Gone Girl -- don ' t bother with this book. There was not one character to like , plot can be figured out by reading book jacket. Book is waste of paper and time. Terrible ending too

Morning all, now on to Book 3 Crave - Marina Anderson.

I understand they are not everyone's cup of tea, but these are really good mini series kinda books lol. Shame I only have 5 to review, but will definitely be thinking about the other 3 to finish the series lol.

My husband also reads these and he got quite a kick out of it. He loves Stephanie's grandmother.

I ended up giving this book 4 stars but I couldn't get into it until halfway through. I agree about the characters except that I did really like Go. I found her unique and bold.

I just finished Demolition Angel by Robert Crais. What a great book. Carol Starkey is a former member of a bomb squad in which she was almost killed. Now, 3 years later, she is investigating a bombing that killed another member of the squad. I think most any mystery reader would like this. On a side note, there is another female detective (Marzik) who made me think of Deb on Dexter. She has the same filthy mouth and that's the only other person I could think of like her.

The Case of the Locked Apartment by Larry Winebrenner is the second book in the Etta Derringer series. Etta is a lively 92-year-old wheelchair-bound amateur detective who investigates crime using the false identity "Henri Derringer." Etta and her husband Randy live in Epworth Village Retirement Community in Florida, enjoying good friends and delicious meals. Life is quiet in the village until Gwen Mountainshine, a wealthy resident, is found dead in her apartment. The police conclude the death was 'suicide by sword'. Soon afterward another resident of Epworth Village, Frankie Charlot, is also found dead, allegedly by natural causes.
Etta finds the deaths suspicious, though, and decides to investigate with the help of her friends, relatives, and super sophisticated hi-tech computer called 'Mephistopheles'. Etta and Mephistopholes are a humorous pair: Etta consistently gets frustrated with the computer, calls it names, and argues with it...not that helpful when dealing with a computer. Etta's investigation of the Epworth Village deaths frightens someone and attempts are made on Etta's life. Etta soldiers on with her amateur detecting, however, and unearths the culprit in a surprise ending. Etta, Randy, and their friends and relatives comprise a warm-hearted, amusing group - worth dropping in on.

I really enjoyed "Still Life with Crows", not as much as "Cabinet Of Curiosities", but I can't remember there being any bad books in the Pendergast series. Even the individual books by Preston and Child have been pretty good, like RipTide, Impact, or The Third Gate.

I finished The Prophet by Michael Koryta. In this book Adam and Kent Austin are estranged brothers, both still reeling from the murder of their sister years ago. Adam feels especially guilty because on the night of his sister's murder he blew off driving her home to be with his girl. Adam is now a bail bondsman and Kent is coach of the high school football team. The football team is on track to a state championship when the girlfriend of a star player is murdered. Adam feels compelled to investigate the crime and finds disturbing connections to himself and his brother. This is a well-written suspense thriller that draws you in and keeps you turning the pages.

I'm in the middle of reading Delia's Shadow, a historical mystery with some supernatural thrown in along with a dash of romance. I'm enjoying it a lot and glad it seems there will be more to come. It's very atmospheric so appropriate for October.

I just finished Killer Dreams. That was another great book by Iris Johansen. I enjoy this Eve Duncan series. I also finished Blood Work by Michael Connelly. I didn't enjoy this book much. I liked the movie better. The story line seemed to drag on in the book. I think I would feel the same way had I read the book first then watched the movie. The story line was better in the movie.

Detective fiction is a little like drinking wine: there is a lot around and everyone has their favourite. When something new comes on the market, the drinker or the reader, looks longingly to their favourite brand or book and says, "I hope the new one is like the old one..." It's not an exact science of course: there is a chemistry to it. The reader can like a new detective story, and then the reader can love a new detective story.

I am a fan of detective stories. I began with Agatha Christie back when I was eleven. I read Sherlock Holmes and moved onto the feminist detectives in the early eighties. It's a little hard to define what I like: sometimes I think that reading anything is really a love story and so is undefinable, but....

I picked up American Crow by Jack Lacey and was hooked. I love American Crow. The character of Sibelius Blake is strongly written and interesting. Blake’s back story comes out through the novel. The plot ending ties beautifully with the beginning: it is very well structured.

The last 4 books I have read were the First two books in Nikki Heat series by Richard Castle, the Bone Collector by Jeffrey Deaver, The Final Cut by Catherine Coulter. My next book to start will be The Cut by George Pelacanos.

Reading James Ellroy's American Tabloid. I'm in chapter three or so and frankly, not impressed. I've liked LA confidential and even Black Dahlia but this is so far a choppy mess with dialog like everyone is sneering out the side of their mouth. Even the historical characters seem like parodies and aren't believable. Reads like Sin City but tied to an actual but distorted chronology.

Ellroy has probably been told so many times he is a literary genius, he's started to believe he can do whatever he wants. I call this Cormac McCarthy syndrome.

I just finished Vanishing Trail: The Taking of Jonathan Bishop. The story is simple but compelling. In reading this, I broke one of my rules, I don`t read books about lawyers. As a lawyer myself, I try an avoid reading about things I deal with on a daily basis. In this case, our shared realities made me sympathize with him. 3.5 stars. While not perfect, a very good story by a first time author. It is a new release. Check it out.

I finished The Whole Enchilada by Diane Mott Davidson, a Goldy Schulz (the caterer) mystery. In this book Goldy is catering a Mexican food birthday party for a teen after which the teen's mother - a close friend of Goldy's - suddenly collapses and dies. Goldy feels compelled to investigate and as usual thrusts herself into the investigation. I don't want to give away essential plot points but the story involves too many disparate elements: bad parents, misuse of trust funds, art shenanigans, unfaithfulness (and more) to ever mesh together in a satisfactory way. Goldy also bullies witnesses and leaps to conclusions from the tiniest hint of "evidence". I liked this series for a long time but for me Goldy is losing her mojo. I may give up on this series.

In the wee hours last night, I finished Port Mortuary by Patricia Cornwell.

My sister dropped off her copy of The Cuckoo's Calling a couple of days ago. I mentioned at Sunday dinner last week that I'm something like 87th in line on the library waiting list for it. She casually says, "Oh, I bought it weeks ago. Did you want to borrow it?" I believe my facial expression said something along the lines of "duh".

Barbara I just finished this book too and I have to agree. The ending was very rushed. I used to admire Goldie but in this book, she doesn't seem to able to settle on any one thing. What made it such a favourite was the descriptions of her relationship to Tom, Arch, Marla etc and the descriptions of her catering and I find that lacking in this book.

Renee how do you find Cornwell's latter books? i stopped reading her about two or three books ago, I found they was too much psycho analyzing of relationships and not enough detective work or action and I positively despised the character of her niece,(sorry the name escapes me) for her bullying, throwing her money around and her basic cruelty

I am starting the Alex Kava Maggie O'Dells series. I enjoyed the first one, didn't have the second one and am starting the third. I wonder what happened to Nick her almost "love" in the first one? Guess I need to read book two to find out?

I finished The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (the pen name for J.K. Rowling). It's a mystery that revolves around the death of gorgeous model Lula Landry, who falls from her balcony in an apparent suicide. Her brother, John Bristow, insists Lula was murdered and hires down-on-his-luck detective Cormoran Strike(who lost a leg in the Afghanistan war) to investigate. Plenty of interesting characters and a good intricate plot lead to a satisfactory conclusion. Good first mystery for Robert Galbraith.

You need to read the second one. He pops in on all of the books except Damaged. I haven't read Fireproof but that sounds like a good read too. I liked Nick and hope he makes another reappearance.
