently reading The Color of Rain The Color of Rain by Cori McCarthy by Cori McCarthy. It's technically categorized as YA Science Fiction, but it really should be categorized as New Adult that takes place in space. The science fiction is soft and while the story follows 16 year old Rain, it's about intergalactic human sex trafficking, contagious disease, murder, physical abuse...it's definitely not YA. I am really enjoying it, believe it or not, considering the subject matter. The writing is great!

I've decided to finish The Year of Reading Dangerously by Andy Miller before starting anything else. I've been in the middle of this book for weeks because I got so distracted by Daphne Du Maurier (it's killing me not to be reading one of her books at the moment but I don't want to get into a rut).

I know what you mean. I've been tinkering through 1984 for almost a month and have actually decided to put it down, even though it's a May-June-July pick for us. I just felt myself getting into a rut.

message 224: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I've been similar recently...books have been taking me forever to get through even when I'm enjoying them and I can't seem to get into a classic at all at the moment.
I'm about 77% through The Martian by Andy Weir and I'm really enjoying it so hope to ginish that then pick up Emma =)

Looking forward to what you think of The Martian. I've been eyeing it at the library.

I've just started 84 Charing Cross Road by Helen Hanff and Emma for the classics read along. I'm enjoying both although haven't read much of them yet.

message 228: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I started Emma but am only 3 chapters in at the moment. I just haven't in the mood for classics recently and it's annoying but I don't want to force myself to read if I'm not enjoying it, I'd rather wait til I'm in that mood. I might try an audiobook instead whilst I'm doing some of my illustration work.

I'm also reading Invisibility by Andrea Cremer and David Levithan. I usually love Levithan's work but this book is annoying me and I'm only a third of the way through. I'll finish it because it's really fast paced but it's not the best. You never know though, it might improve.

I'm also reading Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare still but again I'm not really in the mood for it right now.

The one I'm concentrating on is The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. After hearing so many amazing things about it recently I just had to try it again. It's been sitting on my shelf for too long unread and so far I love it! I've not really read any high fantasy apart from LOTR so it's a new experience =)

I haven't purchased The Name of the Wind yet but intend to very soon. I couldn't decide which format to read it in but I think I will opt for the ebook for my Kobo. This way I will definitely not break the spine lol.

I'm really glad I have the paperback (even if the font is tiiiiny!). I'll probably end up breaking the spine but I'm really enjoying the book so far so I don't mind too much =)

I intend to read the first two on kobo and then buy the whole set in hardback if I really like them :)

message 232: by [deleted user] (new)

I have been dancing around buying The Name of the Wind at the bookstore for about a month now. I end up just not picking it up for whatever reason. (I always make some excuse when, in reality, it's because of the page count.)

I'm currently reading five books. For this reading group I'm working on Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (I'm about 60 pages into that) and Emma (I just started that yesterday and have only made it a few pages.).

For another book club we're reading Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. So far, I'm really enjoying this one (I'm only about 20 pages into that one.).

Finally, I'm still reading The Bus Driver Who Wanted to Be God and Other Stories, one or two stories each day (they are only 3-5 pages each), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows for fun.

So much going on. It's been difficult for me to stay on track of reading only one book at a time the last couple of months. I want to read so many things and I'm in the mood for different things at different times.

I'm currently reading The Crane Wife by Patrick Ness. It was on my radar anyway so when I came across the brand new hardback in the library I just couldn't resist! So far it's really good :)

I've just started Lips Touch: Three Times written by Laini Taylor and beautifully illustrated by her husband Jim Di Bartolo. I found this one at my recent library trawl. I like to bump library books up my tbr list as I feel guilty about keeping them from other readers for too long lol

message 236: by Jen (new)

I really didn't enjoy Lips Touch. The middle story was ok and the illustrations were good but the other two story's were just mediocre.
I'm now reading The Secret Place by Tana French. This was sent to me by the publisher and although it's quite a large tome, it's proving to be quite a quick read as the story is so intriguing :)

I thought I would have enjoyed it more as I really liked The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories by Susanna Clarke

message 239: by Mel (new)

Mel (mehy) I have just finished the Divergent trilogy and I have no idea where to go next.....I may look through my thrillers for a complete change of action. I do feel a little book hangover but I will fight it ... I will!!

message 240: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I just finished Insurgent so I've moved onto Dorothy Must Die which is interesting so far. I've also decided to carry on with Lee Mack's Mack the Life: The Autobiography, which I started months ago but I want to finish it soon!

I'm still reading 1984 but don't want to rush it so have just started The Garden of Darkness by Gillian Murray Kendal. It's a YA dystopian that was sent to me for review. It's really well written and I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far :)

message 242: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'm reading Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige at the moment and really enjoying it. I love twists on classics and this is a really fast-paced one =)

I've just started One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn and by complete contrast The Second Book of General Ignorance: Everything You Think You Know Is (Still) Wrong which I picked up in the bargain bin at whsmith :)

I read that one earlier this year. I wasn't really keen on it, it wasn't bad but it didn't have the same atmosphere as the film. I'd be very interested in hearing what you think :)

I have a sudden interest in Russian literature and this one is amazingly well written. I'm really appreciating it so far.

If you haven't tried him already, I'd recommend Stanislaw Lem - sci-fi/philosophy with a little satire thrown in.

message 249: by [deleted user] (new)

Already a bit burnt out with Dune by Frank Herbert, I picked up Night by Elie Wiesel. That will probably depress me right back in to Dune. We shall see.

message 250: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'm reading The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss but I'm taking my time with it as it's really good but I'm not in the mood for fantasy at the moment. I'm on a big classics kick so I'm trying Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift (although I like it so far, the edition I have from the library is really annoying so it may be one I put on my Christmas list and then try again at some point) and I'm trying to finish up Poirot Investigates by Agatha Christie as well as the first part of Return of the King by Tolkien =)
