I wasn't a big fan of Gone Girl after I read it. Not my kind of story...I hated just about every character :)

Jannene | 775 comments I just started Where All the Dead Lie (Taylor Jackson, #7) by J.T. Ellison today. It is very intriguing and confusing at the same time. I'm already about 65% through it. I'll be sad when I finish this series. I plan to finish a few of my series this year.

message 2207: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10060 comments I finished The Burnt House by Faye Kellerman. A WestAir commuter plane crashes into a building near Los Angeles. Ivan Dresden claims his flight attendant wife Roseanne died in the crash but her parents think Ivan killed her. LAPD detective Peter Decker and his team investigate. Roseanne's body is not located in the wreckage but a different female body - buried for decades - is found in the ruins. Thus there are two potential homicides: Roseanne and the female body. Some pretty huge coincidences crop up in the dual investigations which may be hard to swallow. As usual in this series there are nice family scenes where Decker is at home with his wife Rina, having delicious meals, visiting with their kids, celebrating the Jewish Sabbath, and so on. The story is a bit convoluted and scenes where the suspects are interviewed tend to drag on. The characters are well drawn though and the story comes to a satisfactory conclusion.

message 2208: by Brandon (new)

Brandon I just finished Doctor Sleep on CD last night, and I'll finish In The Woods sometime this week. I rather like Tana French. A while back I read Faithful Place. French has a great grasp on interpersonal relationships in her writing, a place where King has started to go only recently.

Have you tried Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe: A Centennial Celebration? Some of today's best mystery writers take a hand at Mr. Marlowe. Obviously some are better than others.

Read an excellent essay in Books to Die For by Michael Connelly on how/why Chandler changed his life with The Little Sister. He refers especially to the four pages that make up Chapter 13. It is a book made up of mystery authors telling what book or character they most liked or effected them. So far, not a dud in the book to me.

Rick Soper (RickSoper) | 96 comments I just finished:

The Abomination Assignment (Bowin, #1) by Lee Holz
8/41 -The Abomination Assignment by Lee Holz which was an exploration of government sanctioned assassination which I found very interesting

I also Finished:

The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers
9/41 -The King in Yellow by Robert W Chambers I read this because I heard that HBO's True Detective used it as a source, which is true, but there was more than this book in the show. The first 5 short stories in The King in Yellow are pretty good and I can see how HP Lovecraft used them as a basis for his works. But the last five short stories are not that great.

I'm currently reading:

The Best of Joe R. Lansdale by Joe R. Lansdale
10/41 - The best of Joe R Lansdale which was recommended to my in my For The Love of Horror group and started with a Godzilla story that just great and is continuing with Bubba Ho-Tep, which for the un-initiated was made into a movie with the great Bruce Campbell, which I enjoyed. So i'm looking forward to the rest of the book.

Next up:

The Complete Works of H.P. Lovecraft 102 Horror Short Stories, Novels, Juvenelia, Collaborations and Ghost Writings by H.P. Lovecraft
11/41 - The Complete Works of HP Lovecraft it's been awhile since I've read HP Lovecraft and look forward to getting back into his stories as I start write my own set of horror shorts for my next book. Time to get inspired.

Thnaks for that. I've see a few other "reading" lists that have many of the same books. I could see some of the influence of the King in Yellow, but like that article says it's mostly in the descriptions of "Corcosa", rather than the actual short stories. The series definitely borrows from a whole lot that came before, but then in the end brings it back and made something special that people are going to be talking about for quite a while.

message 2244: by Sean (new)

Sean Peters (A Good Thriller) | 155 comments The Innocent and The Hit with Will Robie are both great.

The Innocent is the first of the Will Robie books, and David Baldacci has created a great strong character.

This is a gripping, tense, fast paced, action packed thriller, keeping you on your toes all the way.

I started to become suspicious of one character, and right to be.

David Baldacci brought a new hero matching Jack Reacher, and Will Robie will return later on the year for The Target.

I also do enjoy the youg fiesty charcater Julie Getty and FRB Agent Vance.

Highly recommended, as is The Hit.

What I find difficult is I read a author, like David Baldacci, love his books then want to read all of them, but then given so many other recommendations, then I love to read all of another author.

Oh why do I have to work for eight hours a day and fit so many other things into my day.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10060 comments I finished Blind Goddess by Anne Holt. A young Dutchman is accused of killing a drug dealer in Oslo, Norway. Soon afterwards a disreputable lawyer, Hansa Larsen, is shot to death. Police officers Håkon Sand and Hanne Wilhelmsen connect the murders and find clues in the attorney's house that lead them to suspect a huge drug-dealing conspiracy that involves lawyers and maybe even government officials. The police follow complex clues to unearth the culprits but have a hard time trying to bring them to justice. There's a lot of blather about the Norwegian court/justice system which slows down the story and the climax is very drawn out as well. I thought it was just an okay mystery/thriller.
