I've just finished Moving Pictures by Terry Pratchett. I really enjoyed it. Some of his books start off brilliant and end up a bit disappointing but this one was the other way around. I found it hard to get into but then it turned out to be one of my favourites from Discworld.
I'm now reading The City of Dreaming Books by Walter Moers. It's a weird book about books set in a world of dinosaurs. The illustrations are really good and I'm hoping it will be an interesting read.

Jenna Morrison (jennamorrison) | 12 comments I'm currently reading A Dance With Dragons Part 1: Dreams and Dust. I started a while ago but had to stop while the latest Game of Thrones season was on because it just gets confusing if I'm watching book 3 and reading 5 5 at the same time! I'm obsessed with Game of Thrones and love both the books (which I started first) and the show!

I must be the only person on the planet that has not watched/read any of them!

Tülin | 5 comments I like to read quite a lot of books at once, but I'll probably finish The Tenderness of Wolves by Sted Penny fairly soon. It's an okay read, but a little boring at places.

I've read 65% of The City of Dreaming Books and it's really good! I love the story, it's totally unpredictable and full of twists and turns.
Hopefully I'll finish it tomorrow and make a start on my group reads although I don't know which to choose first, they all look so good!

message 60: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'm currently reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, I've never read the last two books so I've been rereading the series in preparation :)

Lacey Stephens | 29 comments The Game of Thrones series is AWESOME!! I am currently reading The Space Between by Kristie Cook. It's great so far. I loved her "Soul Savers" series.

I've just started the third Thursday Next book by Jasper Fforde "The Well of Lost Plots". Hopefully it's as good as the others.

EXCELLENT!!! Master plotter Mr. Doyle!

I own the first and fourth one for some reason....let me know how the first one is :)

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

My husband finished the Wheel of Time series a few months ago. He says it really starts to drag in the later books when Brandon Sanderson picked it up, but that it was "okay" which if you know him is a shining recommendation. (He has almost 800 books on Goodreads has only given 4 a 5-star rating.)

I read the first one years ago, and enjoyed it which is why I decided to wait until I had them all before I read it again, as I didn't want to have to wait for each new book to be published. I was a bit worried that I may have changed my mind about it over the last 20 years, but it is well-written and pulls you in from the beginning. Several of my friends who have read the series agree with Katherine about the fact that the story loses momentum around book 8 or 9 but that it picks up again towards the end.

I also had the books in a strange random order as I was buying them when I chanced across them in second hand shops, remaindered in book shops, or as used copies from awesomebooks. I picked up numbers 12 and 13 as brand new hardbacks in a sale at my local bookshop for 1 euro each!!

You should definitely give it a go anyway. :)

I had to pick a book for a train journey yesterday so I wanted something small and light. I managed to pick up Wars of the Worlds recently in a charity shop for 75p, it's in mint condition so I'm very happy with my find.
I was shocked (and pleased) how different from the film the story is. It's a brilliant read so far and I love HG Wells' style of writing.

message 69: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'm currently reading Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. It's really good so far but now I'm really wanting to start the first book in the Wheel of Time series!

I'm currently reading Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde from the groups last reading choice..I fell behind with my 'to read' schedule due to my holiday lol. I intend to catch up with The Night Circus very soon too. But before that I am looking forward to reading at least two of the books from the read starting today - The Japanese Devil Fish Girl and Other Unnatural Attractions by Robert Rankin which I've had on my shelf for ages and Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson which I've just ordered.

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) This thread's gone a bit quiet!
I'm currently reading Pride & Prejudice for university and am surprisingly enjoying it, though it is quite slow at the moment. I'm also reading The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey - with starting back at uni tomorrow I wanted to get a headstart on next months reads =)

I had to read Pride and Prejudice at school and didn't enjoy it :( I'm currently reading Thank You Jeeves by PG Wodehouse. I needed a book that I knew I would enjoy after finishing In The Night Garden which was a chore to endure.
I'm looking forward to reading The 5th Wave and discussing it with our little group :)

I can't really get into P.G.Wodehouse but I'm hoping to at some point as I have a few of his books!
I'm nearly halfway through The 5th Wave and it is good but there is something bothering me about it...might be resolved though =)

I would rate PG Wodehouse as one of my favourite authors although I've only read Jeeves and Wooster so far (I own all The Blandings books too!)

message 76: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'll definitely be trying some of his other books at some point but I want to concentrate on my uni books and the book club picks for now

message 77: by Stephen (new)

Stephen I've FINALLY finished The Man Who Was Thursday (followed by a quick scan of Wikipedia to find out WTF that was all about!) ..so now I'm reading War of the Worlds on my phone and Lucifer's Hammer in olde-worlde paperback. Then on to Raising Steam/Pratchett and see if I can keep up with JGRS.

I've given up on the idea of catching up on past choices but I'm trying to keep up with the new ones now!
I'm currently having to read a lot of slower novels for university...Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe at the moment...so book club picks have to come after those sadly

Stephen ..at least it's not just me struggling then. It's certainly keeping me on my toes; I've read a lot more than I would normally - Jolly Good!

That's the main point of it though I think, well apart from discussing books =D
I just have a 12 book long reading list and since we're studying a novel a week for one module (of three) I have to get one a week finished and annotated...

I've found myself reading lots more too! In fact, the more I that I read the faster I'm getting - almost like running down a hill and I can't stop lol (I'm not complaining though)

I get like that with easier YA or just fast-paced books, hence why when I go from reading for fun to reading for uni I struggle a bit with the slower pace. That's why I'm really enjoying The 5th Wave as it is just so fast paced that it is a relatively quick read even though it's quite long =)

Talking of fast paced/easy reads...I recently purchased a book bundle of M.C. Beaton novels from WHSmiths. I'm not sure if they're my cup of tea but at £4.99 for 10 it was hard to resist. I'm currently reading Agatha Raisin and the Wizard of Evesham which is incredibly easy and quite a short book which probably won't take more than a day to finish. This fits in with my resolution to expand my book genres this year :)

Good luck with that! At Uni, I studied engineering textbooks too much - which really slowed me down. It took years for me to speed up again, so I could read for enjoyment.

Jen wrote: "..the more I that I read the faster I'm getting..."
You were lightning-fast at the start. In comparison, you'd have to use a time-capture system to see me turning a page ;)

I've been give a list of 13 classics so it's slow but as Jen said, it helps expand what genres I read

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I have so many books on my 'currently reading' list at the moment...does anyone else read multiple books at the same time?

I've decided to finish The Ring Goes East by J.R.R.Tolkien - it's the 4th in the 7 book boxset and I've been reading it for months!
Having finished The 5th Wave (which I can't wait to talk about) I'm reading Pride and Prejudice (for uni), A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan, The Geek's Guide to Dating by Eric Smith (review copy), Poirot Investigates (short story collection) and The Way by Mary E. Twomey (an ebook review copy)....so many books!

I tend to read one book at a time unless I'm reading one of short stories in which case I like to leave a gap between them. At the moment I'm reading "Space Captain Smith" by Toby Frost. It's very good. It reminds me of a cross between A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and Retribution Falls. The humour is particularly good and very British. I intend to make a start on the group reads when I've finished this one.

I'm currently reading Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel (I'm not in the mood for anything else that I'm in the middle of...) I'm going to be reading the classics again soon but I need a break from my uni reads at the moment

I'm currently reading The Water Room by Christopher Fowler. It's the second in the Bryant and May detective stories. As with the first book, it is very well written with a good mix of intrigue, humour and a history lesson of London. I'm really enjoying this series and would recommend them :)

I'm reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline at the moment. It was one of the choices months and months ago but I thought I'd pick it up as it's been on my shelf forever and I needed a break between reading the classics...it's really good so far - full of video games, 80s references and action =)

I've just started reading The Time Machine as part of our current group read. Yesterday I started to read The Ladies of Grace Adieu by Suzanna Clarke. I've decided to read each story individually over time as it's a collection of short stories. Some relate directly to Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. I enjoyed the first episode but found the second story a bit of a let down.

Welcome to the group!
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland In A Ship Of Her Own Making (yes, I did copy/paste that from your comment! It's a long title) is meant to be really good. I've taken it out of the library a few times but never gotten around to it but I'm sure I'll pick it up at some point.
Are you think of joining in with the book club picks this turn, Mel?

It's a discount book shop so at the moment the books are mostly £1....that £25 budget wouldn't help me limit my TBR at all XD
