I'm currently enjoying Death in a White Tie by Ngaio Marsh, an Inspector Alleyn mystery. I'm slowly working through this series, but Marsh was a prolific writer. The more books in the series I read, the more I enjoy it. I don't know which I prefer, Christie, Sayers or Marsh, but they are all excellent examples of the classics. I'm also almost finished Original Sin by P.D. James, an Inspector Dalgleish mystery. I was kind of intimidated by the size, but it doesn't really matter. So well written and organized and thoughtful, it's been a pleasure to read. I'll have to read more in this series.

I went back to the error post and edited the failed link, just for good measure
I just finished Trunk Music and ready to begin discussing it in the Crime, Thriller, Mystery Thread.
Portia, I have Frog Music on my hold list at the library for my kindle. I haven't had time to read it yet but if you do read it let me know what you think about it.
Scott, After I read Gone Girl I couldn't read "Sharp Objects" and "Dark Places" fast enough. I liked both of them but I really liked one of them way more than the other. I can't remember which one I liked the most right now though. I can't wait to see the movie Gone Girl though. Ben Affleck is going to be in it.
Wendy wrote: "Scott, After I read Gone Girl I couldn't read "Sharp Objects" and "Dark Places" fast enough. I liked both of them but I really liked one of them way more than the other. Portia wrote: "Has anyone in the group read Frog Music? It's sort of a murder mystery. I read it a few months ago."
I read it ... personally speaking, I didn't find it all that great crime wise but loved the historical setting.

You and me both Skye..Im not sure about my hubby thou..lol!But he says he will.Hopefully it will be good!
Thanks for letting me know; she is very attractive and both resemble how I imagined they would look when I was reading the book.
Wendy and Aiesha...I waited awhile after Gone Girl to read Dark Places. I tore through Dark Places and liked it better than Gone Girl. Then a co- worker gave me Sharp Objects...so far it's good but Dark Places is the winner so far.
Just finished The Death Of Dalziel by Reginald Hillon audio (greatly enjoyed it - excellent storyline and narrator)and just started Dying To Tell by Robert Goddardalso on audio.
Scott wrote: "Wendy and Aiesha...I waited awhile after Gone Girl to read Dark Places. I tore through Dark Places and liked it better than Gone Girl. Then a co- worker gave me Sharp Objects...so far it's good b..."Scott; this is good to know; I have all three novels, and I did like Gone Girl
Just finished The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher : Or the Murder at Road Hill House, I liked it. Was very well written and researched. I can't believe that a man as gifted as Whicher was treated in the way that he was. Can't decide what to read next, I either need to finish Gone Girl or The Fall.

I absolutely loved The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective. There's also a movie of the same title, if you're interested.
I'm curious as to why the two different titles! Mine is the second.

Just finished Shut Your Eyes Tight by John Verdon. He constructs pretty good puzzles but isn't a great storyteller.Per some of the comments from the group, I'm going to try Mystic River next. Haven't read anything by Lehane yet.
Nancy wrote: "Charlotte (Buried in Books) wrote: "Just finished The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher : Or the Murder at Road Hill House, I liked it. Was very well written and researched. I can't believ..."There are several different published versions, which seem to have different subtitles. It's very confusing.
I have recorded the TV film (was recently repeated here in the UK and I missed it the first time around), but I wanted to read the book first. I think Paddy Considine is an excellent actor. Loved him in Hot Fuzz.
You're NextAnother new author for me, and a author I will read more, as I enjoyed this book, although a tiny let down with the last part of the book.
Thrillers don't get much more tense than when a child's welfare is threatened and in Gregg Hurwitz's You're Next there are two. One is the daughter of Mike Wingate, a property developer who has made a few mistakes in his life, but nothing so serious that his eight year-old daughter Kat should be threatened by two particularly nasty individuals. What is even more worrying to Mike is that the police seem more interested in him than in going after the criminals. The other child whose life has been jeopardised is Mike himself, the novel flashing back to show the strange circumstances in which he was abandoned as a child and left to fend for himself in a care home. There are a lot of gaps in Mike's past and it looks like someone is trying to fill them in for him. And not in a friendly way either, with some very nasty villains.
However in the last quarter of the book we discover why they are after him and I felt that it dipped from here on in. The reason, for me was unbelievable but it ends up satisfyingly enough. When I was in the middle of this book, I would have awarded it the full five star rating but by the end I decided on 4 stars as it was very enjoyable, gripping reading.
Very much in the same vain of writing as Linwood Barclay and Harlan Coben
I finished Bellweather Rhapsody by Kate Racculia. The Bellweather Hotel in New York hosts a yearly event called "Statewide" where talented music students show off their skills. In 1997, Rabbit and Alice Hatmaker, twin high school seniors, attend. This year the head of Statewide is Viola Fabian, a cruel woman who likes to crush young talent and use people. Coincidentally, Viola's daughter - flute prodigy Jill Facelli - is Alice's roommate in Room 712. Alice discovers Jill's hanging body in their hotel room. When Alice rushes out to get help Jill's body disappears. This incident is reminiscent of an occurrence 15 years before when a newlywed bride shot her husband and hanged herself in Room 712. The crux of the story revolves around what happened to Jill. Viola insists that Jill faked the incident but Alice fears that Jill is dead and investigates.
There are plenty of intriguing characters and interesting situations in the story. There's a major snowstorm, lovely music, romance, psychotic behavior, bad food, drunk teens, amateur detective work, and so on. This is a face-paced, entertaining mystery that's a little off the beaten track for this genre. I enjoyed it and recommend it.
Jannene wrote: "I just finished Roses are Red. There was a cliffhanger now I have to hurry and read the next one."That was a good book. I really like his books.
