I'd love to hear your thoughts on The Cuckoos Calling...I have it on my shelf but haven't gotten around to it yet...

I've heard great things about that one! Heard it's pretty creepy though...I've never actually seen a physical copy in a book shop

Anna (goodreadscomanna_shuk) I'm reading Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. 50% done with it and it's absolutely beautiful!

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'll have to look into it =)

I'm currently reading Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes and it's really interesting so far but I'm so worried about Charlie as he remembers his bad childhood that I can't stop thinking about it xD

Why didn't you want to read The Host? It's a great story. It's hard to follow in the beginning. But once you get past chapter 5 (I think), then the story really picks up. And, as usual, the book is so much better than the movie.

I'm currently reading Gris Grimly's Tales of Mystery and Madness. The stories are by Edgar Allan Poe but the illustrations are amazing by Gris (as always).

It's not that I didn't want to read it (because I really do want to), I just didn't think I could commit to an 800+ page book. This year I've been having weird "panic attacks" when I try to read monster books, like they are just too overwhelming, and I've been focusing more on 200-400 page books (usually sticking closer to the 200 pagers). While I'm not really enjoying the romance as the main focus of Obsidian, the writing is good and the characters are terribly flawed and I love them.

message 160: by Lacey (new)

Lacey Stephens | 29 comments Huh! I had no idea it was that large. I just checked because I didn't think it was a big book. Amazon has it listed as 656 so it's a little smaller than you thought. But honestly, after the 5th chapter, I found it went quickly. I have no idea about the sizes, but if you want some decent "alien" books, I liked The Fifth Wave and Ender's Game

My mass market paperback edition is 875. I definitely want to read Ender's Game. And, I think we have completely different opinions of what a "big book" is. Hahaha!

The Haunting of Hill House audiobook just came in at my library so I downloaded it. I'm already 12% done with it. The narrator is awesome.

Also started Beloved by Toni Morrison today.

And, just decided to also start The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Full plate!

I'm struggling to finish Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass. I have a beautiful edition with colour illustrations and quite enjoyed the first part of the book. I'm really not enjoying the second part. I had the same problem when I read it as a child but I'm determined to get to the end this time only because I love the illustrations lol

I'm on the last section of Wool now and still enjoying it. In fact, I've just ordered Shift and Dust which are very reasonably priced at Amazon uk :)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'm reading Fire & Flood and also How To Have An Almost Perfect Marriage...so a YA dystopian and a humour book...I'm enjoying both at the moment =)

I started Teen Spirit by Francesca Lia Block.

I'm on Part 4 of Wool. I had a crazy week last week chaperoning a 3 day field trip with my daughter's class. It's taken me almost a week to get caught up so I didn't have any time to read. I finally got a few minutes to read today.

message 174: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished Obsidian by Jennifer Armentrout and decided to knock down Teen Spirit by Francesca Lia Block.

I finished Wool yesterday and gave it 5 stars. I really enjoyed it. It reminded me of an extended version of The Machine Stops by E.M. Forster. I was going to read Shift (prequel to Wool) next but decided to pick up Insurgent instead. I wasn't sure if I was in the mood for this one but soon started racing through it.

Yesterday I started reading The Gospel of Loki by Joanne M. Harris. It's the first book I've read of this genre and wasn't sure if I'd like it (I have to admit it was the cover artwork that sold it to me). Anyway, I'm pleased to report that this book is amazing (so far). The story is written from Loki's point of view and it's so arrogantly funny, it's hard to put down.

message 182: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't been keeping up on this thread. I'm currently reading Rotters. It is amazing!! An older YA contemporary about a boy, his son and the macabre.

I've seen a few of them but this book is not related to them in storyline but definitely related as to the personalities of the characters. I'm reading it with the actor's voice of Loki. It's hilarious!

Then I will add it to my list. I like Loki even though he's a "bad guy".

Loki is the best "bad guy" ever! He's even more "Loki" in this book, you will not be disappointed :)

message 187: by Lacey (new)

Lacey Stephens | 29 comments I finished Wool. I really liked it. I will probably read the "prequels" at some point. I also just finished Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple for my neighborhood's book club. It's a cute story. We all WANT to say or do something to the crazy ladies of the school PTA or a few neighbors...Bernadette does what we all think of doing but etiquette prevents us from actually doing! I'm currently re-reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon to prepare for the upcoming STARZ series this Summer. This is an awesome book (the first in a series).

Lacey Stephens | 29 comments Jen wrote: "Loki is the best "bad guy" ever! He's even more "Loki" in this book, you will not be disappointed :)"

My son is 9 years old so I've taken him to see all of the "Avengers" movies. My daughter (who is 11) doesn't like some of the bad guys because they are 'scary' so she doesn't always go with us. However, she loves the Thor movies; it might have something to do with the dreamy Thor ;-) But I'm sure it's because the "bad guy" is funny. One of my favorite lines in Avengers...
Thor: He is of Asgard and he is my brother!
Black Widow: He killed 80 people in 2 days.
Thor [deadpan]: He’s adopted.
And the other favorite of my kids... the "Puny God" scene... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30lGr...

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'm powering through The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare at the moment for a readathon I'm taking part in.

I reread Clockwork Angel over 2 days because it was so fast-paced and, strangely for me, I went straight onto the second book, Clockwork Prince and am loving that too =)

message 191: by [deleted user] (new)

Friday I started Cities of Refuge by Michael Helm. While it's beautifully written and the characters are tragic in their coping methods, it's very slow-paced and character-driven. I just came off that train with Beloved by Toni Morrison, so I think I'm putting down Cities of Refuge for now and I'll be committing more to Cemetery Girl by David Bell. I read the prologue last night and think I could get in to this quickly. I'm still listening to the audiobook of The Great Gatsby. It's read by Tim Robbins who is an amazing actor and he's a great voice actor too. I'm really enjoying it. He reads it quite quickly too. I think it's only a four or five hour audiobook. Hoping to finish this by the end of the week. I still have the audiobook of Persuasion checked out and want to at least start that this month because I know my 1984 buddy read with my son will be starting in May some time.

I've just finished The Gospel of Loki and gave it 4 stars. I loved the book but found the humour got a bit too predictable by the end, hence it lost 1 star.
I've started Allegiant. This one differs from the other two books in the Divergent series as some chapters are written from Tobias' point of view.

I'm almost half way through A Discovery of Witches and although I like the writing style, the story is like walking through treacle...it's nice and sweet but hard to get through as not a lot has actually happened!
Hopefully it will pick up.

I've just finished A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and can fully recommend it but make sure that you have a box of tissues handy :(
I'm going to carry on with A Discovery of Witches as I don't like giving up on a book.

message 199: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'm currently reading One Day by David Nicholls and although I like it as I'm reading it, I don't seem to be wanting to pick it up after I've put it down for a while.
I like the story so far, though I can't say I like the characters at this point. They're extremely realistic though and I love the way that the story is told; one day a year for 20 years I think. Just gives you an idea about how small decisions can affect your future.

message 200: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 30, 2014 10:52AM) (new)

My husband bribed me into date night with the promise of ice cream and the purchase of a new book from my favorite book store. He came through. He bought me THE SECRET OF CRICKLEY HALL by James Herbert and I started reading it as soon as we got home (because it is my promise to never bring a book to, or read a book during, date night). I'm 31 pages in. Seems a bit stereotypical; I mean, HELLO, the dog is afraid to go into the house, you crazy, oblivious humans. That should tell you SOMETHING. I enjoy how Herbert leaves each chapter as a cliff-hanger. Makes it hard to stop reading. I wish it wasn't 600+ pages. I have things I need to start tomorrow. I still need to read THE ROSIE PROJECT. I'm just not feeling contemporary right now. I'm really into my mystery/thriller/horror stuff. I just need to not buy anymore books in said genre because I have plenty to occupy my time.
