Steven (gallifreyan1218) Welcome to the MANGO TANGO Books by the Numbers Challenge!

Everyone loves a good series! Plus, we need to get our numbers up for the Tower Challenge, so let's get reading!

Here's the scoop: we are going to read books from series. The same series, different series, doesn't really matter. What will matter is what NUMBER in the series each book falls. The LONGEST string of consecutive books will win.

Read the numbers in any order you want. Read book seven of the Harry Potter, then book two of the Sookie Stackhouse series -- it's your call! But be warned -- if there is a break in the sequence at the end of the mini-challenge, we'll take the longest "run" as your score!

Here's an example:
Barb reads 7 series books, numbered 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8.
Evana reads 7 series books, numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
Barb's longest sequence is 5-8, so she gets FOUR for her score. Evana's longest connected sequence is 1-7, for a score of SEVEN. EVANA would win... unless Barb finished a series book numbered 4, which would connect the full sequence and provide her with a score of EIGHT.

You DO NOT need to start with ONE. Any consecutive runs of books will count towards your score.

In the case of a tie, I'll total up the pages read for each of the tied winning sequences, and the person with the highest page count will win the gift card.

If that doesn't make sense, please ask questions. As stated before, the books don't have to be from the same series.

ALL THE TOWER CHALLENGE RULES APPLY: Rereads are okay as long as it's been at least a year, page counts need to be over 160 pages, no graphic novels, etc.

This mini-challenge will last from Saturday May 18th until Friday May 31st. Any books shelved as FINISHED during these days will count towards the challenge.

I'll keep a post following this one to track our books, so just post here when you've completed one after the challenge has started.

THERE WILL BE AN ACTUAL PRIZE FOR THE WINNER OF THIS MINI-CHALLENGE, as long as the winner has read at least 5 books total. I'll update you all once I've decided on the exact prize, but it will be along the lines of an Amazon/B&N eGift Card.

Please post here by FRIDAY to let me know if you are participating! :) (Also, I will be participating for fun, but not competing for the prize, as I'm providing the prize!)

BARB: 8
LISA: 5
EVANA: 4
NANCY: 1
KARLA: 4
SHEILA: 1
SALLIE: 1

(Don't forget, the scoreboard only takes into account consecutive numbers, so you might have read more books than your score shows, but the score reflects the longest numerical order string of books!)

message 5: by Barb (new)

Barb I'll play, but I'm not sure how many I can read without messing up my read-what-you-already-have challenge in another group :)

message 6: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Shall I make it go into June then? :D

message 7: by Barb (last edited May 15, 2013 08:17PM) (new)

Barb LOL Nah, I'll just do what I can this time around, and hope to do better the *next time :) After work tomorrow, I'll look at my series list and see what I'm "allowed" to read LOL

message 8: by Karla (new)

Karla I'm in.

message 9: by Diane L (new)

Diane L I'm in. Got to say I could get more read if I didn't spend so much time rummaging through the TBR for the exact book needed for another challenge. Not that I mind or I wouldn't sign up for so many challenges.

I already have a 6 and 7 lined up. Now to fill those first five slots...

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 240 comments Yay.. My first Mango Tango mini challenge. I'm going to try for 6.

message 11: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Oh, and don't forget everyone, you don't have to start with 1. :) as long as they are consecutive you are good!

message 12: by Barb (new)

Barb Evana wrote: "I'm in. Got to say I could get more read if I didn't spend so much time rummaging through the TBR for the exact book needed for another challenge."

Or taking the time to update all those challenges online LOL I feel your pain, Evana :)

message 13: by Barb (new)

Barb Steven wrote: "Oh, and don't forget everyone, you don't have to start with 1. :) as long as they are consecutive you are good!"

Yay, thank you! I'm likely to start with #1 anyhow, but it's nice to know I don't have to :)

message 14: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilalynn) | 21 comments ok i will join. Lets see if I can get some serious reading done :) What are the dates for this challenge?

message 15: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Yeah! Just thought the consecutive run was easier than trying to force everything into a "box"...

Plus like you've mentioned before, some of us series-obsessed would like to make dents in the series we're in before we read book one in another! haha

message 16: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Sheila,

This mini-challenge will last from Saturday May 18th until Friday May 31st. Any books shelved as FINISHED during these days will count towards the challenge.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

I will give it a try as now, i'm done with school can focus more with reading

message 18: by Steven (last edited May 16, 2013 01:51PM) (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) So, current list of participants:

Steven, Barb, Evana, Karla, Lisa, Sheila, Nancy, Jane

message 19: by Jane (new)

Jane | 206 comments Of course I am in. There is just no way I can say no to another challenge LOL.

I am reading a nummer one just now but I am hopefully finished that one by tomorrow. But I have several other books lined up that are useful.

message 20: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Just save the last chapter until Saturday and you can use it for this challenge!

Hopefully I can figure out if Amazon/B&N allows email gift cards to be sent internationally!

message 21: by Barb (new)

Barb Since it's all done via email, I don't see why that would be an issue. But, what do I know? :)

message 22: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) So, we might have to figure out a way to get any of you internationals a prize.

Do those of you who live outside the US use Amazon to purchase books? Do you buy the ebook version?

We'll figure out a prize to make it fair for all if we can't work that out.

I'm pretty dense, I should have worked out the international issue before I posted the challenge!

message 23: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Yeah, I assume the same Barb, but they might not be able to pay for content that way. I dunno.

Guess we'll see, eh?

message 24: by Jane (new)

Jane | 206 comments I have both a amazon.com and co.uk account and as I for 7 years have lived far from any bookshop I read mostly Kindle books.

So an Amazon gift Card is no problem for me.

message 25: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Okay, that is perfect. Hopefully Lisa (from Australia) can handle that as well :)

message 26: by Karla (last edited May 16, 2013 01:51PM) (new)

Karla Steven wrote: "So, current list of participants:

Steven, Barb, Evana, Kayla, Lisa, Sheila, Nancy"

I, Karla, am in. Not Kayla, who is too busy with school.

message 27: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Doh, I'm sorry. The names are so close and I was looking at Kayla's bookshelf verifying the page count on her new book when I typed that out.

I'll go fix it now!

message 28: by Karla (new)

Karla No problem. We use the same computer, so I thought I had signed up under her name. Just wanted to make sure it was correct.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 240 comments Yep, Lisa from Australia can surely handle that... I have a kindle with an Amazon US account. You just have to email me the gift voucher... if I win...Haha, I might be putting the cart before the horse, so to speak.

message 30: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) That's what I needed to know!

Hopefully we can add some serious books to our total :)

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) Good grief. I'm in. Can't resist another challenge. I seriously need book therapy. Lol

message 32: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) We all do. But hey, we can all "suffer" in good company here!

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) That's why I keep coming back lol.

message 34: by Barb (new)

Barb I think that's why we're ALL here LOL

Steven, please tell me that this starts and ends according to our local time on the appropriate days? Or are you going to choose one time zone as the beginning/end times?

message 35: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Nah, just the dates. As long as its marked on goodreads as finished during the date range, it will count!

message 36: by Barb (new)

Barb Sounds good :) But bear in mind that GR works on Pacific Time, so if I mark a book as finished at 1am on Sunday morning, it's going to show up on GR as finished at 10pm Saturday night. *grumbles*

message 37: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) As long as you post it here, should be fine.

Maybe everyone should post date/time finished in addition to all that info from post two!

message 38: by Barb (new)

Barb Yeah, I think we're all honest enough in something like this not to say we read a book we didn't read or whatever ... Sorry, it's late, I haven't slept well, and my brain has shut down for the night. Maybe I should take that as a clue to go to bed instead of spending time here on GR? LOL

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 240 comments working out the time difference to Australia is a nightmare. I think we are 19 hours ahead of Goodreads time.

message 40: by Barb (new)

Barb Right now, it's 8:17pm on Thursday, May 16, on Goodreads time (Pacific Time). Google tells me it's 1:17pm on Friday, May 17, in Sydney, Australia, right now. Does that help, Lisa?

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
Personally, I would use the countdown site that was used for the May R-a-T, showing both beginning and ending times.

message 42: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) I think as long as very one posts their local date/time when they finish it, that should suffice... I can't see any of us lying about it!

Besides, all these time zones get so complicated haha

message 43: by Barb (last edited May 17, 2013 03:48PM) (new)

Barb Sounds good to me :)

I picked up some of my possible books for this challenge at work today. Several others are on their way to me from other libraries in our system, so I'll probably have those in hand Monday. I even dug the ones I own out of the multiple piles of books sitting around the house! The point of all of this is: I'm ready for the challenge to begin! LOL

Aside to Sallie: Yes, these were all on my library list when the Double Dare challenge began :) I just hadn't gotten around to reading them yet!

message 44: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) I never lost faith in you, Barb! ;)

message 45: by Barb (new)

Barb Thanks for the vote of confidence, Steven :)

message 46: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Everyone ready? It's about to start in my time zone! :) For some of you it's already started!

message 47: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) The game is ON! I'm about to hit the board with the first book! :D

message 48: by Steven (last edited May 18, 2013 07:03PM) (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Finished my number FOUR:

Inferno by Dan Brown
Robert Langdon book #4
Inferno (Robert Langdon, #4) by Dan Brown
464 pages

message 49: by Jane (last edited May 18, 2013 04:42PM) (new)

Jane | 206 comments I didn't get as much reading done the last few as I had hoped. Too tired after work. Not good for my current challenge to read 4 books this week.

But good for this challenge LOL.

It means I have finished my number ONE:

Interview with the Vampire
The Vampire Chronicles #1
Interview with the Vampire (The Vampire Chronicles, #1) by Anne Rice
353 pages

I have chosen to put that edition in as my read book. I am actually reading The Vampire Chronicles Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned (Anne Rice) by Anne Rice but I am not going to continue straight away with the next one.

message 50: by Barb (new)

Barb Steven wrote: "The game is ON! I'm about to hit the board with the first book! :D"

WTG Steven! I worked all day today, and am taking a few moments to sit and veg before I cook dinner, then I plan to get back to reading my #3 in a series book. I hope to finish it tonight, but since I work again tomorrow, I can't guarantee I'll be able to stay up that late tonight :\
