Mishmash Challenge 2013 (Suggestions/Questions)
This list should have some books on it that could work: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/29...
I'm leaning towards this one:
Just trying to figure out if it fits, but I think so.

A few suggestions off the top of my head:

You might also find these lists useful:
Chinese and Japanese Fantasy: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/30... (just check that it uses the mythology, and not just the setting)

Are we going to use the challenge feature where you use a specific bookshelf or follow the normal posting of our reads?
New Challenge Tracker Feature: http://www.goodreads.com/challenges/1...
It can also be seen on the home page :)

I have made a bookshelve for this challenge but the participants are still on 0. Do I need to do anything else?
It is because it only starts on the 1st of June. Shall I set the date earlier so everyone can sign up?
Oh, ok. We only start reading on 1 June right!? So I guess that on that date my shelf will be counted amongst the participants. For me there is no need to set the date earlier.
Well you will have to enter your shelf manually on the 1st of June, and each time you add something to your shelf you have to go and update on the tracker. It doesn't do it automatically :(
Nope keep it. When 1st of June starts it wants you to add the amount of books you are going to read (30) and a shelf name. So you add that shelf name.
Then when you read a book you add it to the shelf and go to the tracker and say update.
Then you fill in the 30 books thing again and give your shelf name again, it will then register 1 book and say you have completed 1/30 etc.

Thanks!
This can help for 10.

Don't you want to put the tasks in the top message here as well? I'm flipping between screens to keep track of tasks (get diverted and then cannot remember where I was with which task!) Blame old age or post exam stress.
Thanks!

Thanks. Djinn Rummy it is, as I still need an H for the A-Z Author.

For this task, what are the rules regarding:
- authors who use their initials, eg. S.M. Wheeler. Do we have to go and find out what their first names are?
- authors who use a second name eg. Joyce Carol Oates or Thomas H Cook? Do we just not count the second name?

Would Sarah Lotz be suitable for this? Besides publishing under her own name, she has used Lily Herne (for two books written with her daughter Savannah) and S.L. Grey (for two books written with Louis Greenberg). Technically she has "published under at least 3 names"; it's just that two of those are for collaborations.

Suggestions, anyone? No romance. Preferably no YA unless you don't know of anything else.

Shoot, that is my task so I should answer. Sorry I wasn't paying any attention this week.
You use the name as used on the cover of the book you're reading. So second names, initials, etc etc etc if it is used in the name as printed and as the name used to write the book you count it. If the name on the cover is a penname then that is the name that counts.
So e.g. J.K. Rowling has 9 letters and counts even though we all know that her real name is Joanne Rowling (which would not count since it has 13 letters) and the K comes from her grandmother.

I asked a question last night, but somehow it got deleted, so I am asking again.
For task 23 read a collection of short stories, essays or letters. Would a collection of 3 novellas do? Or should it really be short short stories?

Three novellas is fine. I will accept any collection composed of works shorter than 150 pages.
Just a note (for everyone): essays have to be standalone works in the same way that short stories are standalone. You can't count the chapters in a work of non-fiction as essays.
Great! Thanks. I have several short stories collections that would work but I really wanted to read this one.

Correct you make a shelf. Then when you read a book you add it to the shelf and go to the tracker and say update.
Then you fill in the section where you say 30 books and give your shelf name, it will then register 1 book and say you have completed 1/30 etc.

Task 10 and/or 16 - is "Stet" as in the publishing term that means "Let it stand" a verb or a noun?

Can be used as both:
stet
/stet/
Verb
Let it stand (used as an instruction on a printed proof to indicate that a correction or alteration should be ignored).
Noun
Such an instruction made on a printed proof.

That's perfect. The book is made up completely of diary entries. It's one of my all time favorites. The Countess of Ranfurly's diary entries for the 2nd World War during which she was secretary to a number of high ranking generals from Egypt to Baghdad. It is a fascinating read since she was a civil servant, but involved in so much of the action.

It's called To War with Whitaker: The Wartime Diaries of the Countess of Ranfurly, 1939-1945. If you're interested in history, it's a really unusual view of the war.
Lu, for task 20 I need a title that refers to the written word. Is a title that actually contains the specific title of another book too specific? I'm reading Howards End Is on the Landing: A Year of Reading from Home where Howards End is the actual title of another book?
I think it is too specific :( Also if you don't know Howards End is a book, you wouldn't know if someone didn't tell you.

1. Read a book (fiction or non-fiction) based on Asian mythology
2. Read a book where someone on the cover is wearing a uniform (school uniform / policeman / firefighter etc.)
3. Read a book that has a sword fight in it.
4. Read a book where the title includes an element of the periodic table e.g.helium, carbon etc. The full table is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodic...
5. Read a book that has an adjective in the tittle.
6. Read a book with a colour in the title
7. Read a book by an author that is new to you.
(any author so long as you have never read anything by them before.)

9. Read a book by an author whose first and last name start with the same letter.
10. Read a book that has a 1 word title that is less than or 4 letters long.
11. Read a book that is a rewrite of (e.g. from another perspective)/sequel to another book/series that is not written by the same author as the original.
12. Read a book with a plot based on a friendship, but not a romantic one.
Note: it's fine if one or more of the friends have romantic relationships, but the main plot should be based on a purely platonic friendship.
13. Read a book that has been written by an author who has published under at least 3 names e.g Jayne Anne Krentz who has also published as Amanda Quick and Jayne Castle. I find this website very useful for those kind of facts http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/
14. Read a book with at least 3 words in the title. The first and last words in the title must start with the same letter. e.g Dead until dark or Lover at last.
15. Read the latest book in a series that already has four or more books. So trilogies don't count. You don't have to read the earlier books in the series.

17. Read a book that has an ordinal number in it (1st, 2nd, etc; not 1, 2).
18. Read a book where either the main character or the authors first name and last name both have consecutive double letters in them. e.g Danielle Steel,Suzanne Collins, Harry Potter, Huckleberry Finn.
19. Read a book with a sense of direction in the title. So words like Up, Down, Left, Right, Straight, Turn etc. If you are not sure just message me.
20. Read a book that has a word in the title that indicates a collection of written words/records. Example: grimoire, lexicon, handbook, scroll, letter, tablet and of course book.
21. Read a book that has a predominantly blue cover.
