Belinda Vitale | 3 comments I started reading this book when I was in grade school, and since everyone around me considered it "too old for me," it was taken away before I got too far into it.
What I do remember, is this kid is trapped in a cabinet, closet or something looking out at what I think was the kitchen. Laying there was a bunch of broken makeup and perfume bottles, and yeah her mom was also in the middle of the mess.
The (I think it was a girl) looked out every day in fear that the person who did it would come back, as she remembered things she used to do with her mom, as the feeling of "cool water flowing behind her eyes," came with each memory. I think it signified she had psychic abilities or something, but being so long ago, I can't remember for sure.
Any help would be appreciated.

Alycia (alyciac) | 46 comments How long ago was grade school? Are we talking about 10 years, or 40? I'm assuming that this would have been an adult book (as opposed to YA) - is that right? Or did you not get far enough in it to be able to tell?

This would have been about 30 years ago, and yes an adult book. I can assume that it was written back in the late 70's to early 80's.

Barbara Brien | 151 comments There is a scene like you describe in The Unforgiving Minutes, which was written in 1988.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Sounds like Amy Girl Amy Girl by Bari Wood

Couple more descriptions:
Eight-year-old Amy is the calamitous kid in question, introduced by Wood in the first of several violence/sex exploitation scenes by having her rummy dad lock her in a kitchen closet just before he beats her mom to death. Amy watches through the keyhole, and for the next two days, as she peers at Mom's decaying body, something cold and malignant grows in the closet with her.

And

Left alone when her father kills her mother, nine-year-old Amy Kaslov is taken in by a policeman and his family as she gradually comes to recognize her psychic ability, the power of absolute mental domination.
